Research paper thumbnail of ASHRAE Standard 90--75: economic impact on selected industries and the design profession

This is the final of three articles on the potential energy, economic, and institutional impacts ... more This is the final of three articles on the potential energy, economic, and institutional impacts of Standard 90--75. The articles are based upon a recently completed report for the Federal Energy Administration by Arthur D. Little, Inc., entitled, ''An Impact Assessment of ASHRAE Standard 90-75, Energy Conservation in New Building Design.'' Previous articles focused upon the standard's impact on building energy usage and economics and upon its potential impact on national energy demand. Any major change in the configuration, materials, or component equipment of buildings would be reflected as an impact upon one or more suppliers to the construction sector, and, in the case of Standard 90--75, these market impacts would occur within several industries. It is appropriate to classify the affected industries as either building materials suppliers (insulation, siding materials, flat glass, and window fabricators), building equipment manufacturers (electric lamps, lighting fixtures, gas and electric meters, and hot water heaters), or HVAC system manufacturers (both equipment and controls). The purpose here is to review the maximum potential loss or gain in annual market size within each of these industries based upon the full implementation and enforcement of 90 to 75 as an energy conservation standard for new construction only.more » In addition, some comments are offered on the impact of the standard on the design profession, specifically the design process and the industry's annual billings. The roles of nitrate anion, ozone, and surface active sites on clays are discussed. Chain scission by acid/base hydrolysis is reversible by re-condensation of the resultant silanol. Oxidation and reduction are not factors. UV is not a significant cause of chain scission but causes methyl radical cleavage at the surface reducing the hydrophobicity of the surface. The water repellency returns as the polymer chains rotate to expose fresh methyl groups. UV in the absence of other factors does not promote this cleavage at natural levels; rather, the splitting of ozone or nitrate ion to give atomic oxygen by UV occurs followed by free radical attack on the Si-C bond. The ultimate products are silica, water and carbon dioxide. -- AATA

The problem is that previous work on NPSNET, the virtual environment and visual simulation platform developed by the Computer Science Department at the Naval PostGraduate School in Monterey, California, has focused primarily on individual ground force elements with little emphasis on naval forces or crew concepts. This restricts the practical use of the system to ground force training while ignoring joint force training with sea and air components and between crew members. One solution to is expand the capability of NPSNET by incorporating a variety of vehicles from different components of the military with the added capability of multiple workstation control of a single vehicle. The approach taken is to expand NPSNET to simulate helicopter Anti-Submarine Warfare. This work focuses on realis...

Endotoxin alters the smooth muscle function of blood vessels, probably by means of an increased production of the potent vasodilator nitric oxide (NO). The present study was accomplished to determine how the inhibition of NO synthesis influences cardiovascular performance in an ovine model of hyperdynamic endotoxemia. Endotoxemia was induced in five range ewes (41 +/- 2 kg) by continuous infusion of Escherichia coli endotoxin (LPS, 10 ng.kg-1.min-1) over the entire study period. After 24 h of LPS infusion, cardiac output increased from 5.2 +/- 0.3 to 7.9 +/- 0.6 (SE) 1/min (P less than 0.05) and mean arterial pressure and systemic vascular resistance index fell from 92 +/- 5 to 79 +/- 6 mmHg (P = 0.08) and from 1,473 +/- 173 to 824 +/- 108 dyn.s.cm-5.m2 (P less than 0.05), respectively. The pulmonary shunt fraction increased from 0.23 +/- 0.03 t...

Research paper thumbnail of Integrated photonic devices for fiber optic communication systems

The 15th Annual Meeting of the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society

Fabrication and epitaxial growth technology for III-V semiconductor devices have developed to the... more Fabrication and epitaxial growth technology for III-V semiconductor devices have developed to the point where substantial levels of photonic integration are now feasible. Both highly complex and simple photonic integrated devices are currently the subjects of much active research and product development. These efforts are motivated by the many potential advantages of photonic integration, reduced size, lower power consumption, increased functionality, higher performance and above all else lower cost. We discuss two different examples of photonic integrated devices that demonstrate some of the significant performance advantages that can be achieved with this technology. Both devices are fabricated using our deep ridge buried heterostructure technology that combines both SAG and butt joint epitaxial techniques to obtain the maximum flexibility in the device design. The first device is a high-speed modulator with an integrated phase shifter that enables the transmitter chirp to be dynamically tuned. This enables the transmission performance to be optimized for different amounts of fiber dispersion. In this device the phase shifter can be driven either with a synchronous sinusoidal source or a complementary data modulation. By varying either the amplitude of the drive signal or the bias on the phase modulator the chirp of the transmitted optical pulses can be controlled. For synchronous sinusoidal or narrowband chirp control a single frequency drive signal synchronized with the data modulation is applied to the phase modulator. This signal can be used to apply either positive or negative chirp to the transmitted data bits by varying the phase and amplitude of the drive signal. A more sophisticated approach uses the complement of the data modulation signal to drive the phase modulator. This method referred to as broadband chirp control provides better compensation since it applies frequency chirp only to the transitions in the signal.

This study was performed to assess the potential benefits of TxA2 synthetase inhibition and TxA2 receptor blockade in sepsis after severe thermal injury. Pigs with left atrial, aortic, and pulmonary artery catheters received a 40 percent third-degree burn and, 24 hours later, 100 micrograms per kg Escherichia coli endotoxin. The antagonist treatment (BM) group was treated with the TxA2 receptor antagonist BM 13.177, the synthetase treatment (OKY) group with the TxA2 synthetase inhibitor OKY-046, and the control group received saline solution placebo. Another group without burn or endotoxin was used to assess the side effects of BM 13.177. Both drugs significantly attenuated the changes in pulmonary vascular resistance index, cardiac index, arterial PO2, shunt, oxygen delivery, and oxygen consumption seen after endotoxin. However, cardiac index was significantly decreased in group BM before end...
