Research paper thumbnail of The role of legitimacy in pursuing environmentally responsible transportation practices

Journal of Cleaner Production, Dec 1, 2016

The purpose of this research is to specifically explore the legitimacy-related motivations for utilizing a voluntary environmental partnership (VEP) to improve environmentally responsible freight transportation practices (ERTP). This research develops propositions through case studies of U.S. shippers and carriers in an effort to better understand motivations for and perceived benefits from pursuing these practices through joining or not joining the SmartWay transportation VEP. The findings indicate that pragmatic and moral legitimacy are the primary legitimacy drivers of joining a VEP and implementing these practices. The benefits associated with membership in a transportation VEP are viewed positively overall, though more so by shippers than by carriers. Whether the company joined the VEP entirely of its own volition, as in the case of most shippers studied, or under perceived pressure from a customer impacts the perceived outcomes of VEP membership. The findings further suggest that membership in a transportation VEP can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce costs, which could encourage and expand these practices toward a cleaner environment.

The focus is on customer service factors, the use of a supply chain management approach in retailing channels, and the impact of information technology on retail logistics today and in the future. Information technologies discussed include electronic data interchange, point of sale and barcoding. The article concludes that based on the importance that retailers attach to customer service, supply chain management and information technology, the 1990s will likely be an exciting and challenging time in the management of the retail logistics function.

Research paper thumbnail of Let the buyer beware: how network structure can enable (and prevent) supply chain fraud

International Journal of Operations & Production Management, Dec 31, 2021

E... more PurposeSupply chain fraud is a significant global concern for firms, consumers and governments. Evidence of major fraud events suggests the role of supply chain structures in enabling and facilitating fraud, as they often involve several parties in complicated networks designed to obfuscate the fraud. This paper identifies how the structural characteristics of supply chains can play an important role in enabling, facilitating and preventing fraud.Design/methodology/approachThe research follows a theory elaboration approach. The authors build on structural holes theory in conjunction with a multiple case study research design to identify new concepts and develop propositions regarding the role of network structure on supply chain fraud.FindingsThis research shows how structural holes in a supply chain can create advantages for unscrupulous firms, a role we call tertius fraudans, or the cheating third. This situation is exacerbated by structural ignorance, which refers to the lack of knowledge about structural connections in the network. Both structural holes and structural ignorance can create information gaps that facilitate fraud, and the authors propose solutions to detect and prevent this kind of fraud.Originality/valueThis paper extends structural holes theory into the domain of fraud. Novel concepts including tertius fraudans, structural ignorance and bridge collapse are offered, alongside a series of propositions that can help understand and manage structural supply chain fraud.

Research paper thumbnail of Moving purchasing & supply management beyond a cost-focused identity

Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management, Jun 1, 2021

Abstract Practitioners and researchers recognize that purchasing and supply management (PSM) cont... more Abstract Practitioners and researchers recognize that purchasing and supply management (PSM) contributes value to business performance beyond reported cost reductions, though capturing and evaluating such contributions is often challenging. The goal of this research is to understand roadblocks impeding the recognition of PSM’s contributions beyond cost reduction, and suggest potential solutions to these challenges. Social identity theory offers a conceptual framework to study PSM’s self-identity and how it is perceived by others in the organization. Gaining acceptance for value-added metrics is critical to move perceptions of PSM’s contribution beyond cost reduction and achieve its full potential. Social identity theory is used as a lens to assess the data and develop propositions. Using a qualitative interview method, the researchers identified important roadblocks hindering PSM’s attainment of a broader value-based perception. PSM’s identity is closely linked to cost-savings by itself, other functions and upper management. These perceptions are further reinforced by PSM through excessive cost reporting metrics. We provide two suggested solutions for PSM to expand its recognition beyond cost savings: 1) PSM must change its narrative and associated self-identity; and 2) PSM needs to develop metrics that are meaningful across multiple areas of the business.

Research paper thumbnail of Supply chain management in industrial marketing–Relationships matter

Part of this evolution has been the inclusion of research in supply chain management, which is the focus of this paper. The purpose of this paper is to assess themes across the classic articles in supply chain management (SCM) published in IMM, and explore how the field of SCM has evolved since their publication. A systematic literature review was used to assess SCM research in IMM, identify themes and publication patterns, and use these themes to assess gaps in extant research and opportunities for future research. Results of the literature review show that over 58% of the SCM research published in IMM has focused on buyer-supplier relationships and other purchasing and supply management topics. These will continue to be key topics in IMM. In addition, our literature review suggests opportunities for more SCM research in IMM around sustainability, logistics, and manufacturing innovation. These areas within the SCM umbrella are under-researched, yet yield significant opportunities for future research in a time of constant change within companies' distribution models. 2. History and literature reviews Examining the landscape of research in areas related to the domain of supply chain management-specifically the areas of operations, purchasing and supply management (PSM), logistics, and supply chain management-much has changed since IMM's inception in 1971. The term supply chain management first appeared in scholarly literature in

Because of RL’s growing strategic importance, it is imperative to conduct a timely and comprehensive literature review and to identify associated opportunities for future research. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the researchers conduct an extensive bibliometric analysis of published academic articles on RL for the period of 1992-2015. Specifically, the CiteSpace software is utilized to conduct document co-citation analysis and burst detection analysis on 912 selected RL articles and their 22,642 references. Findings This research identifies the most influential RL research publications/citations in each of the five periods and their research contribution. Using co-citation analysis, the authors are able to identify and illustrate major research themes, knowledge groups, ...

This paper presents issues associated with using secondary data as a principal source of data or as supplemental to other data or methods. As editors increasingly call for multiple data sources in research publications, secondary data become even more relevant. Secondary data have many benefits, and some secondary data sets are well established and highly credible. The authors describe some of the ways that secondary data has been used in purchasing and supply management research, as well as some of the sources of data. Secondary data does have its limitations, ranging from bias in collection and reporting to difficulty in identifying and accessing appropriate sources of secondary data to dealing with its predominantly unstructured nature. Suggestions for improving the reliability and validity of secondary data are provided, as well advice for dealing with big data.
