The paper first introduces DL P syntax and semantics. Then, a DL P-based approach is illustrated for inferring complex knowledge assertions from information sources characterized by heterogeneities in formats and representational structures. The thus obtained complex knowledge assertions can be exploited for constructing a user profile and for improving the quality of present Web search tools.

The proposed architecture is two-tier and can be seen as a variant of the well-known mediator-based one. The main feature of this architecture is that it is specifically conceived to realize very large systems, comprising hundreds of local databases. A structured, hierarchical global scheme, called data repository, is adopted as the core structure to guarantee friendly access to available data through a graphical Web interface. The architecture described here has been implemented in a system, called NET R, constructed on top of the set of databases owned by Italian Central Government offices.

The derivation process has an iterative nature and works by case analysis over database schemes, in a way somehow similar to the way knowledge discovery processes behave on database extensions: for this reason, we call it Intentional Knowledge Discovery. Complex properties have a fuzzy nature and are represented and manipulated using a fuzzy variant of Description Logics. The paper presents detailed descriptions of procedures used to derive complex properties. As far as applications are concerned, the paper illustrates several query optimization cases and a view maintenance algorithm both based on the availability of extracted complex properties.

However, sensors may be unreliable, that is, they may deliver wrong information (due, e.g., to hardware or software malfunctioning) and, consequently, they may cause agents to take wrong decisions, which is a scenario that should be avoided. The paper considers the problem of reasoning in noisy environments in a setting where no (either certain or probabilistic) data is available in advance about the reliability of sensors. Therefore, assuming that each agent is equipped with a background theory (in our setting, an extended logic program) encoding its general knowledge about the world, we define a concept of detecting an anomaly perceived in sensor data and the related concept of agent recovering to a coherent status of information. In this context, the complexities of various anomaly detection and anomaly recovery problems are studied.

At the heart of the knowledge discovery process is the application of data mining algorithms in charge of extracting hidden relationships among pieces of stored information. Information thus extracted from databases have widespread use in great many application domains and contexts.
