A Longitudinal epidemiologic study was developed for the isolation, biochemical characterization ... more A Longitudinal epidemiologic study was developed for the isolation, biochemical characterization and molecular typing the bacterial pathogen Clostridium spp found in soil from areas affected by bovine sudden mortality. Weincluded 10 herds, located in three localities. The genetic variability of Clostridium genus was analyzed by DNA sequence of a 1500 bp fragment from the 16S rRNA gene. Twenty four Clostridium isolates were biochemically classified as Clostridium sordellii (41,7%), Clostridium glycolicum (12,5%), Clostridium hastiforme (12,5%); Clostridium botulinum (8,3%), Clostridium butyricum (8,3%); Clostridium chauvoei (4,3%),Clostridium limosum (4,3%), Clostridium septicum (4,3%) and Clostridium tertium (4,3%). The bacteria that showed pathogenic activity were studied further by 16S rRNA gene sequencing at, which 55.5% was classified as C. botulinum, where the native strain isolated from areas with outbreaks wasfound in a different group from Clostridium spp. used by commercial laboratories for vaccine production. Additionally, the native strain identified here differs from others reported in Gen Bank, indicating that the native pathogenic Clostridium spp. is genetically different to other Clostridium spp. used to prepare immunogens affecting vaccine efficiency. Our results indicate that the use of native strains could improve commercial vaccine preparations, increasing bovine immune response.

An exploratory study of the livestock service sector was carried out over 13 months through individual open-ended interviews at regional and national levels. The study involved five main stakeholders: producers, service providers, government, training institutions and product purchasers. Four regional case studies examined smallholder, dairy, beef and dual purpose cattle production systems. Despite service availability and professional oversupply , low demand for services and unsatisfied needs were detected. Veterinary public health was widely omitted, highlighting the need for the active role that the public sector must have in policy-making for provision of these services. Some policy recommendations which involve all stakeholders are presented. Despite limitations, the potential and value of participative approaches as a complementary tool is emphasized.

The development of animal health services is highlighted and the new challenges which these services must meet, with respect to the restructuring of international trade, are described. The economic impact of animal diseases and of disease control is evaluated by taking a regional approach and by analysing production systems. A classification of production systems is accompanied by case studies on the economics of animal health. Emphasis is placed on national control programmes, diseases which affect reproduction, parasitic diseases and mastitis, with particular reference to the livestock sector of Colombia. The authors suggest that integrated livestock development programmes include the management of animal health and production information. A change of attitude is also recommended with greater participation of those involved. The need to co-ordinate sustained research initiatives is stressed.

Anthropogenic changes, extensive use of land and agriculture, among other factors, are involved in the apparent increase in the frequency of zoonotic diseases in recent decades. As an approach to human/animal interface in Neotropical conditions, cases of zoonotic diseases of viral origin (West Nile fever) and other bacterial (mycobacteriosis), where samples were taken for detection of agents causes of these diseases, based on field methodologies (commercial tests) and laboratory (plates essays, staining and microscopic observation, microbiological culture and molecular techniques), in populations of resident and migratory wild birds in island locations (San Andres Island) and continental in Colombia, in oropharyngeal swabs, cloacal swabs, blood, internal organs, among others, from 300 birds for West Nile virus and 250 birds for mycobacteria. In order to help readers understand the importance of the emerging field of veterinary public health (VPH), the authors review the importance and current status of VPH in different countries and assess the role that veterinarians can play in overcoming situations that threaten human health. The last section discusses the need for training veterinarians in VPH and the important role that veterinarians can play within international public health organizations and multidisciplinary groups, such as SAPUVET and SPVet networks.
