Their politics and their economy have always been oriented toward their great neighbour of the North that also has obtained influence in the culture and the society. This relation is marked by feelings and ambiguous interests that have made us reflect without being able to find a solution. Through historical and literary document analysis this article sets out to arrive at the beginnings of this problematic during the first half of the XIXth century. Geography, the economy and politics join two worlds separated by history and culture, and yet they do not manage to avoid the difficulties and the friction between them. ¿How much have changed the relations between both parts? ¿Which one was the image Latin America had of the United States in the XIXth century? ¿Is this different from the present image? Reviewing the work of authors in the past and comparing it with the one of contemporary thinkers we could give an answer to these questions and perhaps give a new approach to our relations with North America.
