Research paper thumbnail of Synthesis of novel 2-(fluoroanilino)-3-(2,4-dinitroanilino) derivatives of 1,4-naphthoquinone

First, 2-chloro-3-(2,4-dinitroanilino)-1,4-naphthoquinone was prepared in two steps beginning with the reaction of 2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone with aniline in the presence of a Lewis acid (CeCl 3 Á7H 2 O). The resulting 2-(anilino)-1,4-naphthoquinone was then nitrated. The strong electron withdrawing effect of the 2,4-dinitroanilino substituent on the naphthoquinone framework facilitated the displacement of the second chlorine atom by a variety of weakly nucleophilic fluoro-substituted anilines under reflux conditions. Research paper thumbnail of A Bentonitic Clay Assisted Method for the Preparation of 2-(R-Anilino)-1, 4-Naphthoquinones

Topics in Catalysis, 2008

A new and efficient protocol to prepare 2-(R-anilino)-1,4-naphthoquinones in quantitative yields ... more A new and efficient protocol to prepare 2-(R-anilino)-1,4-naphthoquinones in quantitative yields is presented. This synthesis occurs under mild conditions by reacting the corresponding aniline and 1,4-naphthoquinone in the presence of a bentonitic clay. The role of the clay is explained in terms of a reaction mechanism in which an activated complex is formed by the reaction of 1,4-naphthoquinone with Lewis acid sites of the clay. Based on the chemical composition of the clay, with Fe 3+ sites, the last step of the mechanism is proposed to involve an oxidationreduction reaction.
