He is a poet of the masses and whatever he sees around, fills a tender heart intensely with pity, anxiety and concern and therefore, he tries to define inner complexities of feelings and thoughts vividly and frankly while conveying a message of love and compassion. He touches different subjects and while making an objective study, he establishes a silent relationship of empathy with the reader. He is obvious, explicit and plain about life and philosophy. He is sad when he observes hardnosed apathy towards what was glorious in past. Computer age has deprived man of fine sensibility and plainness of words he often writes on paper. 'A Caged Bird' is a reflection of what man has done while he takes a mouse in hand.

Raghupathi's third poetry collection: "The Images of a Growing Dying City" is taken up for critical assessment and evaluation in this paper. The volume is a collection in which K.V. Raghupathi has presented 81 sordid images of a city showing how it is simply dying (in terms of values and quality of life) in the name of growth. The poet by drawing the images of the degenerating city indeed makes it to represent any other city.

It is sometimes referred to as militant fiction. The war novel came of age during the 19 th century works such as Stendhal's The Charterhouse of Parma, featuring the battle of Waterloo, Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, about the Napoleonic wars in Russia, and Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage about the American Civil War novel as it has come down to us today. All these works feature realistic depictions of major battles, visceral scenes of insights into the nature of heroism, cowardice and morality in war. Jayanti M Dalal is a Gujarati writer who has to his credit 25 published books as on today. The novel 'Bleeding Heights of Kargil', translated from Gujarati into English, touches upon the issue of cross-border terrorism in the name of religion. Jayanti M Dalal impeccably describes how the terrorist outfits recruit young men and systematically become the victims of phoney religious propaganda and allurements like wine, women and wealth. His characteristic of writing novels on problems affecting the masses today creates an interesting account of how a young Hindu man is converted to Islam and ultimately cast as a hard core terrorist. The author presents a vivid description of the terrain of Indo-Pak border and the terrorist camps operative in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK). The detailed account of Kargil war brings alive the bloody scenes of war. It all started with the kidnapping of Viplav who was first abducted and later released and inducted into terrorists' gang. A vagabond, Viplav had an unsuccessful education as a student who defied his parent's warnings. In fact, they wanted him to be a good citizen. He is now in the hands of terrorists who are taking him for training in Pakistan. He crossed the border along with others to enter Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. Viplav now becomes Wasim Ali Khan who was engaged in operations against India. "Mohammed Kasam spotted him in Mumbai. He has got all the qualities of being a great militant. You know very well how to keep him in bait, don't you? Wine, Women and Cast! You have to see to it that the drug used for brain wing gets administered in his body at least once a month. I had secretly administered the first dose with his tea the day we crossed the border" (Bleeding Heights of Kargil, 101) The misguiding of Kashmiri youth spread so much of bitterness among people of both the countries. They now become arch rivals in every field. The Kashmiri terrorists are not capable of leading the war on a greater scale, so they imported foreign help in the form of manpower, arms and ammunition and infiltrated the youth into Kashmir. The Afghan militants spread terror in their attempt to demoralize India. The Kashmiris thought the Afghan militants would help them to liberate Kashmir and protect them from the military atrocities. In the words of Jayanti M Dalal; These foreign soldiers have aggravated the situation in Kashmir by looting innocent citizens and molesting Kashmir girls. (BHK, 181) Wasim was very much shaken to hear Sita's sad story. Soon, his sorrow was replaced by anger and feelings of revenge for those who tortured the innocents. A sudden transformation was found in Wasim. The tyrant had become the messaiah. Still, the police was searching for the most www.the-criterion.com

His debut memoir is titled A Time of Madness. The partition of India in 1947 into two separate nations, Pakistan and India, was considered a manoeuvre by the Colonial British to use Divide and Rule tactics. The end consequence was deadly mayhem. People lost their identity while attempting to establish themselves in a new nation and their native country. In the ensuing mass migration, they were scarred and exiled. Millions of innocent individuals were treated inhumanely. The turmoil and disorder of life danced on them. This book depicts the author's personal adventure against this background. To the readers, his own experiences are a stark reality. "Consequently, when the memory of Partition is irrevocably obliterated with the rise of my generation, we shall be left with no hope," he finishes the Memoir. The greatest tragedy will not be the loss of lives and property during the 1947 turmoil. Those efforts would have been in vain since they never inspired us."

