The objective of this study was to describe oral health literacy and its
association with periodontal health status.
Methods
A population of young adults, enlisted personnel, at a military police force at
Escola da Guarda (EG - GNR) in Portalegre, Portugal, participated in this crosssectional
study. Information on sociodemographic, dental and oral health
literacy was collected. Oral health literacy was assessed using OHLI (Oral
Health Literacy Instrument). Clinical periodontal examinations were
performed, and data was obtained for oral hygiene status and severity of
gingival inflammation.
Results
A total of 274 participants enrolled and completed the study. Most participants
(54.7 percent) had an adequate oral health literacy level. For 38 percent the
level of literacy was marginal and, 7.3 percent had an inadequate level of oral
health literacy. There is an association between education and oral health
literacy (P<0.001). Female participants had more general oral health
knowledge than males (P=0.034). Participants with the 12th grade or less have
statistically significant less general oral health knowledge than participants
with a bachelor’s degree (P<0.001). Dental plaque index was lower for
participants with higher attendance of dental appointments (P=0.002) and adequate oral health literacy (P =
0.009).
Conclusions
Oral health literacy, education and frequency of dental appointments were associated. General oral
knowledge is worst for males and people with lower education levels. Oral hygiene status is better for
participants with adequate oral health literacy and a higher number of dental appointments.

literacy’s level is fundamental in public health, since individuals
with limited levels of health literacy have significant
difficulties in communicating successfully in today’s society.
OBJECTIVES: To translate and validate the Portuguese language
version of Oral Health Literacy Instrument (OHLI) for
the evaluation of oral health literacy in adults. METHODS
AND MATERIALS: The translation and validation of the
Portuguese language version of OHLI was carried out in individuals
aged over 19 years in the Lisbon region. Variables
characterizing the sample and health literacy were analyzed.
The total OHLI value was obtained by adding the dimensions
of reading, comprehension and numeracy. The internal consistency
was evaluated by Cronbach’s α, the validation of the
construct was performed by the factorial analysis of questions
of the same dimension and by the application of the
Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test. RESULTS: Of the 81 interviewees,
76.5% were women. High values of internal consistency were
obtained for both OHLI (0.8) and its dimensions (0.7). For the
knowledge test, a value of 0.70 was obtained. The mean final
value of OHLI was 81.21, with higher values observed in
people with higher education (p <0.001). CONCLUSIONS:
The Portuguese language version of OHLI (P-OHLI) is a reliable
and valid instrument and can be applied in Portuguesespeaking
adults, with the necessary cultural adaptations, to
evaluate oral health literacy.

The aim of the present study was to obtain information on habits, knowledge and oral hygiene attitudes of Portuguese teenagers and to study the gender differences concerning these issues. A total of 1203 adolescents participated in the study (55.8% females; mean age, 14.9 years). To recruit participants, a national network of community dental hygienists, working in the health centers, was created, and adolescents were contacted at the schools. A questionnaire was applied in the classroom, during school hours, under supervision of one researcher and the classroom teacher, after collection of informed consent forms. Portuguese adolescents do not seem to have dental fear but have some anxiety when at the dental office; girls are more anxious than boys. Girls are also more concerned with esthetics and aware of dental problems and care about oral health of family and friends. Parental supervision is more relevant for boys in order to obtain better compliance with dental care; however, 97.2% of the adolescents do not consider maintaining teeth throughout the lifetime as relevant. Teenagers recognize dental professionals as educators and oral health as relevant in their lives. It is possible to assume that gender has an influence on adolescent's habits, behavior and attitudes regarding oral hygiene. There is a difference between boys and girls concerning their habits, knowledge and attitudes in dental hygiene; this difference may show the need to create different strategies for oral health promotion for these two groups of adolescents.

The goal of this work was to translate and validate into Portuguese a health literacy evaluation instrument (OHLI), with the authorization of the original author’s Method: The authors of this work developed the Portuguese version of the instrument for health literacy evaluation. The OHLI is composed by an oral health knowledge test, and a numeracy and reading comprehension component. The Portuguese version was applied to 81 individuals, and validated. It is now ready to be applied to the Portuguese population. Result: Data analysis of the Portuguese version suggests that it is very similar with the original instrument for OHLI mean values and for the means values of each of its components. Same similarities were found for the analysis by gender. On the oral health knowledge test, the Portuguese version presented better results tha...

Method: A clinical trial was developed at the University of Lisbon’s Dental School with 60 volunteer dental hygiene students. After signature of an informed consent, students were randomly divided in two experimental groups of 30 individuals each. For a two weeks time period, one group used the essential oils mouthrinse, Listerine Cool Mint, according to manufacturer’s instructions, and the other group flossed twice-a-day. Both groups received a toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste for home dental hygiene care. A baseline dental hygiene appointment consisted on tooth scaling and polishing and on the collection of the study data, using the Lobene modified gingival index (Lobene et al., 1986) for the determination of gingival inflammatory signs; Saxton & Ouderaa ...
