The mechanical, thermal and acoustic properties were characterized as a function of process temperature and time. The results showed that it is possible to produce glass foams with thermal and acoustic insulation properties from a mixture consisting of 96.5% of glass waste, 1% of textile waste and 2.5% of manganese dioxide, processed at temperatures between 800 and 900 °C for a time between 30 and 90 min. The samples had density in the range of 200–300 kg m−3, porosity of 87–92%, thermal conductivity of 85–105 mW m−1 K−1, noise-reducing factors of 0.15–0.40 and compressive strength of 1.2–3.0 MPa. Although their insulation performance was not as outstanding as that of polymer foams, these materials can emerge as competitive candidates for applications requiring non-flammability and high-temperature load bearing capacity in combination with low weight, mechanica...

Non-conventional materials mainly include recycled materials, which reduce production costs and lead to environmental benefits related to their reuse. The aim of this research was to evaluate the influence of recycled tyre rubber in the production of asphalt concrete for road pavements built with recycled aggregates consisting of steel slag in relation to possible improvements in structural performance during operation (i.e., fatigue and rutting). Steel slag has a higher bulk specific gravity than natural aggregates, and it has a very porous surface that allows for a different interaction with the bitumen and the crumb rubber compared to traditional aggregates. To this end, two mixtures of asphalt concrete are compared. One was mixed with a modest percentage by weight of crumb r...

It has the largest and most terrible image of Satan in all of Europe. First published in 1997, this book has had several reprints due the success which it goes on having, so much so that it is now being reprinted for the 4th time in an updated and improved edition with new photos to further illustrate the fascinating image of a character ever present in Italian paintings. This books considers the meaning and the evolution of the Devil in Medieval and Renaissance Art in Florence, and by means of a careful analysis of the surviving works of art of the period, it pays attention to the least significant artefacts as well as to pictorial works of great importance and beauty.

The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1970

It was found that reduction of pressure, on reaming, by suction through a separate, peripheral opening in the distal metaphysis, considerably diminished the vascular damage in the cortex. In these cases the primarly avascular part of the cortex began to be revascularized two weeks after the operation, a process which was almost completed after a further two weeks. When the pressure in the medullary cavity was not reduced during the reaming, the degree of intracortical avascularity was considerably greater, and persisted to a large part after an observation time of four weeks.

Research paper thumbnail of Production of Asphalt Pavements Using a Recovery Product of Steelworks Slag

Proceedings of the Eighth International Conference on Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Pavements, 2016

A fine natural aggregate obtained through recovery treatment of a steelworks slag has been study ... more A fine natural aggregate obtained through recovery treatment of a steelworks slag has been study to assess its use in the asphalt concrete production. Routinely this aggregate is only used, mixed with a (0,25 \u2013 1 mm) sand to produce asphalt. The process was developed in laboratory scale aiming to transform a waste product into raw material, following the principles of circular economy. The aggregate produced from this recovery has been studied, from a physical-dimensional point of view, to assess its compatibility with the production of asphalt concrete. We compared the results of the characterization with a natural aggregate from quarry. Specimens of asphalt concrete have been produced using the two aggregates to evaluate their mechanical characteristics. In particular, we examined the resistance to permanent deformations, associated with degradation and rutting of pavements. The tests were carried out in the laboratory through a Marshall test as well as dynamic creep test. The differences in the volumetric properties of the two asphalt products were also evaluated

The influence of particles size and shape on the separation was studied. Tests were conducted using a dynamic cylindrical two stages dense medium separator fed with water or with a NaCI water solution. The purity of the recovered material at the sink and float discharges were evaluated (PET and PE respectively).

Research paper thumbnail of Recovery of residual copper from low-content tailings derived from waste electrical cable treatment

International Journal of Mineral Processing, 2015

The current work aims at the recovery of residual copper from electrical cables with low content ... more The current work aims at the recovery of residual copper from electrical cables with low content of copper (less than 5%). The sample originated from the tailings of electrical cables that had been previously subjected to copper recycling treatment. The tailings were successively treated with physical methods (sieving, heavy medium separation in ZnCl 2 bath, and counter-current separation) and electrochemical methods (cementation, electrowinning). Sieving seems to be more efficient than gravity separation methods, since, for 1.00 mm aperture and sieving time as short as 2 min, the undersize copper grade of the product was 57% in copper (from 4% in the feed), with corresponding copper recovery of 53%. Longer sieving times or larger apertures led to products with higher copper recovery but of lower grade. As regards cementation, preliminary tests were carried out to investigate the effect of pH using high purity CuSO 4 • 5H 2 O instead of dissolving metallic copper. Subsequent tests using the sieving undersize product of the scrap copper wire confirmed the results of the preliminary tests; in addition to pH, this product was also used to investigate the effects of the attacking chemical (H 2 SO 4 , HCl, H 2 O 2), sacrificial metal (aluminium, iron scrap), temperature, and surface area on cementation. The results show that cementation of the dissolved copper from scrap wire is efficient at pH = 2.5-3.2, with sufficient copper recovery within a few hours. Also, electrowinning tests on the undersize sieving product proved the feasibility to obtain pure copper by electrodeposition onto stainless steel cathode with lead anode, without contamination of the electrolytic solution. In both methods, copper purity degrades when HCl acid is used instead of H 2 SO 4. Especially with the use of H 2 SO 4 in electrowinning, it was observed that lead anode is passivated when the solution is entirely depleted from copper ions. The results of the current work clearly demonstrate the feasibility to obtain pure copper from low-grade electric wire scraps by successively submitting the tailings to sieving and cementation.

Research paper thumbnail of 2-Substituted Penems with Amino Acid-Related Side Chains: Synthesis and Antibacterial Activity of a New Series of .beta.-Lactam Antibiotics

The nature of the amino acyl derivative proved to be crucial both from a synthetic point of view, as beta-lactam ring opening can compete with C-2 nucleophilic substitution, and for antibacterial activity. Primary amino acid amides emerged as the most suitable side chains for enhancing permeability through a Gram-negative outer membrane. In vitro activity of the new 2-[(aminoamido)methyl]penems 3a-u was influenced by the nature and position of the amide moiety, the ring size for cyclic amides, and the configuration of the amino acid. Compounds bearing amides derived from small N-methyl amino acids (such as 3a) or from cyclic amino acids (such as prolinamide 3p and 4-hydroxyprolinamide 3r) showed broad spectrum in vitro activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms.
