At the moment, the information that is collected after the main design phase is not often stored in a re-usable way. On the other hand, large amount of decisions made by design engineers during the design phase is either not stored or documented at all. This lack of lifecycle knowledge causes large amount of unnecessary costs in a form of scrapping, re-work and additional work hours, therefore providing a potential for large savings. This paper explains the current situation, the challenges, the problems and the consequences of poor knowledge management. The problem of hidden product knowledge is a complex one and solving it requires changes to processes, tools, and maybe even to ways certain functions in companies are organized and managed. This paper proposes ways to at ...

Digital Manufacturing (DM) is proposed as a means for improved ECM. This paper introduces the preliminary findings of a case study in manufacturing industry. The main proposed development targets include: Integrated PLM architecture and processes, parallel product structures, baseline structure for virtual prototypes, richer information model, and redesigned product development process. The results are categorized in the dimensions of internal and external functions, new product development and standard production, corrective changes and betterment, physical and virtual product. The novelty of this paper within PLM research emerges from the nature of business and focused product development processes of the case, because majority of related literature is related to mass production.

The processing times for Engineering Change Requests (ECR) vary from hours to years. The long processing times lead to unnecessary delays to requested fixes and improvements. This paper is based on analysis of Engineering Change Objects and semi-structured interviews in a case company, where the number of ECRs has been increasing significantly. The goal of the research was to find out reasons for varying ECR processing times. However, analyzing the data afterwards is difficult because part of the modification history disappears during the process.
