Although human errors when reporting switch positions are rare, they can have a large impact when they occur, making automatic monitoring an attractive proposition, especially in substations without permanent staff. In this paper, we describe a non-intrusive computer vision system for monitoring the state of disconnect switches in distribution substations. The system employs regular surveillance cameras, which can also be used for other purposes, leading to lower cost and simpler installation and maintenance compared to individual per-switch sensors. Several challenges were addressed: cluttered backgrounds, occlusions, variations in lighting, weather and switch aspect, and the fact that it is often not possible to maneuver the switches during installation. We addressed these challenges by combining data provided by a human operator during installation with multiple machine learning models, relying on techniques such as SVMs for classifying SIFT or HOG features, and deep learning. By combining multiple outputs, the system achieved a 99.7365% success rate in experiments performed at a real substation over several days.

This information is usually provided by human operators, who can commit errors because of the cluttered environment, bad weather or lighting conditions, or lack of attention. In this paper, we introduce an approach for determining the state of each switch in a substation, based on images captured by regular pan-tilt-zoom surveillance cameras. The proposed approach includes noise reduction, image registration using phase correlation, and classification using a convolutional neural network and a support vector machine fed with gradient-based descriptors. By combining information given in an initial labeling stage with image processing techniques to reduce variations in viewpoint, our approach achieved 100% accuracy on experiments performed at a real substation over multiple days. We also show how modifications to the standard phase correlation image registration algorithm can make it more robust to lighting variations, and how SIFT (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform) descriptors can be made more robust in scenarios where the relevant objects may be brighter or darker than the background.

The quality of the electric power service, based on the DEC, FEC and TMAE continuity indicators, was analyzed for a critical feeder belonging to the thirteen feeders in the city of Tangará da Serra (MT), which is part of an electric utility in the state of Mato Grosso, in the year 2015. The study is based on records made available by the local distributor and verified in the field through visual inspection by the research team.

The project was completed with field installation of a wireless mesh network fully functional, including end devices and gateways compatibles with the DNP 3.0 and ABNT protocols, covering the power distribution network in the city of Niterói and the street light monitoring and control in the city of Curitiba.

In Brazil, the main agency for the wide(r) SG deployment are the electricity companies that operate under federal or state government concession. This paper presents a framework for sharing the SG communication infrastructure with smart city applications. This sharing would accelerate the development and implementation of new applications, especially in less developed countries or in regions with scarce communication resources. We present preliminary performance results for an existing SG. Our results indicate that, with only the energy metering application, the network operates with a duty cycle of less than 2%. Our work will assess the impact on overall performance of smart city applications sharing the SG.
