Through their actions they can deliver healthy, happy, inclusive, sustainable cities, which ensure the protection of our environment. While this is clearly an essential enterprise, it will be no mean feat. To succeed will require a fundamental reimagination of our current housing system and the investment structures behind it. Globally, housing has become increasingly financialized. Rather than being treated as a fundamental human right—a place where individuals, families, and communities can live in peace, security, and dignity—housing is often primarily valued as a vehicle for generating wealth ( Farha, 2017 ). Real estate investment has transformed into an extractive industry ( Sassen, 2014 ). It incentivizes the construction of housing, generating greater levels of greenhouse gas emissions, while increasing rents and housing costs, all as a means of generating profit ( Farha et al., 20...

She is in conversation with Am Johal following her tenure as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Housing, a post that saw her travelling the world to connect with people who were struggling with inadequate and precarious housing or homelessness, and to work with governments to uphold housing as a human right. In this interview, Leilani speaks to concerning patterns in housing globally, including homelessness, evictions, unaffordability, and the financialization of housing. They discuss opportunities in Canadian housing policy, Vancouver’s housing crisis, and the incredible importance of having a safe place to call home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Leilani Farha is the former UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Housing and Global Director of The Shift. Her work is animated by the principle that housing is a social good, not a commodity. Leilani has helped develop global human rights standards on the right to housing, including through her topical reports on homelessness, the financialization of housing, informal settlements, rights-based housing strategies, and the first UN Guidelines for the implementation of the right to housing. She is the central character in the documentary PUSH regarding the financialization of housing, screening around the world. Leilani Launched The Shift in 2017 with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and United Cities and Local Government

International experience has shown that NHRIs face unique challenges in living up to this expectation. They may encounter limitations on their mandate or powers resulting from their founding statutes, a shortage of human and financial resources, or constraints arising from the social and political environment in which they function. Therefore, out of necessity, NHRIs are compelled to make strategic choices about how to focus their efforts to ensure that they are having the desired impact. This Handbook argues that these choices must ensure that gender equality is in the forefront of their considerations, particularly as the NHRIs address economic, social and cultural rights (ESC) rights .

However, there are special conditions in which they are allowed to decide about their health. The greater the judgment and experience limitations in minors, the less weight is given to the values and objectives they express. Furthermore, the more adverse consequences might be, the higher the level of authority that is demanded to decide on behalf of the minor, thus granting the state the capability to guarantee the well-being of the minor. Case report: A 12-year-old female patient was presented with a diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, with precarious social and family background; evolution of the disease obstructed by the disregard of the treatment due to her unsanitary and extreme poverty conditions. Both of her parents died soon after the start of the treatment, and she was kept under the care of her half-sister of legal age. The work and the ethical dilemma of the pediatrician and the staff of Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez are exposed within the building of support networks with the objective of prioritizing the minor's well-being, without allowing family break-up or disintegration, thus succeeding in her recovery. Conclusions: The case was submitted to the Hospital Bioethics Committee. Interinstitutional support networks were built to improve dynamics of the family, thus solving the needs of the minor. Despite the misfortune of the situation, the disease was successfully overcome.
