Whereas control membranes based on conventional polymers degraded at temperatures of 175 C, the robust membranes could withstand exposure to temperatures of 250 C without damage. They also have excellent chemical resistance and unique permselectivity characteristics

Aflatoxin at 16 dosages ranging from 0 to 3.797 micrograms/g of feed was fed to six groups of 15 young chickens per treatment ingesting a 2 or 4% fat diet for 3 wk. The weights of the body, liver, bursa of Fabricius, and spleen and the total lipid content of the liver were measured. Mathematical models were fitted to the data and dose-response curves were predicted as continuous functions of aflatoxin concentration. Quadratic polynomials fit body weight and spleen weight whereas plateau-linear models fit liver weight and liver lipid content in both 2 and 4% fat diets. The weight of the bursa of Fabricius was fit equally well by quadratic and linear plateau models. Dietary fat had negligible effects on the apparent MED (micrograms of aflatoxin per gram of feed)...
“What a View!”: Associations Between Young People’s Views of the Late Teens and Twenties and Indices of Adjustment and Maladjustment

Participants included 772 college students in the United States with an average age of 19.51 years (SD = 1.69). The majority of participants were female (69 %), White (69 %), and not living at home (90 %). Five factors were identified reflecting different views of what the time period should be about including risk-taking (e.g., a time to drink and get drunk), uncertainty (e.g., a time of confusion), role preparation (e.g., a time to prepare to marry and be a parent), possibilities (e.g., a time of optimism and fun), and stress (e.g., a time of high pressure). Each view of emerging adulthood was differentially linked with indices of adjustment (e.g., prosocial behaviors, school engagement) and maladjustment (e.g., binge drinking, depression).

Specifically, evolutionary tracks are calculated for CO white dwarfs with masses in the range of 0.6 - 1.3 solar masses and accreting H-rich gas at rates of between 10-6 to 10-10 solar masses per year. Participants included 550 university students from four different universities across the United States (M age = 19.87, SD = 2.00; 333 females). The majority of the respondents were Caucasian (60.9%), living away from home (89%). Results of latent profile analyses revealed four classes: 'low other-orientation', 'high fear, moderate community', 'high community, low fear' and 'high other-orientation'. These groups differed in meaningful ways on measures of prosocial behavior, identity development and well-being.

The effects of translucent polyethylene sheeting as a thermal covering to eradicate Pueraria mont... more The effects of translucent polyethylene sheeting as a thermal covering to eradicate Pueraria montana (kudzu) were investigated at Clemson, South Carolina on a clay loam. In 2005, the highest reduction of live root crowns was observed where P. montana was covered for the entire growing season (May-October) with a reduction of 42% of live root crowns compared with the control plots. Where P. montana was covered for alternate weeks throughout the growing season live root crowns were reduced by 35%. Covering P. montana for one week and then uncovering for four weeks repeatedly through the season killed 24% of root crowns. In 2006, the second year of treatment to the same plots, the three solarization treatments had similar efficacy of about 97%. The use of polyethylene sheeting appears not to be cost-effective for general control of large P. montana infestations, but may be useful for small patches.

Consistent with a greater emphasis on relationships, relationally manipulative forms of aggression may be particularly salient during this time period. Based on content analysis of perceptions of 134 undergraduate students, this study documents a significant spectrum of normative aggressive behaviors among emerging adults. Participant responses were coded into categories reflective of current aggression research. Findings indicate that perceptions of salient aggressive strategies vary by gender of both the aggressor and the victim. For example, male aggression was most often described as being verbal or directly physical in nature, especially in same-sex dyads. In contrast, female aggression was most often described as being indirectly relational, verbal, or non-verbal (ignoring/avoiding) across dyads. However, direct relational aggression was also fairly prominent in perceptions of female aggression toward males.

Exposure to media violence, including violent video gaming, can have a cognitive desensitization ... more Exposure to media violence, including violent video gaming, can have a cognitive desensitization effect, lowering empathic concern for others in need. Since emerging adulthood offers increased opportunities to volunteer, strengthen relationships, and initiate new relationships, decreases in empathic concern and prosocial behavior may prove inhibitive to optimal development during this time. For these reasons, the current study investigated associations between violent video gaming, empathic responding, and prosocial behavior enacted toward strangers, friends, and family members. Participants consisted of 780 emerging adults (M age = 19.60, SD = 1.86, range = 18-29, 69% female, 69% Caucasian) from four universities in the United States. Results showed small to moderate effects between playing violent video gaming and lowered empathic concern for both males and females. In addition, lowered empathic concern partially mediated the pathways between violent video gaming and prosocial behavior toward all three targets (at the level of a trend for females), but was most strongly associated with lower prosocial behavior toward strangers. Discussion highlights how violent video gaming is associated with lower levels of prosocial behavior through the mechanism of decreased empathic concern, how this association can affect prosocial behavior differently across target, and finally what implications this might have for development during emerging adulthood.

FXS also seems to affect language development. Males with FXS, who are typically more affected than females, show moderate to severe delays in vocabulary, grammar, and pragmatic skills. They also appear to have greater delays in their ability to expressive themselves verbally (expressive language) as compared to their ability to understand what is being communicated to them (receptive language). Researchers generally agree that discourse skills or conversational skills are impaired in males with FXS. Common language behaviors exhibited by males with FXS include: perseveration (uncontrollable repetition of a word), inappropriate turn-taking, poor speech topic maintenance, and gaze aversion.
