An attentive visitor to the Vienna Kriegsmuseum can pause among the battle flags and the statues ... more An attentive visitor to the Vienna Kriegsmuseum can pause among the battle flags and the statues of half-forgotten field marshals and find a handful of paintings and relics of those soldiers and sailors of the Habsburg monarchy whose achievements reached out beyond Eastern Europe and the Adriatic to more distant regions—to the China coasts or the polar wastes of Francis Joseph Land. Ludwig Ritter von Hohnel was one of the monarchy's more notable overseas figures, a naval officer who became a celebrity in the 1880s and 1890s for his expeditions to East Africa. Hohnel was the explorer who named Lake Rudolf in northern Kenya for the monarchy's late crown prince, and in 1905 he would become the monarchy's first emissary to the court of Abyssinia. Over Land and Sea is Hohnel's memoir not only of his African travels but of his life at sea with the monarchy's navy and of his service at the Hofburg as one of

In the aftermath of the televised horrors of 1999, it may be almost impossible for Westerners to think of Kosovo as anything other than a land occupied by rival, deeply segregated societies, each of which is prepared to enforce its exclusive claims by violence. Duijzings' study makes the too often forgotten points that, while Kosovo has been the home of antagonistic "parallel" societies, relations among ethnic groups in Kosovo have never been based solely or even predominantly on conflict, and that group boundaries have often been fluid and permeable.
