Prior research has documented the impact of finn and industry specific variables in shaping the p... more Prior research has documented the impact of finn and industry specific variables in shaping the post-entry exit probability. These studies have found a mixed effect of competition, usually proxied by concentration, upon exit. This paper uses the empirical measure developed by , which captures the theoretical notion of competition in strategic complements versus strategic substitutes. Our results show that the survival of newly established firms is lower when competition is in strategic complements and higher when competition is in strategic substitutes. Furthermore, the evidence suggests predation since the effect of competition depends upon the firm's financial structure and upon the extent of information and incentive problems in financial markets. Myosin-Va is a Ca2+/calmodulin-regulated unconventional myosin involved in the transport of vesic... more Myosin-Va is a Ca2+/calmodulin-regulated unconventional myosin involved in the transport of vesicles, membranous organelles, and macromolecular complexes composed of proteins and mRNA. The cellular localization of myosin-Va has been described in great detail in several vertebrate cell types, including neurons, melanocytes, lymphocytes, auditory tissues, and a number of cultured cells. Here, we provide an immunohistochemical view of the tissue distribution of myosin-Va in the major endocrine organs. Myosin-Va is highly expressed in the pineal and pituitary glands and in specific cell populations of other endocrine glands, especially the parafollicular cells of the thyroid, the principal cells of the parathyroid, the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas, the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla, and a subpopulation of interstitial testicular cells. Weak to moderate staining has been detected in steroidogenic cells of the adrenal cortex, ovary, and Leydig cells. Myosin-Va has also been localized to non-endocrine cells, such as the germ cells of the seminiferous epithelium and maturing oocytes and in the intercalated ducts of the exocrine pancreas. These data provide the first systematic description of myosin-Va localization in the major endocrine organs of rat.

Lutein is a human serum carotenoid which is not synthesized by humans and thus must be obtained b... more Lutein is a human serum carotenoid which is not synthesized by humans and thus must be obtained by the ingestion of food containing it such as fruits and vegetables. Lutein is present in different forms in those foods as all-trans-lutein, cis-lutein, epoxi-lutein, and lutein linked to proteins. It discusses if the intake of lutein or diets supplemented with lutein or diets rich in fruits and vegetables are important in the prevention of diseases like some cancers, cardiovascular diseases, etc., that may be affected by the antioxidant effect of lutein; or in the prevention of age-related macular degeneration and other eye diseases. The concentration of lutein in fruits and vegetables depends on the species. We've included the concentration of lutein in 74 species reported by different authors since 1990. Currently the quantification of lutein is mainly performed by HPLC, but more investigations into a quantification method for lutein, lutein isomers, and epoxi-lutein are necessary. Improvement of lutein extraction methods is important as well. Methods commonly used in the vegetable and fruit industry like heat treatment, storage conditions, etc. can change lutein concentrations; other factors depend on the plant, for instance the variety, the stage of maturity, etc.

Three groups of newly hatched spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) were held at three different te... more Three groups of newly hatched spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) were held at three different temperatures in order to determine relationships between metabolic, digestive and growth response in rapidly developing larvae. Growth rates were successfully modulated by temperature (5, 8 and 12 °C). Activity levels of trypsin and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were positively linked to specific growth rates at all temperatures. Trypsin showed a positive compensation (higher activity at lower temperature) whereas glycolytic enzymes (pyruvate kinase and Lactate dehydrogenase) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) showed a negative compensation (lower activity at lower temperature). Citrate synthase was not affected by growth rate, indicating that the level of aerobic capacity was adequate in sustaining the high energetic needs associated with rapid growth early in the life of the spotted wolffish. In light of our results, it is suggested that protein digestion, as demonstrated by the activity profile of trypsin in relation to growth rate and temperature, is likely a key growth-limiting agent during the early-life stages of wolffishes. Our results are discussed in comparison with A. lupus, a closely related species displaying different temperature preferences and growth capacities.

Herbivore fitness can be altered by a combination of interacting organisms, such as its food plan... more Herbivore fitness can be altered by a combination of interacting organisms, such as its food plant, conspecifics, and predators/parasitoids. Here, we tested relative effects of plant species, herbivore intraspecific competition type, and spatial distribution of the herbivore among plant units on herbivore survival and whether parasitoids modified these effects. We used an endophagous bruchine seed predator Callosobruchus maculatus for the herbivore, and a braconid wasp Heterospilus prosopidis for the parasitoid. The survival rate of C. maculatus was measured for each of 16 combinations of two plants (bean species, Vigna unguiculata and V. radiata), two competition types of C. maculatus larvae (contest and scramble), two spatial distributions of hosts [sparse (1 C. maculatus larva per seed over 20 seeds) and dense (2 C. maculatus larvae per seed over ten seeds)], and with/without a parasitoid pair. In the absence of the parasitoid, C. maculatus survival rate was lower with V. radiata and in the contest type. With the parasitoid, the proportion parasitized hosts was independent of total host density. Neither the proportion of parasitized hosts nor host survival rate was affected by plant species or host strain, but they were affected by host spatial distribution. When host distribution was dense, a higher proportion of hosts were parasitized, and C. maculatus survival rate was lower. Here we discuss parasitoid potential as a selective agent for the sparse within-pod distribution of its hosts in the field.
