Web browsers are becoming the focal point of vehicle customization, forming personalized market places where users can select and preview various setups. However the state of the art for the completion of the transaction is still very much characterized by a face-to-face sales situation. Direct sales over the internet, without sales person contacts, are still a small segment of the market, of only a few percent, for European manufacturers. This paper presents an Intelligent DIY e-commerce system for vehicle design, based on 3D Visualization and Ontologies that aims at enabling a suitable representation of products with the most realistic possible visualization outcome in order to help prospective customers in their decision. The platform, designed for the vehicle sector, includes all the practicable electronic commerce variants and its on-line product configuration process is controlled by an ontology that was created using the OWL Web Ontology Language.

In addition, web browsers are becoming market places. But direct sales over the internet, without contact with a sales person constitute still a small segment of the market, of only a few percent for European manufacturers. Proceedings of the international conference on Multimedia - MM '10, 2010

Content Centric Networking is the new trend in the research community to build network architectures that route content by name and not by the host's network address so as to efficiently deal with content persistence, availability and authenticity issues. In this work we propose an extension to the Content Centric Network protocol in order to support content search as a native process of the network. By using object descriptors to represent the actual content objects and integrate these descriptors in the network protocol we manage to search and retrieve content from the network not only by name but also by the content itself. In this approach, searching for information is a process distributed to the reachable network. Moreover, content aggregation is handled by the end user and not by content aggregation portals, thematic content search engines or information curators. By doing so, search is not any more an application but part of the network and can pave the way for many novel applications which have never been thought until today.

Teleworking, teleconsultation, mutlimedia conferencing and medical data distribution are rapidly becoming commonplace in clinical practice. As a result, a set of problems arises, concerning data confidentiality and integrity. Public computer networks, such as the emerging ISDN technology, are vulnerable to eavesdropping. Therefore it is important for telemedicine applications to employ end-to-end encryption mechanisms securing the data channel from unauthorized access of modification. We propose a network access and encryption system that is both economical and easily implemented for integration in developing or existing applications, using well-known and thoroughly tested encryption algorithms. Public-key cryptography is used for session-key exchange, while symmetric algorithms are used for bulk encryption. Mechanisms for session-key generation and exchange are also provided.

These new tools should enable the user to construct new high-quality content with minimum effort; it is essential to allow existing multimedia content to be reused as building blocks when creating new content. In this work we present a new tool for automatically constructing virtual worlds with minimum user intervention. Users can create these worlds by drawing a simple sketch, or by using interactively segmented 2D objects from larger images. The system receives as a query the sketch or the segmented image, and uses it to find similar 3D models that are stored in a Content Centric Network. The user selects a suitable model from the retrieved models, and the system uses it to automatically construct a virtual 3D world.

ITI-CERTH participated in the high-level feature extraction task and the search task. In the high-level feature extraction task, techniques are developed that combine motion information with existing wellperforming descriptors such as SIFT and Bag-of-Words and the use of compressed video information to form a Bag-of-Words model for shot representation is studied. The search task is based on an interactive retrieval application combining retrieval functionalities in various modalities (i.e. textual, visual and concept search) with a user interface supporting interactive search over all queries submitted. Evaluation results on the submitted runs for this task provide interesting conclusions regarding the comparison of the involved retrieval functionalities as well as the strategies in interactive video search.

The tool can be used both as a sign language dictionary as well as a text to sign language translator. It is based on a Sign Language dictionary written in the well-known Sign- Writing system. More specifically, the entries of the dictionary are in SWML (SignWriting Markup Language), an XML-based format, which has recently been developed for the storage, indexing and processing of SignWriting notation. For sign synthesis, each sign box (basic sign) is first converted to a sequence of Body Animation Pa- rameters (BAPs) of the MPEG-4 standard corresponding to the represented gesture. These sequences, which can also be coded and/or reproduced by MPEG-4 BAP players, are then used to animate H-anim compliant VRML avatars, reproducing the exact gestures represented in sign language notation. The contribution of this paper is the introduction of a hybrid multimedia retrieval model accompanied by the presentation of a search engine that is capable of retrieving visual content from cultural heritage multimedia libraries as in three modes: (i) based on their semantic annotation with the help of an ontology; (ii) based on the visual features with a view to finding similar content; and (iii) based on the combination of these two strategies in order to produce recommendations. To achieve this, the retrieval model is composed of two different parts, a low-level visual feature analysis and retrieval and a high-level ontology infrastructure. The main novelty is the way in which these two co-operate transparently during the evaluation of a single query in a hybrid fashion, making recommendations to the user and retrieving content that is both visually and semantically similar. A search engine has been developed implementing this model which is capable of searching through digital libraries of cultural heritage collections, and indicative examples are discussed, along with insights into its performance.
