Clinically variable types of lesions such as papules, nodules and plaques have been reported. We present a case of a 27-year-old woman with a 1-year history of erythematous papular and nodular lesions on the malar and right axillary regions, previously misdiagnosed as acne. She reported no fever, malaise or weight loss, while physical examination and laboratory workup were normal. Bacteriological and mycobacteriological cultures were negative. Histopathological findings showed dense infiltration of inflammatory cells involving the entire dermis, consisting of large macrophages with emperipolesis, S100 and CD68 positive, neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes and plasma cells. The patient was treated with oral prednisolone without improvement. Dapsone was subsequently initiated with favourable clinical response. The present a...

Research paper thumbnail of Covid-19 diagnosis by combining RT-PCR and pseudo-convolutional machines to characterize virus sequences

The proliferation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to the whole world caused more than 250,000 deaths worl... more The proliferation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to the whole world caused more than 250,000 deaths worldwide and over 4 million confirmed cases. The severity of Covid-19, the exponential rate at which the virus proliferates, and the rapid exhaustion of the public health resources are critical factors. The RT-PCR with virus DNA identification is still the benchmark Covid-19 diagnosis method. In this work we propose a new technique for representing DNA sequences: they are divided into smaller sequences with overlap in a pseudo-convolutional approach, and represented by co-occurrence matrices. This technique analyzes the DNA sequences obtained by the RT-PCR method, eliminating sequence alignment. Through the proposed method, it is possible to identify virus sequences from a large database: 347,363 virus DNA sequences from 24 virus families and SARS-CoV-2. Experiments with all 24 virus families and SARS-CoV-2 (multi-class scenario) resulted 0.822222 ± 0.05613 for sensitivity and 0.99974 ± 0.0...

Therein, 84% sequences mixed among CN.01AE.HST/IDU-2, most of which were sampled before 2010 and born in Southeast Asia. 14% sequences clustered with CN.01AE.MSM-4 and-5. A distinct sub-cluster with small divergence that consisted of 15 Japanese variants was formed inside CN.01AE.MSM-4 and the tMRCA of CN.01AE.MSM-4 and the latter sub-cluster were around 1996 and 2006. For other four major lineages, we have not found any significant transmission cluster structure for specific geographical regions. Conclusion This results demonstrated the Chinese CRF01_AE variants have disseminated to other countries but have not scaled, and the immigrant modes of CRF01_AE variants from Asia to global has changed. Our study provided the evidences of regional and global dissemination of Chinese CRF01-AE lineages and highlighted the importance of shaping the newest global landscape of HIV and the necessity to implement the effective measures to reduce global spread of HIV. The insect is partially controlled by biological and chemical means, but still causes significant economic losses to sugarcane growers and processors. Proteins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis, Bt proteins, have been used to control sugarcane borer in maize (Zea mays) for the past decade. In sugarcane, the expression of individual Bt proteins has been reported several times. However practical use of Bt proteins requires their use as part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system that includes the delivery of high doses of protein and the use of a refuge to slow the evolution of insect resistance to the protein. Here we demonstrate the feasibility of using Bt proteins to protect sugarcane from sugarcane borer in a commercial setting. We have expressed two Bt proteins with differing modes of action (Cry1Ab and Cry2Ab) in commercial sugarcane varieties, demonstrated efficacy against sugarcane borer in the field and describe a strategy for trait deployment in this tropical crop with complex genetics that limits trait introgression by backcrossing.

Research paper thumbnail of Synergistic Effect of Adsorption and Enzymatic Conversion in the Bisphenol-A Removal by Laccase Immobilized on Poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate)

Laccase immobilized on GMA-co-EGDMA containing the phenyldiazonium functional group showed the highest activity (96.3 U g-1). The immobilized laccase was used for removal of bisphenol-A (BPA) from aqueous solution. The temperature effect was significant on activity, but insignificant on BPA removal by the immobilized laccase. In the temperature range 10-60 °C, the removal of BPA by laccase in the immobilized form was about four times higher than that in the free form. Swelling does not affect the activity of immobilized laccase, but after 8 cycles of 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) oxidation, non-swollen immobilized laccase was able to retain 71% of the starting activity while the 24 h swollen kept 61%. At neutral pH, adsorption onto the immobilized laccase accounted for 92% of the BPA removed while enzymatic conversion accounted for 8%. However, when increasing the pH to 10, the fraction of BPA removed by adsorption decreased to 67% and by enzymatic conversion increased to 33%.