Pre-independent and post-independent India marked two different phases in poetry. Poets predominantly dealt with conventional themes in the past. But, one distinguishing feature of Post-independent poetry has been to portray a diversified representation of multiple themes. A careful analysis of thoughts, feelings, and psyche of the poets not only genuinely but eloquently reveals urban 'cynicism and anguish' and reveals 'hope and anticipation' quite aptly. Poets differed according to the age in which they had lived but ultimately, their poetry became a subject matter of anguish and agony. There have been obvious expressions of urban life in the beginnings but as the poets emerged in the early twentieth century, rural side of the life figured prominently in their writings. PCK Prem observes, "Poetry depicting rural background and the inner world of man is also conscious of the collapse of human bonds and aspirations even as sufferings, struggles, and failures dishearten but carry elements of hope, and thus, infuse a spirit to live life persuasively". (2006: 21) Poetry is not only a study of thoughts or emotions but it also involves reading of a huge poetic landscape, literary yield, political thought process and its evolution, and the social and economic environment. From 1920, after taking into consideration various social and historical facts, one assumes that contemporary Indian English Poetry begins its ambitious journey-in rising cities and other rural areas, developing towns of various regions to be more specific Indian English Poetry begins its journey. One such element is the delineation of bucolic elements in poetry. India is predominantly a rural country side with 60% of population living in villages. The countryside is a geographic area located outside the cities and towns. Indian villages have low population density and small settlements. The poetry of T.V. Reddy is rooted in bucolic elements. In fact, all his poetry collections carry the hallmarks of rural life, pastoral panorama and idyllic nature. They beautify his poetry against rural background. Rural life in India forms the very basis of economy and essential living conditions. In fact, it is the backbone of development in diversity. Life in cities is always different from life in rural areas.

In fact, life becomes wayward when people lose moral values. Values are important for survival. World has lost its value-based order. All chaos and disturbances are the result of immoral practices. One should lead a life of morality. When the society has crossed its limitations, it is because of lost values. Enmity, grudge, jealousy and cruelty are the disorders of modern life. Culture and region go together in every aspect of life. Literature is an important vehicle of culture. Against this backdrop, Basavaraj Naikar is the story writer of contemporary times. He hails from Karnataka. He has four story collections to his credit. One of his collections was shortlisted for Commonwealth Literary Prize. He represents India in his stories which present the culture, language, and typical lifestyles against all odds. He appears autobiographical here and there in the story. A writer of eminence and cultural ambassador, Naikar delineates in his lucid but impressive style the stories known for modernity and regional flavour. Basavaraj Naikar occupies an important position in the history of Indian short story writers in English. A retired professor of English, Dharwad University, Karnataka, he is a translator, author freelancer and a story writer. My paper focuses on Basavaraj Naikar's second story collection The Golden Servant and Other Stories. The twelve stories reinforce the author's portrayal of the life, customs and manners of a particular region of India, a microcosm of the country, like R.K.Narayan's Malgudi. The themes in the stories are unquestionably significant comments on the universal human situation. The collection deals with the broad spectrum of his thoughts and perceptions ranging from the historical to the contemporary, religious to the secular and elemental to the academic in a realistic style. Basavaraj Naikar has been able to give us in his stories innumerable facets of contemporary India. Especially, the themes against worldliness, female heroism, chastity, violence and revenge, transformation approach of a woman, selfish and treacherous behaviour of a prince ,rural life of revenge on separating close friends in cross roads, politics as greater than literature in the Indian conflict, illegal love and its alienating impact on the life of a woman, corruption of being a peon in the guest house, heroism of a Rani and her courage and the academic life in being research supervisors, non-academic atmosphere on the campuses, lack of proper libraries , exploitation of clerical and menial work coming in the academic progress of their work. Cultural vision is the chief forte of the collection. The entire oeuvre presents the problems and possibilities of life in the perspective of socio-cultural resonance. The culture of India is the way of life of the people of India. The Indian culture often labelled as amalgamation of several cultures, spans across the Indian sub-continent and has been influenced by a rich legacy of history that is several millennia old. The Indian literature too flourished with tradition, custom and culture. Indian English Writers have amply demonstrated this reality in their works. Basavaraj Naikar hails from Karnataka whose writings reflect more or less regional, cultural and social perspectives rooted in Kannada land. He carries with him a rich legacy of writings which are known for cultural vision of north Karnataka, the
