Research paper thumbnail of Removal of Beta-Lactams Antibiotics through Zero-Valent Copper Nanoparticles

Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society

The removal of the beta-lactam antibiotics (ceftriaxone and cefadroxil) through zero-valent coppe... more The removal of the beta-lactam antibiotics (ceftriaxone and cefadroxil) through zero-valent copper nanoparticle (nZVC) was studied in this work. Excellent removal degrees (> 85%) were obtained for both analytes in only 20 min of reaction. Studies were performed in both oxic and anoxic conditions, and in the presence of t-butyl alcohol (TBA), an inhibitor of radicals. The results did not show significant changes. Therefore, the hydroxyl radicals are not the main species responsible for the removal. Total organic carbon cefadroxil analysis indicated a removal of 57% after 180 min of reaction. Studies involving Cu + indicated that probably these are the principal species responsible for the removal of antibiotics. Kinetic studies have shown that two-phase reaction occurred in the antibiotics removal process and both phases followed pseudo-first order kinetic model. The first mechanism is related to the antibiotics degradation by Cu + species and the second mechanism is related to the antibiotics adsorption by hydroxides/oxides of Cu 2+ species.

Bearing in mind that standard treatments are ineffective in delaying the disease progression, alternative treatments capable of eliminating symptoms and reversing the clinical condition have been sought. Possible alternative treatments include cell therapy, especially with the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). MSC are adult stem cells which have demonstrated remarkable therapeutic power in parkinsonian animals due to their differentiation competence, migratory capacity and the production of bioactive molecules. This review aims to analyze the main studies involving MSC and PD in more than a decade of studies, addressing their different methodologies and common characteristics, as well as suggesting perspectives on the application of MSC in PD. The results of MSC therapy in animal models and some clinical trials suggest that such cellular therapy may slow the p...

Research paper thumbnail of Gastric fundus submucosa as a site for islets transplantation: An experimental study

Annals of medicine and surgery (2012), 2018

Islets of Langerhans transplantation is a promising alternative for glycemic control in patients ... more Islets of Langerhans transplantation is a promising alternative for glycemic control in patients with type 1 diabetes. The graft site is a factor that has large impact on the functioning of this transplant, and the stomach appears to be a promising location. Our objective is to describe a new experimental model for the grafting of Islets of Langerhans in rat stomachs. Islets of Langerhans were extracted from 45 isogenic male rats of the Lewis lineage and transplanted into 9 isogenic rats of the Wistar lineage; 5 in the gastric body submucosa, and 4 in the gastric fundus submucosa. Normoglycemia was defined as two successive measurements of <250 mg/dL. No immunosuppression was used. The two groups glycemia control improvement were compared with-student test. The results obtained following the transplantation of the islets in 9 rats showed between 995 and 2310 islets transplanted (mean of 1367). The rats from the gastric submucosa group had a better glycemic level improvement, with...

Research paper thumbnail of Component tree analysis of cystovirus φ6 nucleocapsid Cryo-EM single particle reconstructions

The component trees are derived from density maps of cryo-electron microscopy single particle reconstructions. Analysis determines position and occupancy of structure elements responsible for RNA packaging and transcription. Occupancy of the hexameric nucleotide triphosphorylase (P4) and RNA polymerase (P2) are found to be essentially complete in the NC. The P8 protein lattice likely fixes P4 and P2 in place during maturation. We propose that the viral procapsid (PC) is a dynamic structural intermediate where the P4 and P2 can attach and detach until held in place in mature NCs. During packaging, the PC expands to accommodate the RNA, and P2 translates from its original site near the inner 3-fold axis (20 sites) to the inner 5-fold axis (12 sites) with excess P2 positioned inside the central region of the NC.

Research paper thumbnail of Medial patellofemoral ligament and medial patellotibial ligament reconstruction in children: preliminary results

Method: This is a case series study in patients with patellar instability with open physis. In total, seven patients were evaluated: four males and three females were operated using the proposed technique. Patients with open physis who had more than two episodes of recurring patellar dislocation were included. No patients underwent additional procedures. The distance from the anterior tibial tuberosity to the trochlea grove (TT-TG) was measured in all patients. On physical examination, the inverted J-sign, the apprehension sign, and the knee range of motion parameters were used in the pre-and post-operative period. In addition, the Kujala and Lysholm scores were applied before and 12 months after surgery. The results were analyzed with the Wilcoxon test. Results: The mean age of the patients was 11.28 in both genders. Comparing the data of the pre-and post-operative period, the inverted J-sign was present in six patients (85.7%) vs. absent in one (14.3%). The apprehension sign was absent in cases in the postoperative period; the range of motion was 117.85 ± 8.09 vs. 148.57 ± 3.77. The Kujala score was 42.57 ± 8.9 vs. 88.57 ± 5.09 and the Lysholm scores were classified as excellent or good in 28.6% and 71.4%, respectively. Conclusion: The combined reconstruction of the medial patellofemoral ligament combined with the medial patellotibial ligament in skeletally immature patients with predisposing factors, presents satisfactory results without episodes of recurrence or residual subluxation; according to these preliminary results, it should be considered as a treatment option.

One of the greatest barriers to this technique is the low number of pancreas donors and the low number of pancreases that are available for transplantation. Rodent models have been chosen in most studies of islet rejection and type 1 diabetes prevention to evaluate the quality and function of isolated human islets and to identify alternative solutions to the problem of islet scarcity. The purpose of this study is to conduct a review of islet xenotransplantation experiments from humans to rodents, to organize and analyze the parameters of these experiments, to describe trends in experimental modeling and to assess the viability of this procedure. In this study, we reviewed recently published research regarding islet xenotransplantation from humans to rodents, and we summarized the findings and organized the relevant data. The i...
