The results have often tended to reinforce the structure of dependency in the Southern Sudan. Further, the growing civil war appears to be forcibly bringing to a close, aid activity in this region of the Sudan,

In John Gledhill’s letter inviting my reaction to Esteban Krotz’s article, ’Anthropologies of the... more In John Gledhill’s letter inviting my reaction to Esteban Krotz’s article, ’Anthropologies of the South: Their Rise, Their Silencing, Their Characteristics’ (1997), he makes the remark that Knotz’s article ‘raises more issues than it is willing to answer’; furthermore he observes that, ’the author has chosen to avoid any attempt to address the question of any specific regional or national perspectives on what anthropologies of the South distinguishable from Northern anthropologies might/should constitute’. These observations are salient and underscore the fact, that, while many will find Krotz’s article an uncanny perception of the state of the art and craft of anthro-

Indeed, as I have elsewhere argued, the notion of the right of peoples to self-determination has possibly been the single most potent force in the struggles of mankind this century for economic and political equity in international relations.1
