We show that generalized Severi varieties of maps P 1 → P n with images of fixed degree and arithmetic genus are often reducible whenever n ≥ 3. The unfavourable status of these vitamins can represent risk factors for the disease. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between the nutritional status of vitamins A and E (serum levels and dietary intake) and histopathological outcomes in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma (PTC) patients. Subjects/Methods We applied a cross-sectional study (2017–2018) and quantified retinol (ROH) and α-tocopherol (TOH) serum levels and vitamins dietary intake of 46 PTC patients. Serum vitamins were quantified by high efficiency liquid chromatography and vitamins dietary intake was analyzed by 24‐hr dietary recalls. Results Patients with lower ROH serum levels were more likely to present lymph node metastasis and/or angiolymphatic invasion ( p = 0.025). In addition, higher vitamin A and vitamin E intake are related to the absence of extrathyroidal extension ( p = 0.013) and lymph node metastasis ( p = 0.007), respectively. Our findings suggest that a ROH serum level greater than 2.65 μmol/L in PTC patients may be a protective factor against the presence of lymph node metastasis and angiolymphatic invasion. In addition, vitamin A and E intake may protect against extrathyroidal extension and lymph node metastasis. Conclusions A favourable nutritional status (higher serum levels and/or intake) of vitamin A and E may be associated with less aggressive tumours in PTC patients.

Here we focus on rational curves with cusps whose semigroups are of hyperelliptic type. We prove that the variety of (parameterizations of) rational curves of sufficiently large fixed degree ddd in mathbbPn\mathbb{P}^nmathbbPn with a single hyperelliptic cusp of delta-invariant ggg is always of codimension at least (n−1)g(n-1)g(n1)g inside the space of degree-$d$ holomorphic maps mathbbP1rightarrowmathbbPn\mathbb{P}^1 \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^nmathbbP1rightarrowmathbbPn; and that when ggg is small, this bound is exact and the corresponding space of maps is paved by unirational strata indexed by fixed ramification profiles. We also provide evidence for a conjectural generalization of this picture for rational curves with cusps of arbitrary value semigroup rmS{\rm S}rmS, and provide evidence for this conjecture whenever rmS{\rm S}rmS is a gamma\gammagamma-hyperelliptic semigroup ...

Research paper thumbnail of Reviewing Mimosoideae lectins: A group of under explored legume lectins

International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, 2020

Lectins are proteins capable of specific and reversible binding to mono-and/or oligosaccharides, ... more Lectins are proteins capable of specific and reversible binding to mono-and/or oligosaccharides, and within this group, Legume lectins are the most studied. However, most of these studies focus on the Papilionoideae subfamily, with Caesalpinioideae and Mimosoideae lectins being significantly less explored in the literature. The Mimosoideae subfamily consists of at least 79 genera and 3275 species, but, to date, only about 14 lectins have been purified, a fact which shows the lack of studies for this group. Based on their purification protocols, as well as physicochemical and structural properties, Mimosoideae lectins are very heterogeneous. Despite the few studies, a wide variety of biological activities have been tested, including, for example, inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, and antifungal. In this context, the present review aims to summarize the available data regarding the purification, physicochemical and structural properties, as well as biological activities, of lectins extracted from plants of the Mimosoideae subfamily in order to bring more insight to researchers interested in further exploring the potential of these molecules.

Research paper thumbnail of Modulation of all-trans retinoic acid-induced MiRNA expression in neoplastic cell lines: a systematic review

BMC Cancer, 2019

Background: Cancer is a genetic and epigenetic disease that involves inactivation of tumor suppre... more Background: Cancer is a genetic and epigenetic disease that involves inactivation of tumor suppressor genes and activation of proto-oncogenes. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is an isomer of retinoic acid involved in the onset of differentiation and apoptosis of a number of normal and cancer cells, functioning as an anti-cancer agent in several neoplasms. Ectopic changes in the expression of certain microRNAs (miRNAs) occur in response to ATRA, leading to phenotypic alterations in neoplastic cell lines. Moreover, the modulation of miRNA patterns upon ATRA-treatment may represent an effective chemopreventive and anti-cancer therapy strategy. The present systematic review was performed to provide an overview of the modulation of ATRA-induced miRNA expression in different types of neoplastic cells and identify the efficacy of intervention factors (i.e., concentration and duration of treatment) and how they influence expression profiles of oncogenesis-targeting miRNAs. Methods: A systematic search was conducted according to the PRISMA statement via the US National Library of Medicine MEDLINE/PubMed bibliographic search engine. Results: The search identified 31 experimental studies involving human cell lines from nine different cancer types (neuroblastoma, acute myeloid leukemia, breast cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, glioma, glioblastoma, embryonal carcinoma, and colorectal cancer) treated with ATRA at concentrations ranging from 10 − 3 μmol/L to 10 2 μmol mol/L for 24 h to 21 days. Conclusion: The concentrations used and the duration of treatment of cancer cells with ATRA varied widely. The presence of ATRA in the culture medium of cancer cells was able to modulate the expression of more than 300 miRNAs, and inhibit invasive behavior and deregulated growth of cancer cells, resulting in total tumor remission in some cases. ATRA may thus be broadly effective for neoplasm treatment and prevention, although these studies may not accurately represent in vivo conditions. Additional studies are required to elucidate ATRA-induced miRNA modulation during neoplasm treatment.

