Each program is different in its day-to-day planning but all adhere to the mission, full inclusion of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The purpose of this evaluative research study was to examine and understand the functional components of postsecondary education programs that promote self-determination for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to differentiate programs that include or do not include these components. Narratives of Hope and Grief in Higher Education
This chapter discusses how the loss of a mentee and friend to an unexpected suicide resulted in a... more This chapter discusses how the loss of a mentee and friend to an unexpected suicide resulted in an ability to find strength and hope through a guilt filled grieving process. The notion that grief is a negative emotion is reexamined through a storytelling lens to demonstrate how the nonlinear process can be positive. The story will articulate how one individual found hope in unimaginable moments resulting in their own personal commitment to make meaningful life changes in themselves and others. Lastly, this chapter will discuss the importance of faculty and staff focusing on their own mental health and using their voices and stories to support their students and address the stigma of mental health and suicide.
