Research paper thumbnail of Dosimetric effect of multileaf collimator leaf width in intensity-modulated radiotherapy delivery techniques for small- and large-volume targets

We retrospectively selected previously treated 5 intracranial and 5 head-neck patients for this study to represent small-(range, 18.37-72.75 cc; mean, 42.99 cc) and large-volume (range, 312.31-472.84 cc; mean, 361.14 cc) targets. A 6-MV photon beam data was configured for Brianlab m3 (3 mm), Varian Millennium 120 (5 mm) and Millennium 80 (10 mm) MLCs in the Eclipse treatment-planning system. Sliding window and step-shoot IMRT plans were generated for intracranial patients using all the above-mentioned MLCs; but due to the field size limitation of Brainlab MLC, we used only 5-mm and 10-mm MLCs in the head-and-neck patients. Target conformity, dose to the critical organs and dose to normal tissues were recorded and evaluated. Although the 3-mm MLC resulted in better target conformity (mean difference of 7.7% over 5-mm MLC and 12.7% over 10-mm MLC) over other MLCs for small-volume targets, it increased the total monitor units of the plans. No appreciable differences in terms of target conformity, organ at risk and normal-tissue sparing were observed between the 5-mm and 10-mm MLCs for large-volume targets. The effect of MLC leaf width was not quantifiably different in sliding window and step and shoot techniques. In addition, we observed that there was no additional benefit to the sliding-window (SW) technique when compared to the step-shoot (SS) technique as a result of reduction of MLC leaf width.

Objective: To find out the situation of children infected/affected from HIV. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in Sunsari District of Eastern Nepal. Total 131 respondents from Sunsari District Children aged between 0-18 years and parents of these children on their behalf were visited during the study period. The analysis was done by using statistical software SPSS (statistical package for social science) version 17. Percentage and proportion was calculated where ever applicable. Result: Children between the ages of 0-6 years represented 36.4% of the sample. In 92.4% of families, father was the first to be infected. Only 9.1% of the children know about their parents HIV status. The school knew 12.1% of the children being HIV infected/affected and among them 70.4% reported of bad behavior of school. Nearly 68.2% of them were not provided any help for their education. Almost 41.7% of the respondents were taking any medicine and among them 30.3% were taking antiretroviral drug. Nearly 29% of them think when there is no discrimination they will have dignified life. Conclusion: HIV and AIDS in children is an alarming issue in Sunsari because of the increasing trend of new cases. Low economic opportunities, low literacy level, low levels of awareness usually among underprivileged and disadvantage group, and long incubation period make this infection a huge Public Health challenge to face and cope with.

Objective: The major objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of DV among expectant mothers who had attended in Iran University of Medical Sciences' (IUMS) hospitals. Design: This is a cross sectional study, in which the subjects were interviewed by using a standard questionnaire. Sample: 1800 subjects were selected, by using consecutive sampling in 6 major hospitals of IUMS. Results: The prevalence of DV was found to be 60.6%, including 3 types of physical, psychological and sexual, with the prevalence of 14.6%, 60.5% and 23.5% respectively. Severe physical DV was 43.3. Severe psychological and sexual DV were also found (24.2 and 3.5%). Conclusion: DV had a high prevalence in this study. It is recommended that all accessible pregnant women be screened for DV. Study of the prevalence of DV within the community with a larger sample size, and using cluster sampling method would be of immense value.
