The basic building blocks of the filter are based on MOS translinear loops and dynamic level shifter techniques, allowing low voltage operation and an extended dynamic range. However the dynamic level shifters introduce positive feedback inducing three operating points to the filter through a negative differential resistance. A detailed analysis of such performance employing a bi-port analysis is offered. Simulation and measurement results are provided in order to demonstrate the analysis and circuits proposed. Research paper thumbnail of Ventromedial hypothalamus vs. lateral hypothalamic D2 satiety receptors in the body weight increase induced by systemic sulpiride

Physiology & Behavior, 1991

In the first experiment, it was shown that systemic sulpiride (20 mg/kg) does not block the anorexia caused by intraperifornical injections of amphetamine. In the second experiment, sulpiride (20 mg/kg during 18 days) did not produce an additional increase in body weight in previously VMH-lesioned female rats. This last fact cannot be explained by a ceiling effect since insulin (5 U/day during 7 days) increased body weight in the same VMH rats in which sulpiride was not effective. These results do not support the hypothesis that systemic sulpiride reaches the perifornical dopamine D2 receptors to disinhibit feeding, but suggest instead an involvement of the ventromedial hypothalamus. This last suggestion is more in agreement with the hypothesis that sulpiride alters feeding and body weight gain through the induction of a functional gonadectomy.

This report summarizes the adaptation of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy (FACT) Scales for use with Spanish-speaking cancer patients, including those with low literacy. The Spanish language version of the general Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy scale plus five disease-specific subscales (breast, lung, colorectal, head and neck, HIV infection) were translated, reviewed, and revised, then evaluated in interviews with Spanish-speaking patients from the mainland United States and Puerto Rico. An iterative forward-backward-forward sequence of item translation, expert bilingual/bicultural advisor review, pretesting interviews with 92 patients, and further expert advisory input were used to establish semantic, content, and partial technical equivalence. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General and five disease-specific subscales were translated successfully into wording that was easily understood and answered, leading to psychometric and scoring data similar to that of the English version. All but one of the 28 Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General items and all of the disease-specific items were seen as culturally relevant. The result is a document that underwent iterative forward-backward translation and evaluation and was pretested successfully with native Spanish-speaking oncology patients living in the Central United States and Puerto Rico. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General and five disease-specific subscales have been translated successfully into Spanish using a thorough translation and initial validation methodology. The methods and data provide a model for preparing a health status questionnaire for cross-cultural validation. The questionnaire is available for use in clinical trials and clinical practice.

Among the advantages that it presents is that it avoids A/D conversion of the signal provided by the image sensor and posterior complex digital signal processing. The main idea is to use analog circuits to directly detect the pixel with maximum light intensity. Synchronization signals

Although considered a primary gastrointestinal disease, CD is now known to have widespread systemic manifestations. We attempted to define the nature and role of systemic cytokine levels in the pathophysiology of CD. Multiplex cytokine assays were performed on four different groups of adult patients; patients with active CD (ACD), patients on a gluten-free diet (GFD) with positive TTG IgA antibodies, patients on a GFD with negative antibodies, and those with refractory CD (RCD). The results were compared with values in healthy adult controls. Patients with active CD and those on GFD with positive antibodies had significantly higher levels of proinflammatory cytokines, such as interferon-␥, interleukin (IL)-1␤, tumor necrosis factor-␣, IL-6 and IL-8, and also T h -2 cytokines such as IL-4 and IL-10, compared with normal controls and patients on GFD without antibodies. Interestingly patients on GFD for less than 1 year had significantly higher levels of both proinflammatory cytokines and T h 2 cytokines compared with the patients on GFD for more than 1 year. In addition, a statistically significant correlation between levels of TTG IgA titers and serum levels of T h -2 cytokines IL-4 (p Ͻ 0.001), IL-10 (p Ͻ 0.001) and inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1␣ (p Ͻ 0.001), IL-1␤ (p Ͻ 0.005), and IL-8 (p Ͻ 0.05) was observed. ᭧

Research paper thumbnail of Treatment for the menopause in Central America: use, knowledge, perceptions and attitudes among urban living middle-aged women

To gain information regarding the treatment of the menopause (HT/alternative): use, knowledge, perceptions and attitudes among middle-aged Central American women. A total of 720 urban living women (35-65 years) from six Central American countries (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama) were surveyed with a structured questionnaire that included socio-demographic data and information regarding the menopause and its treatment. Participating countries displayed significant socio-demographic differences. Forty-one percent of all women were postmenopausal and 5.8% had no education at all. Knowledge regarding menopausal treatment options varied; while 27.2% (196/720) indicated HT as an option a higher rate (36.3%) either did not respond or answered not knowing anything. HT use for the whole sample was rather low 2.7% with differences seen among countries. 13.8% (27/196) indicated to have been on HT but abandoned treatment because of medical indication (51.9%), undesired side effects (29.6%) and costs (11.1%). While more than 50% considered HT served to replace hormones a smaller percentage (<14%) referred HT as bad for health, reduces cancer risk or has many side effects. 9.3% (67/720) acknowledged the existence of phytoestrogens as a menopausal treatment option, considering them as natural estrogens and good for health in 38.8% and 25.4%, respectively. HT use in this mid-aged series was rather low in which the demography of Central America may be related factors. Education to women and physicians should be encouraged.
