It introduces a design perspective, presenting a real case history: the new Visitor Space in Milan, crafted thanks to a scientific agreement between the Politecnico di Milano and the Chamber of Commerce of Milano, Monza Brianza and Lodi. It is an accurate design project to welcome people in an environment where private and public dimensions, as well as analog and digital components, come together creating a multisensory experience, favoring different ways to perceive and live a city.

A human-centered design process was used, exploring the potential of creativity and design thinking while cocreating with the actual people involved in the project – the dormitory students, staff, and the local community members. The process and the methodology used were very important, especially the co-design activities: the dorm, in fact, was designed by the PSSD students in the studio for the students and with the students of the dorm. The dormitory, as a part, like most university campuses and schools, as a whole, can be considered an urban hub through which synergistic relations take place between the structure of the dorm and the neighbourhood and vice versa. Six interesting scenarios designed by students that explore the sense o...

An especially challenging task emerges from the enhancement of programs and facilities particularly affected by transformations and new configurations of learning and research environments. This paper focuses on the definition of tailor-made methods and tools merging the contribution of Service and Spatial Design for the meta-design development of the new scientific campus of the Università degli Studi di Milano to be built on the former Milano Expo 2015 site.

Systemic Design intends to develop methodologies and approaches that help to integrate systems thinking with design towards sustainability at the environmental, social and economic levels. Based on the Hall of the Future requalification project, designed with the Chamber of Commerce of Milan, this essay describes a Systemic Research project with a focus on the use of a Co-Design approach within the process. Moreover, it illustrates an established relationship between two different public institutions, highlighting how to share a fresh approach to designing new services aimed at the world of business, trade and tourism, and the consequent re-functionalization and enhancement of its given spaces.

The term hospitality is used here with a wide meaning, coming from the idea that "Real hospitality is not just welcoming people in on the first night, but liking that they come back and stay, fitting into the city, making their own contribution and making the place their own" (Leadbeater, 2009). Collection and analysis of more than 61 examples of hospitality sharing services was a useful tool to understand the current international scenario. The collected case studies were presented on 6 positioning maps regarding six specific themes of the study.

Linda DREW * Vice Chair DRS Council and independent researcher This paper begins with a discussion of approaches to co-creation and the application of design thinking (Sanders and Stappers, 2008). In this discussion, examples of co-creation approaches include Open Space Technology (Owen, 1997) a model of collaborative, research-informed facilitation and writing mostly used in higher education settings. The discussion reveals aspects of these approaches which enhance cocreation and peer to peer facilitation as well as high quality researchinformed writing and curriculum development using the cognitive characteristics of design thinking (Oxman, 1999 & 2004). Significant features of the OST model are assessed to understand relevance for educators and practitioners in design as an anti-hierarchical approach to research-informed writing and curriculum development. The paper goes on to analyse two case studies of different stages in the experience of a group of art and design educators brought together to re-imagine a research-informed curriculum after an institutional merger. The group uses co-creation and OST informed approaches such as World Café and Bar Camps to co-create a blueprint for a research-informed curriculum. This analysis draws on evaluation reports. The paper concludes with suggestions for further development in design Higher Education contexts.

Energy for life”. The period of time separating us from the event is generating the creation of a community which in many ways feels part of the advent of Expo 2015, “looking forward”, for example, with growing interest and curiosity to the event, “participating” in its coming about with its contribution and, finally, “visiting” the exposition and related initiatives in 2015. “Mobile Expo” and the “Cluster International Workshop” are two of the activities which are typical of the collective process in place and the outputs of which are promoters of innovation and socialization.
