The rubric for the workshop included four key points: the first of which began with the words “Revisit questions about U.S. media imperialism”; and the second of which read: “Question the continued valorisation of the transnational, triumphalist, expansionist, liberationist dimensions of American media in the context of democratic movements in Asia”. In the resulting volume, however, the first word of the workshop title has vanished. Empire is no more. The organizers appear to have discovered what seemed obvious to some from the start: the main obstacles preventing Asian media from functioning as consistent agents of progressive political change lie not in U.S.-inspired geo-political imperialist designs, but in local specificities and obdurate regional regimes. American media is at best a very marginal player in Asian politi...

Infective larvae ofS. lupiwere collected in Madras from scarabaeid beetles, (the usual intermediate host), from garden lizards and shrews.2. The structure and relative sizes of the larvae in the 3 kinds of hosts are compared.3. Infective larvae were given orally to 30 dogs which were autopsied at intervals and the developing worms were recovered. Their growth was measured and some observations were made on their development during the prepatent period which was found to be 121 and 124 days.

A nonrandomised trial was conducted to find out the proportion of rheumatoid arthritis patients suffering from dyslipidaemia and change in lipid levels after an intervention with antirheumatic drugs in a tertiary care centre in Eastern India from April 2006 to July 2008. The trial was done on 161 diagnosed patients of rheumatoid arthritis (fulfilling the American College of Rheumatology criteria) on lipid levels. Lipids estimations were done enzymatically by semi-autoanalyser and dyslipidaemia was defined by taking the cut-off value of National Cholesterol Education Programme-Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) guidelines. Patients with other comorbid illness and on statins were excluded. Disease activity score 28 (DAS-28) was also employed for evaluating disease activity. Patients were followed up to 10 -12 weeks for repeat lipid level estimation. Using the high cut-off values of NCEP-ATP II...

There is evidence too that, after years of decline, student interest in Indonesian language and studying in Indonesia is on the rise. International comparisons suggest that popular culture and language learning may be connected. Bollywood cinema has spread Hindi through India more successfully than the shambolic national language policy. Some argued that the growth of interest in Japanese in the 1980s was fuelled by the global rise of manga comics. More recently, Korean pop music and video games have driven interest in Korean language in Australia.

But high lipoprotein(a) is not so much common and though associated with atherogenesis, no positive correlation is established till now between these. Case report: A patient presented with sudden onset of left sided hemiplegia without any recognized risk factor of atherosclerosis but a past history of miscarriage attended the Emergency in a tertiary care hospital. Her blood parameter shows Homocysteine level 19.51µmol/L and lipoprotein(a) level 580 mg/L. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed infraction in the right basal ganglion which was confirmed by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) later on. Conclusion: It is a unique type of case report as Hyperlipoproteinemia(a) is not a recognized cause of cerebrovascular accident (CVA). More study require to establish the correlation between hyperlipoproteinemia(a) & hyperhomocysteinemia and cerebrovascular accident.

We report an autosomal recessive form of the disease in a neonate who was diagnosed with compound heterozygosity for mutations in his protein C gene as the molecular basis of his disorder.

As macrovascular disease is the commonest cause of increased mortality in dysglycaemic individuals (prediabetes and diabetes) by 2-4 times as opposed to normal individuals, clinicians do encounter patients with cardiovascular disease of varying severity regularly. There are increased constellation of other cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, dyslipidaemia, etc), in prediabetes as compared to normal population. Here a study was carried out among 62 acute coronary syndrome patients who were admitted in a tertiary care hospital in Kolkata to find out the proportion of prediabetes in them. Majority of the patients (54.8%) were in the age group of 45-64 years and were males (77.4%). The study showed 48.4% of all acute coronary syndrome patients were prediabetic and 25% were diabetic. The proportion of impaired fasting g...

Routine examination was suggestive of haemolytic jaundice. High pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) electrophoresis of the patient's blood showed haemoglobin (Hb) SD disease. As it is a double heterozygous disease, family screening was done. It showed that the father was sickle cell trait. Mother was Hb D trait. Both the brothers were sickle cell trait and the only sister was normal. Hb SD disease is a very rare variety of haemoglobinopathy and the case is presented here due to its rarity.
