The Brazilian League for the Allies set up at 1915, led by prominent personalities of national intellectual scene, as José Veríssimo, Graça Aranha and Rui Barbosa. They acted during the war as an important centre of Allies propaganda in Brazil. They published many papers on Rio de Janeiro's press and promoted charitable events at federal capital. However, the association intended to promote not only the Allies cause, but a national identity for Brazil. Their ideas about this subject became evident when they started to put down the Germany immigrants in Brazil and their descendants, along the German Empire. The League suspected that these people were trying to dominate part of the Brazilian territory and ruled on its own. On the basis of this fear and the definition about the " other " , which wasn't belonging to the national community, the Brazilian League for the Allies defended what they believed as a definition about the national identity, what was the meaning of being Brazilian on the first decades of the XX century.

The association was organized by José Veríssimo, Graça Aranha, Eliseu Montarroyos and Araújo Gonçalves. They intended to promote the Entente campaign on the First Word War, and they waged fundraiser events and public conferences with this goal. Their leading way to promote their causes was their bulletins published on carioca newspapers, inspired by the ally propaganda. Feared by the young writers and respected by the elders, his opinions were well received among the lettered. However, literature was not the only subject which kept Veríssimo attentions: he had also written about politics and cultural. As so, the versatile intellectual followed with attention and interest the events in Europe, in 1914. The current paper will analyse José Veríssimo essays about the First World War, and will try to understand the impact of the war among Brazilians.

As he said at the occasion, he intended to ‘study the dramatic historical situation from a truly Brazilian perspective, trying to build up knowledges for the critical economic situation of our Motherland and, more, for her political role at the continent.’ The ‘dramatic historical situation’ was the First World War, which had started. From that moment, the Great War had been on Brazilian press, and started an impassioned discussion among famous and ordinary people. Dunshee de Abranches became notorious as pro-German intellectual, and had gained criticism and applauses at the same time. This essay will analyse Abranche’s writing about the First World War and its parallelism with other pro-German texts. Therefore, it will understand the different interpretations and understands about the war in Brazil, until now neglected by the Brazilian historiography.
