The survey was constructed based on leadership interpersonal competencies and competency-based career development programs. The goal of the study was to determine the perceptions that senior executives have about the interpersonal skills of recent entrants. A total of 676 respondents returned the survey, representing 31 percent of the mailing sample. In a follow-up study to 368 matriculating graduate students to determine their knowledge gaps in the transformation, execution, and people domains of the NCHL competency model, it was determined that the “people competency” received minimal attention in comparison to competencies in the transformation and execution domains. Graduate students did not recognize that their interpersonal skills needed enhancement. The conclusion is that im...

While transformational leadership may be the long-term goal, this chapter explains how the process of other traditional leadership theories can help assess and build upon its effectiveness. In this regard, this chapter argues that transformational leadership can be conceptually understood through five other supporting leadership theories, namely behavioral, psychodynamic, situational, path-goal, and leader-member exchange. Thus, there are essential characteristics from traditional leadership theories and others that can help aspiring transformational first-time leaders. Through lifelong learning and development of these leadership approaches, culminating characteristics for aspiring transformational first-time leaders must include not only motivation and morality, but also care and concern for others.

The Pew Research Center reports that place-based learning remains vital for pursuing knowledge especially from digital technology. This means that although learning occurs in traditional places (home, work, or community), the use of technology further enhances learner engagement across the entire society. As such, learning cities is a placed-based initiative for implementing education and lifelong learning. Smart cities, similarly, expand the implementation of education and lifelong learning, but through a broader medium of digital technology and the internet. The important connection between lifelong learning (as learning cities) and technology (as smart cities) is the aim for providing access to every individual in society. This chapter offers an analysis of two concepts representing these two cities' initiatives.

Students make the investment to enhance their career opportunities, to engage in lifelong learning, and to build professional networks. The Commission on Accreditation of Health Management Education advises graduate programs to adopt a competency model that serves as the basis of curriculum, course content, learning objectives, and teaching and assessment methods. One such competency model is the National Center for Healthcare Leadership with its original 26 competencies in the domains of transformation, execution, and people. The authors found the case competition experience advanced student learning the most and provided the opportunity for the student to enhance their skills in 15-competency areas. The case competition experience enhanced the confidence, professionalism, and team leadership skills that prospective employers found attractive for recruitment. Academic institutions invest resources in providing students with experiential learning activities through guest lectures, site visits, internships, and a host of other events to introduce the student to employment and networking opportunities. In examining the host of activities to which students participate, the authors find the case competition experience the one that provides the best and intensive introduction to competencies.

In response to the Handbook's call for “technological workforce tools” for lifelong learning, this chapter shifts toward philosophical perspectives serving as the “lifelong tools” of learning and education for considering society in communal ways. These lifelong tools may repair old thoughts or private matters of learned, education, and employment for new collaborative ideas and spirits, breathing life into all areas of learning, educating, and working. This chapter compares lifelong learning with other terms such as lifelong education and community education, and concludes that the emergence of learning cities and regions could be the twenty-first century testing ground for practicing lifelong learning.

Such reciprocal collaboration (two-way interaction from academics to practice and from practice to academics) has started to take place at the Chicago Park District(CPD) by bringing in academic professionals to implement practitioners' professional development and system-wide program evaluation. This article describes the collaborative experience occurring at the city park level and introduces added ways to “bridge the divide” between practitioners and academic professionals. We believe that a city, dedicated to learning together, can bring about promising outcomes, especially by implementing adult learning principles and practices; and by implanting academic professionals to work alongside practitioners in a long-term effort for improving the parks, recreation, and ...
