Dentists were considered essential personnel and their activity was restricted to emergency treatment. The present observational study aims to determine the situation of oral implantology practice in Spain during the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a cross-sectional observational study based on the STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) guidelines. An electronic survey consisting of three blocks of questions was sent to all members of the Spanish Society of Implants. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. A total of 237 participants (14.3%) responded to the questionnaire. The majority of participants (60.8%) only attended emergencies during the first 9 months of the pandemic. Despite this, 77.2% reported having performed dental implant surgeries and 75.5% indicated that they performed non-essential treatments....

Blood pressure and cardiac frequency are used often as an indirect measurement and this parameters combined can serve as good indicators of stress. Objective: Analyze the changes in vital signs and analytical parameters induced by a dental extraction. 24 healthy patients who required a simple dental extraction underwent to a blood test and motorization of their pre- and post-extraction vital signs before, at 2 and 48 hours after the procedure. Data analysis was performed by means of repeated measures one way ANOVA followed by multiple comparisons Bonferroni's Post-hoc test. The evaluated patients were 13 women and 11 men with an average age of 35.1. Thirteen patients (54.17% of the sample) were smokers and five were regular drinkers (20.8%). No s...

Despite extensive evidence on the effects of smoking on both oral and general health, the rate of smoking cessation is not promising. Material and Methods: To review the evidence on knowledge and programs for smoking cessation developed by dentists, a literature review was carried out on programs for smoking cessation from the dentist's perspective, as well as a review of behavioral guidelines that have been recently proposed for these interventions. We used the keywords "Tobacco", "Smoking Prevention", "Public Health" AND "Dentistry", to identify controlled studies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses published between 1999 and 2014, in Google Scholar, SCOPUS and PubMed. Results: Out of 177 studies found, 35 were considered, and these were divided into 2 groups of 20 and 15 articles respectively, according to type of study and inclusion criteria. Conclusions: There is considerable scientific evidence describing the programs for smoking cessation used in dentistry, which support their effectiveness. Overall, these are brief behavioral interventions complemented by pharmacological treatment, with the participation of the entire dental team.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) and peripheral giant-cell granuloma (PGCG) are two of the most common inflammatory lesions associated with implants; however, there is no established pathway for treatment of these conditions. This paper aims to illustrate the successful treatment of PG and PGCG and also report a systematic review of the literature regarding the various treatments proposed.Methods. To collect relevant information about previous treatments for PG and PGCG involving implants we carried out electronic searches of publications with the key words “granuloma”, “oral”, and “implants” from the last 15 years on the databases Pubmed, National Library of Medicine’s Medline, Scielo, Scopus, and Cochrane Library.Results. From the electronic search 16 case reports were found showing excision and curettage as the main successful treatment. As no clinical trials or observational studies were identified the authors agreed to present results from a review perspective.Conclusion. ...

O ral implant therapy has become a widely accepted dental treatment for the replacement of missin... more O ral implant therapy has become a widely accepted dental treatment for the replacement of missing teeth with high success rates and high predictability. 1,2 Dental implant placement requires bone preparation and sometimes flap retraction and bone grafts as well. This procedure sometimes results in some levels of pain after implant surgery 3-6 after the effect of anesthesia ceases. 7,8 Despite being one of the most frequent manifestations after dental implant placement, acute postsurgical pain is often not adequately appreciated by clinicians, as they are often more concerned with technical aspects of surgery and long-term outcomes than with patient-centered matters of treatment. 9 Oral surgery is rarely life threatening and has a relatively short recovery duration; however, fear of pain associated with oral surgery is known to be a deterrent for seeking dental treatment. 10,11 Although pain due to dental implant placement is mostly described as mild to moderate and short-term in nature, 4 this surgical procedure is so common that the morbidity of pain might be noticeable. In epidemiology, a risk factor is a behavioral, environmental, inborn, or inherited factor associated with a health-related condition whose prevention is crucial (accessible at: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ mesh/68012307). Not all factors affecting pain are intrinsic to the surgical procedure itself and are determined by both nociceptive stimulus and psychologic status. 12 Previous studies on pain and factors that might influence pain perception have suggested that acute postsurgical pain after dental implant placement might be

This relatively rare disease develops mainly in men (mean age, 60 years). The occurrence of the disease in jaws is uncommon as a primary manifestation. A 73-yearold man was first seen with a chief complaint of a painful mandibular enlargement persisting for 1 month with an increase in the volume of the gingiva, which bled during oral hygiene. The Xray revealed a 'punched-out' lesion with ill-defined margins in the mandibular ramus and body. A computed tomography scan showed a mandibular osteolytic lesion extending to the surrounding soft tissue. The incisional biopsy revealed a monotonous proliferation of plasmacytoid cells strongly immunoreactive to Kappa IgG, which confirmed the diagnosis of MM. After the biopsy, the patient spontaneously fractured his ribs, and the Bence Jones protein test was positive. Conformal radiotherapy followed by bortezomib with melphalan and prednisone was the elected treatment. The patient stopped treatment after two cycles, and progression to death followed after 6 months. This case report reinforces the data on the importance of early diagnosis of MM in the jaw and illustrates the contribution that oral assessment can provide for the diagnosis of this disease.

These techniques include bone distraction, ridge expansion, bone block grafts, etc. Guided bone regeneration is an alternative to increase the volume of the hard tissues for the subsequent placement of the implants in the optimal three-dimensional position. The objective of this paper is to show a case report of the use of customized titanium mesh for posterior vertical bone regeneration. Case report and Results: A 59-year-old woman comes to rehabilitate edentulous spaces with implants. After taking the anamnesis and the intra and extraoral exploration, a vertical and horizontal bone defect is observed in the third quadrant. After the radiological study with CBCT, a bone height of 6.04 mm to the inferior alveolar nerve and a width of the bone crest of 3.95 mm was observed. It was decided to carry out a regeneration with a preformed titanium m...

Morse taper abutments were torqued to corresponding implants and then the implant-abutment assemblies were immersed in a biofilm medium for 72 hours. After detorque evaluation, the abutments were removed and the inner implant surfaces were observed via scanning electron microscopy and profilometry. The removal torque values and the implant damaged areas decreased after contact with biofilms. The lubricating effect of biofilms decreased the friction between contacting surfaces, negatively affecting the mechanical integrity of the implant-abutment connection.
