We can say that the very category of place has acquired the status of a universal cognitive (ontognoseological) metaphor, widely used in a variety of contexts. Nakamura, like many other modern Japanese philosophers, uses the concept of place as a frame that allows us to view reality as a dynamic network of multi-level connections and interactions. The works of the Tokyo philosopher Nakamura Yujiro, whose scientific activity took place in the last third of the 20th – early 21st centuries, is a vivid example of the further development of the theory of place at the modern level, confirming its heuristic possibilities. The article is devoted to the analysis of Nakamura’s views in his books Topos Theory, Common Sense Theory and Predicative World and Systems, which demonstrate the e...

The author identifies the most significant and widely debated problems during the given period, observes its principal directions and the most prominent works. The following topics are in the center of consideration: modern vision of philosophy as a science, peculiarity of understanding the phenomenon of life, undertaken within the framework of two interconnected integral approaches, defined as “philosophy of life” (seimei tetsugaku) and “philosophy of coexistence” (kyosei tetsugaku), as well as the latest achievements and vectors of expansion in line with the main philosophical areas – phenomenology, analytical philosophy, traditions of the Kyoto school, and Marxism. This is the first attempt to provide general analysis of the latest Japanese philosophical works published after 2000. The interest in Japanese philosophy is dictated both by the existence of a rich philosophical tradition in this country, by the high level of modern philosophical works, that are beginning to be actively translated into Western languages and are increasingly attracting the attention of scholars over the world, as well as by the situation of social demand for philosophical literature in the domestic market, additional incentives to steer its development. The aim of the study is to reconstruct a more complete picture of modern philosophical thought, which is marked by lacunae due to the limited availability of a significant body of research published in national languages. Its practical importance lies in the accumulation of an information and creation of an analytical base, allowing to provide orientations for the expansion of scientific cooperation with modern Japanese philosophers. The bibliography covers the most important vectors and significant personalities.

The Japanese philosopher is also notable for a number of other intellectual insights. For depicting a holistic image on the philosophical views of Shūzō Kuki, a more extensive array of his works is introduced into the scientific discourse. A significant part of these work have not been translated into the Russian or other foreign languages. This article explores the problems of time and space, which are cross-cutting in the works of Shūzō Kuki using examples of such philosophical writings as the “Theory of Time”, “What is Anthropology?”, “Problems of Time. This rethinking manifested itself in Tanabe’s appeal to national spiritual tradition, a religious philosophy combining separate Buddhist doctrines, in particular the teachings of Shinran and the Jodo school. The exampl...

At the same time, in a changing world, it is important to take into account the ideas about time and history that have arisen in various cultural and civilizational areas. The article analyzes the attempt of a Japanese philosopher Nishitani Keiji belonging to the Kyoto school to formulate a modern concept of history based on the Buddhist view of the world and time. Unlike other religious and philosophical traditions, Buddhist thought practically did not touch upon topics related to history. Using Nishitani's philosophy as an example, the author tries to demonstrate the specifics of the modern Buddhist approach to understanding time and history and to determine its heuristic potential. Due to the fact that today the narrative view of history prevails, introducing a value component into the under...

Due to this trend, a more complete panoramic view of the development of world philosophy as a whole is accessible, and it has become possible to understand that any constructions of the human mind that have arisen in a particular cultural field of experience cannot be regarded as exemplary and absolute. The researchers of Asian philosophies concentrate mostly on studying the texts of individual thinkers. As a rule, they do not set themselves the task of examining these texts from the point of view of intercultural interactions and transformations of significant ideas and concepts in various cultural and historical contexts, defining the direction and mechanisms of cultural borrowing, as well as revealing new approaches and growth points. To achieve these goals, the research should focus at the problem of the self-determination and development of ph...

Released in the form of journal publications in 1970–1972, it has never been translated into European languages. The Japanese philosopher who spent a large part of his life in France undertakes a comparative analysis of the socio-cultural and linguistic foundations of the experience of the Japanese and Europeans. The article examines the main aspects of Mori’s concept of experience: understanding experience as a reality and as a subject, separation of two forms of experience — universal and personal, the relationship between experience and language and between experience and thought, the theory of binary connections and second person world, designed to identify and explain the underlying prerequisites that determine the specific character of the experience of the Japanese. The author of the article shows that Mori confirms his own thesis that the primary experience of a person ...

The study of philosophical teachings through the prism of intercultural philosophical dialogue p... more The study of philosophical teachings through the prism of intercultural philosophical dialogue provides an opportunity for a broader view of the history of philosophy overcoming the framework of the East-West dichotomy the limitations of which are becoming more and more obvious over time. This article is a further step in this direction. It demonstrates what aspects of Hegel’s thought were taken by Japanese thinkers of Kyoto School and how they were developed in new philosophical and cultural context. In particular, such moments as the concepts of the unity of logic and metaphysics, logic and the historical process, the scheme of correlation of the absolute and the world, the principles of negation, double negation, contradiction, the dialectic of identity and difference, direct and mediation, individual, special and universal, became the object of consideration. The author makes an attempt to reveal the mechanisms of perception and adaptation of elements of a seemingly completely alien religious and cultural tradition. She offers her vision of character and degree of Hegel’s influence upon Nishida Kitaro and Tanabe Hajime, arguing that the points in the teachings of the German philosopher relevant to the key doctrines of Mahayana Buddhism were most attractive to them. The article concludes that Japanese thinkers, not being followers of Hegel, nevertheless made extensive use of his conceptual tools, approaches, and logical constructions to express their own ideas. Equally important is the fact that the appeal of Japanese philosophers to Hegel allowed them to more clearly define their own position regarding the central idea of their philosophy.

Nevertheless, when referring to this or that specifi c cultural material, the problem of the existence of separate epistemic cultures arises. Contemporary research on epistemological diversity relies primarily on methods of analytic epistemology and focuses on identifying examples of ‘cross-linguistic divergence’ at the semantic level. The concepts of ‘know’ and ‘knowledge’ often become the object of research. However, there are suffi cient grounds for identifying and studying epistemic cultures also in terms of other parameters. This article is focused upon highlighting these parameters by referring to examples of the history of the Japanese spiritual tradition associated with Buddhist and Confucian teachings. In particular, the author examines the Buddhist doctrines of two truths and the identity of absolute being and the phenomenal world, as wel...

At the same time, he belongs to those outstanding Japanese thinkers of the first half of the twentieth century, who not only introduced to their compatriots the history of Western philosophy, but also acted as generators of original concepts created on the basis of deep critical understanding of the Western intellectual heritage. The article deals with the reconstruction of Seiichi Hatano’s theory of time, formulated in his monograph “Time and Eternity” (1943), which crowned his creative career. The starting point of Hatano’s philosophy of time were studies of the basic human experience, which he interpreted in terms of the flow of life and the interaction of the Self and the Other. The subject of the Japanese thinker’s special interest was the problem of overcoming temporality. Hatano’s original contribution to the theory of time was the creation of the three-fold scheme of temporality, considered...

The solution to this problem is relevant in regards to Russia building a constructive policy in relation to Japan.
