The present article dwells upon an unpublished essay about the Ottoman province of Herzegovina in... more The present article dwells upon an unpublished essay about the Ottoman province of Herzegovina in the 19th century. The author of this text is a Russian consul in Mostar Alexei N. Kudryavtsev. The essay was written in 1867 and probably should have been included into the book “The Turkish Empire”. There are several evidences about the existence of this book, however it has not been found yet. Kudryavtsev’s essay embraces a wide range of problems of Herzegovina in the 19th century. It deals with the geography, ethnography and statistics, history of the region, as well as provides a general overview of trade, industry and communication routes in Herzegovina in 1866. The text is stored in the Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire and is being published for the first time. Kudryavtsev’s essay tells us about the situation in Herzegovina and its problems. Acting prudently and in cool blood, in 1833 he achieved the separation of Herzegovina from Bosnia and the establishment of his sole power in it. Ali Pasha intended to expand the autonomy of the region and pass it on to his children. He managed to maintain the status of a semi-independent ruler of Herzegovina until 1851.

Based on the previously unpublished archival materials, the essay reconstructs history of the sta... more Based on the previously unpublished archival materials, the essay reconstructs history of the stay of the Russian diplomat Alexander S. Ionin (1837–1900) in the Ottoman provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1857, for the first time in history, the Russian consulate was opened in the principal city of the Bosnian Pashalyk. A. Ionin was assigned to Sarajevo as a secretary and dragoman in this consulate. Here he worked under the leadership of A. Hilferding, and then E. Shchulepnikov until 1860. Ionin witnessed the uprisings in Herzegovina, worked hard on the problem of opening a Russian consulate in Mostar, and for some time unofficially served as a consul in Sarajevo. This was the first diplomatic experience of a man who eventually spent about 30 years of his life in the Balkans and was an active participant in many significant events in the history of the region.

She was the author of the essay The Annals of Bosnia . In 1858 Skenderova opened a school for girls in Sarayevo, where representatives of all faiths were admitted. This school received assistance from Russia, Serbia and from the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Aziz.

He is known for his literary work and charitable activities. On a number of occasions he several times acted as a negotiator during the unrest in the region, and from 1860 to 1864 unofficially served as the Metropolitan of Herzegovina.

The period of the 1860s became the time of experiments in the fi eld of armed force creation in Bo... more The period of the 1860s became the time of experiments in the fi eld of armed force creation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, for instance, there were formed bashi-bazouks units made up of the local Muslims. There were also projects aimed at increasing the number of Islamic combatants through transfer of the Circassians from the Caucuses to Bosnia. Attempts to organise border guard detachments made up of Bosnian Christians were made too. The article deals with the implementation of these projects and is based on Russian diplomatic reports.

Herzegovina and Bosnia in 1867» with original captions by Pyatnitsky.
