We used the case-control study design with a sample consisting of 14 Brazilian adult patients (mean age 55.8; SD = 12.5), of both genders, with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke in the LH and 16 healthy adults (mean age 56; SD = 10.9). All participants underwent neuropsycholinguistic evaluation. Statistically significant differences were found between the clinical group and the control group in the functions of attention, working memory, verbal episodic-semantic memory, constructive praxis, executive functions and expressive language skills. We concluded that the linguistic and nonlinguistic cognitive skills and sociodemographic characteristics of the aphasic patients should be analyzed in detail to facilitate the development of more effective rehabilitation programs for aphasia.

However, few studies in the area of Physical Therapy and Motor Behavior consider the educational status of the subjects. This study aimed to describe evidences about the influence of the educational status on motor behavior (and its repercussions on physiotherapeutic assessment) and on motor learning (and its repercussions on physiotherapeutic treatment). We included in this review national and international studies from 1998 to 2013 from SciELO, MEDLINE and LILACS databases. We used the keywords: educational status, schooling level, motor control, motor behavior, motor performance, and motor learning. Sixty studies were located and 28 were selected, because they followed the inclusion criteria: (1) to investigate the effect of education on motor performance; (2) be available in Portuguese or English; and (3) be available in Brazil. The review showed that the educational status of patients must be considered by the physiotherapists in experimental and clinical practice, because many studies have shown its influence on assessment and treatment of young and older adults.

Methods: Clinical data for this study were obtained by reviewing the records provided by the subjects' neurologists. Genetic analysis was carried out on DNA extracted from postmortem brain tissue. We present a novel family in which five of eight siblings had dementia. Results: Variable amounts of clinical information is available on three of the affected siblings (1 male, the proband, and 2 females) who had onset of dementia at ages 44y, 58y, and 60y, respectively. Their father had dementia in his 40s and died in his 50s. The proband presented with deficits of recent memory and inability to follow complex instructions, which appeared to have led to the loss of several jobs. At the age of 49, the proband underwent a brain MRI and EEG, which showed mild atrophy and diffuse background rhythm slowing, respectively. Memory deficits became more severe and he became progressively apathetic, confused, and impulsive. His sleep pattern changed and he presented with paranoia. He died at age 63y. The proband's elder sister presented with dementia at age 60y. She died at age 68y. The proband's younger sister sustained a head trauma when falling down a flight of stairs at the age of 55y. Subsequent to that event, she experienced intermittent headaches, memory loss, and attention and visuo-spacial deficits. She died at age 67y. Genetic analyses on all three siblings revealed a single nucleotide (T to G) substitution in codon 105 of PSEN1 resulting in a leucine for phenalanine amino acid change (F105L). Analysis of the Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene revealed e3/3, 32/3 and 32/3, respectively. Neuropathologically, all three met the NIA-Reagan criteria for high likelihood AD. Conclusions: We describe a new family in which some members are affected with early-onset AD associated with the F105L PSEN1 mutation. Remarkably, two subjects that carry an ApoE 32 allele developed the disease at a more advanced age than the proband that did not have that allele. Whether this represents a protective role of ApoE 32 allele is unknown.

Objectives: To evaluate the influence of age, gender and educational level on the performance in tests related to memory of drawings of the BCB-Edu in healthy subjects. Methods: Participants were adult volunteers; exclusion criteria were illiteracy, neurologic or psychiatric disorders, visual or hearing impairment, untreated chronic clinical conditions, alcoholism, use of drugs, and for those aged 65 or over, an informant report of cognitive or functional impairment. We evaluated 325 individuals (207 women), with a mean age of 47.1 (±16.8) years, ranging from 19 to 81, and a mean of 9.8 (±5.0) schooling-years. Univariate analyses, correlations and logistic regression were employed (α=0.05). Results: There were significant negative correlations between age and the scores in four of the seven tests. However, schooling-years were positively correlated to the scores, where schooling-years decreased with age in this sample (rho= -0.323; p<0.001). Logistic regression confirmed that gender influenced the learning of drawings, where women performed better, while age influenced incidental memory, immediate memory, learning and delayed recall of the drawings, and schooling-years influenced visual identification, immediate memory, learning, delayed recall and recognition of the drawings. Conclusion: Gender, age and education influence the performance on the memory of drawings of the BCB-Edu, although the extent of these influences differs according to the nature of the test.

The slow and progressive deterioration of language occurring in these cases provides an interesting model to better understand the mechanisms involved in the linguistic process. We describe clinical and neuroimaging aspects found in 16 cases of PPA. Our patients underwent language and neuropsychological evaluation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT). We observed a clear distinction in oral expression patterns; patients were classified as fluent and nonfluent. Anomia was the earliest and most evident symptom in both groups. Neuroimaging pointed to SPECT as a valuable instrument in guiding the differential diagnosis, as well as in making useful clinical and anatomical correlations. This report and a comparison to literature are an attempt to contribute to a better understanding of PPA.

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative clinical syndrome characterized primaril... more Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative clinical syndrome characterized primarily by progressive language impairment. Recently, consensus diagnostic criteria were published for the diagnosis and classification of variants of PPA. The currently recognized variants are nonfluent/agrammatic (PPA-G), logopenic (PPA-L) and semantic (PPA-S). Objective: To analyze the demographic data and the clinical classification of 100 PPA cases. Methods: Data from 100 PPA patients who were consecutively evaluated between 1999 and 2012 were analyzed. The patients underwent neurological, cognitive and language evaluation. The cases were classified according to the proposed variants, using predominantly the guidelines proposed in the consensus diagnostic criteria from 2011. Results: The sample consisted of 57 women and 43 men, aged at onset 67.2±8.1 years (range of between 53 and 83 years). Thirty-five patients presented PPA-S, 29 PPA-G and 16 PPA-L. It was not possible to classify 20% of the cases into any one of the proposed variants. Conclusion: It was possible to classify 80% of the sample into one of the three PPA variants proposed. Perhaps the consensus classification requires some adjustments to accommodate cases that do not fit into any of the variants and to avoid overlap where cases fit more than one variant. Nonetheless, the established current guidelines are a useful tool to address the classification and diagnosis of PPA and are also of great value in standardizing terminologies to improve consistency across studies from different research centers.

A Danish family with FTD-3 has been followed by a multinational and multidisciplinary research group (Frontotemporal dementia Research in Jutland Association, FReJA) for more than two decades. The clinical phenotype of FTD-3 has been described with early changes in behavior and personality typical of the behavioral variant of FTD. The impression is however, that FTD-3 patients often are more globally affected than most other FTD cases [l]. Neuropsychological data on FTD-3 in the early stage has only been presented in a case report in 2002 [1] and as preliminary data in a cross-sectional study including haplotyped family members [2]. While the case study showed generalized cognitive impairment with relatively preserved episodic memory, the study of preclinical symptoms indicated predominantly frontal lobe involvement years before overt dementia symptoms. The objective of this study is to characterize neuropsychological changes in the preclinical phase of FTD-3. Methods: As part of a cross-sectional and longitudinal study, 37 FTD-3 family members aged 40 -70 were assessed with neuropsychological tests in 2002, 2005 and 2010. Five subjects showed clinical signs of dementia at the last session. In order to assess the earliest neuropsychological dysfunctions in FTD-3, data from 2002 and 2005 from these five subjects are being analysed. Results:
