Expectations for existing NP faculty to be clinicians, teachers and researchers, as well as the increasing demand for NP graduates have created challenges and opportunities for inventive ways to expand the cadre of available NP teachers. The experiences of a group of Master of Nursing (Advanced Nursing Practice) graduates provide an innovative approach to filling this need. This narrative expository inquiry focuses on the student-to-teacher transition experiences of this group of NP sessional instructors as they transitioned from the student to teacher role in facilitating online NP courses. Their journey evolved into a unique extension of the student role; not only did the participants survive their student days and the transition from registered nurse to nurse practitioner, but they also made the shift to instructor and partnered as novice researchers short...

An added benefit to AU was that out of 120 registered NPs or NP students there were 35 AU grads/students – by far the most representative! Two of the presentations (DNP & Independent practice) were the presentations with the most in attendance for the conference. Thank you for the funding support.

Opportunities for future research collaborations were also made with like-minded researchers. At the Biannual General Meeting I was also fortunate to be elected as president-elect of the Canadian Association of Advance Practice Nurses. This position will help place Athabasca University on the national stage for Advance Practice Nurses.

Addressing ED nursing job satisfaction is a cost-effective way of improving safety and quality of hospital care. Methods: A scoping literature review was conducted to examine the breadth of job satisfaction literature and identify the factors that specifically influence the job satisfaction of ED nurses. Results and discussion: A review of 161 journal articles revealed 34 articles fitting the inclusion criteria, which were included in the final analysis. There were ten predominant factors that allowed for workplace interventions, including six that did not achieve consensus. The ten factors are presented in the form of a practical model for implementation based on the Herzberg two-factor theory and the Maslow hierarchy of needs theory. Conclusion: The model informs healthcare leaders how to pragmatically understand job satisfaction specific to ED nurses. This information in turn can be used to design interventions that increase job satisfaction while maintaining safety and quality of care.

The objectives of the study were to determine the students' perceptions of the content of effective instructor feedback ("what should be included in effective feedback?") and the process of effective instructor feedback ("how should effective feedback be provided?"). The participants were students completing health-related graduate courses offered exclusively online. Data were collected via a survey that included open ended questions inviting participants to share their perspectives regarding effective online instructor feedback. Thematic analysis revealed five major themes: student involvement/individualization, gentle guidance, being positively constructive, timeliness and future orientation. We conclude that effective instructor feedback has positive outcomes for the students. Future studies are warranted to investigate strategies to make feedback a mutual process between instructor and student that supports an effective feedback cycle.

In investigating these gaps, our research has looked at various elements including what social or organizational factors influence the normalization of the practice of using mobile technology in clinical education, and as students' transition to licensed clinician. This descriptive research currently in progress uses qualitative and quantitative methods over a six year period (three within nursing education, three as licensed clinicians) to ascertain the confidence of our participants in information and communication technology, usage information, and their views on factors which promote or inhibit successful normalization of mobile technology at the point of care. Preliminary data based on Normalization Process Theory and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model indicates that mobile technology is being normalized in our students' social realm but hindered in the clinical realm by health care policy and lack of understanding of the affordances available through the technology.

Although Canadian nurse practitioners (NPs) identify similar concerns to their American counterparts, acknowledging potential influences of pharmaceutical marketing practices and some of the ethical issues arising from conflict of interest, challenges faced by NPs in Canada are confounded by the lack of authorization to dispense sample medications. NPs identify this as a barrier to effective practice. Work is needed to address educational deficiencies and to provide reliable information on new drugs that remains evidence based.

The authors used a self-administered Internet-based questionnaire to explore how Canadian NPs perceive their competence in prescribing physical activity and the importance they ascribe to doing so. Participants were asked to identify factors that most commonly prompt physical activity prescription. Overall, the respondents felt fairly competent in their ability to prescribe physical activity (mean score 4.49/6.0, SD = .90) and felt that this function was important (mean score 4.82/6.0, SD = .85). Competence in prescribing physical activity and a perception that this intervention is important were both positively correlated with frequency of prescribing. The most commonly reported barrier to prescribing physical activity was a lack of time. On average, respondents prescribed physical activity to 5...

She takes warfarin (Coumadin) daily, self-monitoring and self-adjusting her dosage on the basis of her physician’s order. She has been very stable on this regimen for the past 3 years, so her nurse practitioner has instructed her to check her international normalized ratio (INR) level every 2 months. Interestingly, Mrs. O’s husband is receiving home healthcare services as he recovers from a fractured hip. As you perform care for Mr. O, his wife informs you that the previous week she started drinking green tea 3 times per day on the advice of her granddaughter, who states it has properties that will help keep her mind sharp.

There are many challenges that are present throughout the course of chronic illnesses. To provide better care to the family caring for an ill child at home, clinicians must understand the experiences family members go through on a daily basis. The purpose of this article is to help clinicians better understand these parental experiences; by increasing clinicians' awareness, strategies can then be used, which will improve the outcome for the child, parents, and siblings.

This diversity requires that the APN bring together self-awareness with literacy about spiritual practices, how religious diversity is respected and accommodated, and how spirituality can serve as a pathway to social inclusion and healing. In Canada, this includes responses to the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission with its calls to address the impacts of colonization and intergenerational trauma on Indigenous communities. A case study is presented to demonstrate how the Availability and Vulnerability framework can be integrated into the Two-Eyed Seeing Framework to provide a lens to understand the importance of spirituality within APN practice.
