Research paper thumbnail of Heavy Metal Contamination of Harbor Bottom Sediments

Sediment parameters such as the percentages of particles and the concentrations of organic carbon and heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cr, Cd, and Hg) were determined. The heavy metal contamination of harbor sediments was established by calculating Nemerov's pollution index applied to soil. The spatial structure of the obtained data and the factors responsible for sediment distribution and contamination patterns were analyzed in order to evaluate the changes that have occurred since 1998 in the sedimentation conditions, the level of heavy metal contamination, and the structure of the contaminants.

Areas of highest geochemical anomalies where Me / Al values exceed the calculated background values 1.1 times were distinguished in the zones of marine sand, alluvium and thindispersed material of sedimentation by the method of aluminium normalization. The highest load of all metals, except Cd, falls on the area of the branch to the Eastern basin in the zone of alluvial sedimentation and the sedimentation zone of thindispersed material in the Eastern basin.

The concentrations of heavy metals and organic carbon same as the percentages of 6 granular fractions were determined at 41 stations. The contamination level was established by calculating the Nemerov's pollution index. The major factors responsible for sediment contamination with heavy metals and distribution patterns of discrete pollutants and different pollution areas were determined. By comparison of the obtained results with the results of 1998, the changes of sediment contamination with heavy metals in the last ten years were evaluated. It was determined that bottom sediments not contaminated with heavy metals are dominant in the semi-closed bays of Klaipėda port. Heavy contamination with nickel, and moderate contamination with zinc and copper only occur in small areas.

It is determined that concentration of pollutants depends mainly on the granular and material composition of bottom sediments, the distance from the sources of pollution and sedimentation patterns in the barrier zone fresh–saline water. The greatest area (33.2%) of bottom sediments in the Šventoji Port 7.75 ha basin is polluted with hydrocarbons. The most highly polluted is the sand in the Šventoji River sector in front of its mouth (0.047 ha) where the maximal permissible concentration (MPC) value for sand is exceeded by 21.3 times. Certain areas of surface bottom sediments in the Šventoji Port basin are polluted with heavy metals Pb (0.054 ha), Ni (0.19 ha), Cu (0.19 ha) and Zn. (0.36 ha).