The key step involved the preparation of the enantiomerically pure β-halohydrin (1S)-2-chloro-1-(2,4dichlorophenyl)-1-ethanol through kinetic resolution of the corresponding racemic acetate, via hydrolytic approach, mediated by lipase from Thermomyces lanuginosus or Novozym 435 ®. This latter enzyme proved to be a robust biocatalyst in the kinetic resolution, leading to the (S)-β-halohydrin with high selectivity (e.e. > 99%, E > 200) in just 15 min, at 45 °C, and being reused for five-times with maintenance high values of both conversion and enantioselectivity. Subsequently, the (S)-β-halohydrin was subjected to a mesylation reaction and the mesylated derivative reacted with 1cyanomethylimidazole leading to luliconazole in 43% yield and enantiomeric excess > 99%.

One hundred three breast cancer samples and 95 normal breast samples, as the non-malignant controls, were studied. DNA extraction was verified by human beta-globin gene amplification, and polymerase chain reaction was conducted based on HPV L1-specific consensus primers MY09/MY11 and GP5+/GP6+, followed by nested multiplex polymerase chain reaction with type-specific primers for the E6/E7 consensus region. Human papillomavirus DNA was detected in 51 (49.5%) breast carcinoma samples and 15 (15.8%) normal breast samples (p<0.0001). Human papillomavirus genotypes 6 and 11 were identified in 15.2% of all samples. The high frequency of human papillomavirus infection in breast cancer samples indicates a potential role of this virus in breast carcinogenesis in the studied participants.

Research paper thumbnail of Strategies of covalent immobilization of a recombinant Candida antarctica lipase B on pore-expanded SBA-15 and its application in the kinetic resolution of ( R , S )-Phenylethyl acetate

Journal of Molecular Catalysis B: Enzymatic, 2016

A recombinant Candida antarctica lipase B expressed in Pichia pastoris (LIPB) was immobilized on ... more A recombinant Candida antarctica lipase B expressed in Pichia pastoris (LIPB) was immobilized on poreexpanded SBA-15 previously modified 3-amino-propyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and activated with two bifunctional reagents, glutaraldehyde (GA) or divinylsulfone (DVS), producing the biocatalysts: SBA-15-APTES-GA-LIPB and SBA-15-APTES-DVS-LIPB, respectively. After LIPB immobilization, both preparations were then modified with glutaraldehyde, producing the biocatalysts: SBA-15-APTES-GA-LIPB-GA, SBA-15-APTES-DVS-LIPB-DVS. Alternatively, LIPB was immobilized on SBA-15-APTES-DVS at pH 10.2 and the biocatalyst was named SBA-15-APTES-DVS-LIPB-pH10. The different biocatalysts were assayed to check the effect of the immobilization strategies on the stability and in the substrate specificity during the kinetic resolution of (R,S)-Phenylethyl acetate. The thermal stability of some new preparations were higher than LIPB adsorbed on SBA-15 (SBA-15-LIPB) and LIPB immobilized on Glyoxyl-agarose. High conversions in the enzymatic kinetic resolution were obtained (43-50%) for all biocatalysts studied. Regarding activity and stability, the SBA-15-APTES-DVS-LIPB-pH10 was the most successful strategy, since, in first cycle, the maximum conversion was obtained (50%), and the biocatalyst remained active and enantioselective even after five successive cycles.

Plant belongs to the family Cactacea and it is found in the Brazil (reaching Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul states). The purpose was to evaluate the effects of plant on biochemical and corporal profiles of Wistar rats. The 80 animals were divided randomly into 4 groups by sex (n = 10 females and 10 males per group) as follows: G1 group (water/rat food ad libitum); G2 group (drink A: commercial condensed milk, sugar and water/rat food ad libitum); G3 group (drink B: P. aculeata juice/rat food ad libitum); G4 group (drink C: commercial condensed milk, sugar and P. aculeate juice/rat food ad libitum). After 35 days their biochemical and corporal profiles were analyzed (cholesterol, glycemia, triglycerides, HDL-c, AST, ALT, Lee Index, weight and visceral fat). Intake of the plant caused no changes in the lipid profile of Wistar rats. However, intake in male rats of the same prevented the increase in triglycerides front of a hypercaloric diet. There were significant changes in glycemic index due to the high carbohydrate content of the plant. The plant was effective in reducing the levels of AST and ALT in male rats and ALT only in females. The use of the plant did not cause significant changes in the index of Lee but the Pereskia aculeata Miller may reduce visceral fat gain in female with a regular diet.

A B S T R A C T The postural problems related to the spine most often have their origin in childhood more exactly on the school stage. Experts recommend physical activity for correcting postural deviations and classical ballet one of the main activities. Thus the study aimed to evaluate the postural profile of female students, practitioners and non-practitioners of classical ballet from the 6th to 9th grade from a private school of Timon - MA. We evaluated sixteen (16) students with an average of 13.7 ± 1.85 years practitioners of classical ballet (CP) and non-practicing classical ballet (NP) selected by convenience. These were evaluated according to the protocol Kendall (2007) which was used a plumb line and a posture meter for postural analysis of the participants. The postures found in the total group of students were 37.5% for normal posture, 12.5% kyphosis, lordosis 18.75%, 6.25% scoliosis, kyphosis and lordosis 18.75% and 6.25% kyphosis lordosis and scoliosis. Evaluated separately the groups of practitioners and non practitioners showed 50% normal posture (PB) 25% (NP), or 75% of the sample (NP) have a problem posture. By analyzing the postures of the total group, the percentage of students with normal posture abnormalities differs from p = 0.035, within group (PB) and (NP), the first showed p = 0.023 for differences between normal posture and postural abnormalities while second difference was not found. In the comparison between groups (PB) and (NP) there were no statistical differences between the positions presented p = 0.123. The analysis was done by the chi - square test, p <0.05 - SPSS 15.0 for Windows. The results showed a higher percentage of normal posture between both groups with a prevalence in the group practicing ballet. Indicating a better position in the group putting the practice of classical ballet as an option for physical activity to maintain body posture.
