This has caused its threat to extinction and in addition, its bio-ecological aspects are poorly known. Thus, the main objective of this study was to analyze the seasonal variations of population length structure and feeding habits of the sea stars A. marginatus inhabiting off state of Paraná, Southern Brazil. The analyzed specimens were collected in February (summer), April (fall), June (winter) and October (spring) of 2008 from shrimp by-catch trawling. In the laboratory, each individual had its length measured and then weighed on an analytical scale. Afterwards, the stomach contents of 10 individuals of each of two most frequent length classes were seasonally analyzed. The relative frequency and abundance for each prey category was determined and, then combined into an index of alimentary importance. A...

Research paper thumbnail of Effects of t he Burrowing Crab Chasmagnathus granulata (Dana) on Meiofauna o f Estuarine Intertidal Habitats of Patos Lagoon, Southern Brazil

Braz Arch Biol Technol, 2005

Meiofauna community was dominated by nematodes and ostracods, following by copepods and turbellarians. Densities of all studied organisms varied significantly among habitats. Highest values were observed in submerged mudflat while lower in salt marsh. Nematodes were unaffected by crab in either habitat, whereas ostracod, copepod and turbellarian densities were significantly lower in disturbed than control areas in both mudflat habitats. Any meiofaunal group was affected in salt marsh, probably due to a less intense disturbance. The results showed that the burrowing crab C. granulata could play an important role on meiofauna community structure in estuarine intertidal habitats of Patos Lagoon, because crab disturbance seemed to affect mainly surface populations, especially in mudflat. However, the meiofauna response to crab disturbance was variable among habitats depending of the intensity and the frequency of the disturbance.

Monthly samplings were carried out from July 2008 through August 2009. Higher abundances were registered along warmer months (October to January) and were negatively related to water salinity. This population was dominated by females, which were larger and heavier than males. Ovigerous females were caught from September through March, with higher incidence in December. Fecundity ranged from 27 to 393 eggs (mean: 217 ± 74 eggs female-1) and has better correlation with weight than female length. The observed characteristics for P. pandaliformis inhabiting this saltmarsh such as seasonal patterns in both abundance and reproductive period are consistent with those expected by subtropical and temperate populations. However, the sampling method effects need to be evaluated.

This study examines the spatial distribution of the ghost crabs, Ocypode quadrata Fabricius, 1787, inthirteen estuarine sandy beaches located along two main axes of the Paranagua Bay Estuarine Complex, south-ern Brazil. Burrow densities of ghost crabs were measured at three beach levels established around the high tidemark during the summer and winter of 2005. All beaches showed a steep beach face slope (2.6 to 8.3°) withsediment composition varying from well sorted fine sand to very poorly sorted coarse sand towards the upperestuary. Water salinity ranged from around 31 at those beaches near the bay inlet, to 14 at beaches in the innerestuary. The burrow densities of O. quadrata in the estuarine beaches were similar to those observed in theoceanic beaches. However, the absence of burrows at the four innermost beaches suggests that low salinity andsediment penetrability may prevent ghost crabs from occurring in this region of the estuary. Burrow densitiesshowed strong seas...

Fishes were caught with rod and reel in competitive fishing events promoted in 2014-2015 along the coast of Sergipe. A total of 174 pairs of sagitta otoliths of P. virginicus, 181 of M. cuiaranensis and 77 of C. nobilis was extracted. In general, the sagitta otoliths of all three species analyzed here presented different morphology and shape indices. The permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) demonstrated significant differences among species and ontogenetic phases within each species using morphometry and shape indices. The linear discriminant analysis (LDA) presented a 98.3% correct reclassification of the otoliths by species.

This study aimed at assessing the population structure of H. pudibundus, analyzing its sex ratio, length distribution, size at first morphological maturity and biometric relationships, and identifying latitudinal patterns. Four samples of 6 kg (shrimps plus by-catch) were monthly collected in March/2015-May/2016 in Pirambu, Sergipe. Carapace width (CW) and length (LC), and total weight (TW, g) were measured. Sex and stage of morphological maturity were defined. A total of 240 individuals was collected from all samples and the sex ratio did not differ from 1:1. This was observed in low latitudes, but females dominated in higher latitudes. The carapace width was 20.8-60.1 mm for females and 19.1-60.8 mm CW for males. Larger sizes were observed in higher latitudes. The estimated carapace widthlength relationships for females and males were not significantly different (CL=0.6764+0.7390•CW; sex grouped). The estimated weight-length

Four samples were collected monthly from shrimp trawlers based in the municipality of Pirambu from March 2015 to May 2016. Carapace length (CL), total length (TC), live weight (LW), sex and maturity stages were obtained for each specimen. A total of 13,035 individuals were analysed with an overall sex ratio of 1:1. However, this ratio favoured females in larger sizes, which reflects a reproductive strategy, as their larger size allows for larger gonads, higher fertility and production of more eggs. An inflexion point was observed in the relationship between total and carapace length, probably related to reproduction, as this occurred after first maturity. A reproduction peak was observed in August–September, which does not correspond to the closed season. The parameters estimated for a seasonally oscillating version of the von Bertalanffy growth function were CL∞ = 33 mm and K = ...
