Die chemotaxonomische Bedeutung dieser Verbindungen wird kurz diskutiert.

Multiple shoots cultures exhibited an increase in withanolide A accumulation compared to shoots of the mother plant. In vitro generated root cultures as well as callus and suspension cultures also produced withanolides albeit at lower levels.

(Lamiaceae) has been investigated for the first time. The GC-MS analysis of the oil showed the presence of about 25 monoterpenoids including pinocamphone (56.4%), beta-pinene (12.7%), isopinocamphone (4.3%), alpha-phellandrene (4.6%), and isopinocampheol (3.7%).

Furthermore seco-caryophyllenes and phenylpropane derivatives were isolated. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and few chemical transformations.

A number of Solanaceae plants have been described to possess medicinal properties such as members of the genus Withania, W. somnifera (Ashwagandha) and W. coagulans. Rejuvenating properties of these herbs are well documented and ascribed to the presence of a set of pharmacologically important compounds such as withanolides, withanamides and alkaloids. Tropane alkaloids (Hyoscyamine, Atropine, Scopolamine) are amongst the oldest known drugs. Tropinone reductases (TRs) are the branching enzymes in the tropane biosynthetic pathway belonging to the SDR family of proteins. These catalyze the conversion of tropinone into tropine or pseudotropine thereby bifurcating the pathway leading to synthesis of hyoscyamine, scopolamine and calystegines. Tropinone reductase genes were isolated and characterized from W. somnifera and W.coagulans. The recombinant enzymes exhibited characteristic c...

The acid-catalyzed lactonization of this γ-hydroxy acid afforded a rearranged lactone 3, the structure of which was as signed by detailed 2D-NMR studies. A reaction mechanism involving a 1,3-butadiene intermediate is proposed.

Compound 1 possesses an uncommon 17α-oriented side chain whereas compound 2 has 1α,3β - dihydroxy group which is a molecule of biogenetic significance for withasteroids.

A new hydroxy unsaturated fatty acid, namely, 16-hydroxypentacos- 14(z)-enoic acid, has also been isolated.
