The aim of this research was to find out what the audience understands by quality in online journ... more The aim of this research was to find out what the audience understands by quality in online journalism. In addition, it should be investigated whether age, gender and education in-fluence the subjective understanding of the quality of online news. A total of sixteen qualitative guided interviews were conducted with participants aged 20 to 29 and 50 to 59 years. In the sample, attention was paid to gender balance and level of education. The results show that the following criteria are important to the audience for the evaluation of quality in online news: truth, opportunities for participation, diversity, actuality, independence, professionalism/prominence, networking/social media, comprehensibility/language, research quality and transparency. Multimedia and entertainment in online journalism are less important to the respondents. Age, gender and education play a role in the understanding of quality in online journalism.
