The assessment of pesticide effects in arthropods historically have relied heavily on acute letha... more The assessment of pesticide effects in arthropods historically have relied heavily on acute lethal effects. Although the sublethal responses to such compounds are sometimes neglected, stimulatory effects associated with low doses of compounds toxic at higher doses, such as pesticides, have been widely reported in recent years and recognized as a general toxicological phenomenon. Evidence of such stimulatory response has also been reported among mites and a few insect pest-species exposed to pesticides and recognized as a one of the potential causes underlying pest resurgence and secondary pest outbreaks. However, fitness parameters and its implications were seldom considered in these studies and natural enemies are not usually target of attention. Here, we reported the stimulatory effect of sublethal doses (ranging from 0.02 to 172.00 ppb in addition to the control) of the pyrethroid permethrin topically applied to third instar nymphs of the spined soldier bug, Podisus distinctus (Stål) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). The parameters estimated from the fertility tables of insects exposed to the increasing doses of insecticide indicated a slight increase in the mean survival time for doses > or = 0.20 ppb and a peak in the net reproductive rate at 1.72 ppb. This trend is coincident and correlated with the intrinsic rate of population growth (n = 18, r = 0.78, P = 0.0001), which also shows a peak at 1.72 ppb, leading to higher reproductive values of insects exposed to this dose. The phenomenon is consistent with insecticide-induced hormesis, for which the potential implications are discussed.

The purpose of this paper was to investigate associations between the centripetal distribution of... more The purpose of this paper was to investigate associations between the centripetal distribution of the body fat and serum lipid-lipoproteins, blood pressure and the index Homa-IR of insulin resistance, adjusting for indicators of overweight and cardiorespiratory fitness. Eighty-nine voluntaries were analyzed (44 men and 45 women). The centripetal distribution of the body fat was analyzed through waist circumference (CC) and the overweight by the body mass index (BMI). The cardiorespiratory fitness was followed by the estimate VO2max by test of walking. After adjusted for BMI values were found significant coefficient of correlation between CC and levels of blood pressure and ApoB in men, and between CC and index Homa-IR and triglycerides in women. After adjusted for VO2max values were verified significant correlations between CC and ApoB and index Homa-IR in men, and between CC and index Homa-IR in women. In conclusion, depending on the sex, the quantity and distribution of the body fat can present different actions in the insulin resistance and associated dysfunctions. The cardiorespiratory fitness per se seems not to contribute on the minimization of the association between the centripetal distribution of the body fat and the index Homa-IR; but presents a considerable impact on the association between the centripetal distribution of the body fat and the lipid metabolism and the levels of blood pressure, mainly in men.

Background and purpose: The discovery of the pharmacological functions of nitric oxide has led t... more Background and purpose: The discovery of the pharmacological functions of nitric oxide has led to the development of NO donor compounds as therapeutic agents. A new generation of ruthenium NO donors, cis-[Ru(NO)(bpy)2L]Xn, has been developed, and our aim was to show that these complexes are able to lyse Trypanosoma cruzi in vitro and in vivo.Experimental approach: NO donors were incubated with T. cruzi and their anti-T. cruzi activities evaluated as the percentage of lysed parasites compared to the negative control. In vivo, trypanocidal activity was evaluated by observing the levels of parasitaemia, survival rate and elimination of amastigotes in mouse myocardial tissue. The inhibition of GAPDH was monitored by the biochemical reduction of NAD+ to NADH.Key results: The NO donors cis-[Ru(NO)(bpy)2L]Xn presented inhibitory effects on T. cruzi GAPDH (IC50 ranging from 89 to 153 µM). The crystal structure of the enzyme shows that the inhibitory mechanism is compatible with S-nitrosylation of the active cysteine (cys166) site. Compounds cis-[Ru(NO)(bpy)2imN](PF6)3 and cis-[Ru(NO)(bpy)2SO3]PF6, at a dose of 385 nmol·kg−1, yielded survival rates of 80 and 60%, respectively, in infected mice, and eradicated any amastigotes from their myocardial tissue.Conclusions and implications: The ruthenium compounds exhibited potent in vitro and in vivo trypanocidal activities at doses up to 1000-fold lower than the clinical dose for benznidazole. Furthermore, one mechanism of action of these compounds is via the S-nitrosylation of Cys166 of T. cruzi GAPDH. Polygon clipping is an important operation that computers execute all the time. An algorithm that... more Polygon clipping is an important operation that computers execute all the time. An algorithm that clips a polygon is rather complex. Each edge of the polygon must be tested against each edge of the clipping window, usually a rectangle. As a result, new edges may be added, and existing edges may be discarded, retained, or divided. Multiple polygons may result from clipping a single polygon. After clipping, we may have a set of segments, which must be handled to generate the clipped polygon. This work proposes two new algorithms: clipping polygon against a rectangle window, and polygon reconstruction from a set of segments. The algorithms were implemented in Secondo, a platform for implementing and experimenting with various kinds of data models.

Apesar do excesso de gordura no corpo ser considerado como fator de risco independente para o adv... more Apesar do excesso de gordura no corpo ser considerado como fator de risco independente para o advento de disfunções degenerativas, a concentração de gordura localizada na região do tronco e do abdome e, principalmente, aquela disposta na região intra-abdominal ou visceral é a que apresenta maior associação com distúrbios metabólicos. A concentração de gordura centrípeta constitui-se em nítido fator de risco para a chamada síndrome metabólica, também conhecida como síndrome plurimetabólica ou simplesmente "síndrome X". Tal síndrome caracteriza-se por uma gama de disfunções endócrinometabólicas, induzindo seu portador a queda acentuada da qualidade de vida, devido a morbi-mortalidade decorrente. A prevalência da obesidade visceral e possíveis conseqüências degenerativas aparentam ser resultantes principalmente de distúrbios genéticos e endócrinos, podendo o diagnóstico ser realizado por intermédio de estimativas mediante medidas antropométricas ou por métodos de diagnóstico por imagem. Dentre os meios utilizados para a prevenção e tratamento dos altos níveis de adiposidade centrípeta, balanço energético negativo mediante reeducação alimentar e exercício físico demonstram alta eficiência, podendo a gordura localizada no tronco e no abdome, e principalmente a gordura visceral serem mobilizadas preferencialmente como fonte energética ao se confrontar com a gordura localizada em outras regiões do corpo. No que diz respeito ao exercício físico, não se observa consenso com relação ao tipo, à intensidade, à freqüência e à duração ideais, apesar de os exercícios aeróbios demonstrarem ser os mais efetivos..
