The studied samples are made with a Fe-doped LiNbO 3 substrate showing the bulk photovoltaic effect and an ITO coated glass plate as covering substrate. Umbilics are created upon exposure with a focused laser beam: They are induced via photo generated fields at the relocatable exposure beam position. The field distribution of these fields is normal to the sample plane at the exposure spot center and has increasingly high in-plane field components in radial direction: Ideal conditions to induce director reorientations with radial symmetry in a LC with positive dielectric anisotropy. The irradiated regions are studied with polarized probe light revealing the characteristic for umbilic defects and the typical doughnut-shaped intensity distributions expected for optical vortex beams. The experimental findings are compared to calculated transmission profiles. Moreover, a LC with negative dielectric anisotropy was studied in the same type of sample for reference.

While the coupling of the optical field to the nematic director is at the base of a wealth of thoroughly described optical effects, a significant variety of geometries and materials have not been considered yet. Here we show that by adopting a simple cell geometry and measuring the optically induced birefringence, we can readily extract the twist elastic coefficient K22 of thermotropic and lyotropic chiral nematics (N*). The value of K22 we obtain for chiral doped 5CB thermotropic N* well matches those reported in the literature. With this same strategy, we could determine for the first time K22 of the N* phase of concentrated aqueous solutions of DNA oligomers, bypassing the limitations that so far prevented measuring the elastic constants of this class of liquid crystalline materials. The p...

By recording the sample response by applying dc or ac voltage, it is shown that in the latter case no permanent anchoring is possible. It is also demonstrated the limited role of photo-isomerization that gives a contribution to the nonlinear reorientation process only in the high dose regime. The effects on light-induced tuning of the Freedericksz transition are also reported.

The rings formation is controlled by an external dc field applied perpendicular to the cell substrates.

We show that in case of dc field the threshold voltage can decrease or increase depending on the light dose, due to the light-induced desorption and adsorption of charge complexes from and on the irradiated surface, that has been recently demonstrated. This effect has the potential to be exploited in optical devices such as liquid crystal microlenses and spatial light modulators.

We show results driving to this direction supported by a model for the LC molecules realignment induced by a focused beam.

The bulk reorientation due to the collective elastic behavior of the liquid crystal is the origin of the nonlinearity, which occurs without a direct optical torque on the molecular director in the bulk, We call this effect SINE

Novel features arise under these conditions: no threshold effect; reduced reorientation if compared the one induced by a paraxial Gaussian beam,

Special attention has been devoted to the study of the effects of curing parameters on film morphology, which were analysed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). UV intensity

We have previously performed a systematic study on UV curable mixtures in order to obtain a correlation between the characteristics of the UV irradiation i.e. intensity and exposure time, and the optical properties of PDLC samples. Here we report the results of a detailed investigation performed by using the UV lines of an Ar ion laser as light source to cure the standard mixture NOA65-E7. We observe that, due to the high intensity in a narrow wavelength region (333–363 nm), fast curing can be obtained leading to peculiar morphologies. We also demonstrate how is possible to exploit the laser curing technique to write switchable images in these materials.
