Six years ago, in the Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing, global perinatal research priorities were identified. 2 This editorial provides an update to the 2011 editorial, which focused on the critical importance of the provision of evidence-based maternal healthcare. The current editorial also reflects the movement of the global community from the Millennium Development Goals adopted in 2000 to the Sustainable Development Goals, which were adopted by the United Nations in 2015. The Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved by 2030 include maternal targets to ensure there are fewer than 70 maternal deaths per 100 000 live births by 2030. 3 A landmark multidisciplinary action plan for the improvement of maternal health is summarized in the significant 2016 Lancet series on maternal health. This series covers the epidemiology of maternal health, the current state of maternal healthcare services, and future challenges, synthesizing 10 years of evidence. It also creates a vision of potential strategies to improve maternal well-being through 2030. This series concludes with an agenda for change: high-quality care for every woman everywhere; equity through universal health coverage; increased healthcare system resilience, strength, and responsiveness; sustainable financing for maternal/newborn healthcare; and better evidence, advocacy, and Disclosure: The authors have disclosed that she has no significant relationships with, or financial interest in, any commercial companies pertaining to this article.

Health indicators include mortality rates and life expectancy, birth outcomes, risk of illness, patterns of deteriorating health, cardiovascular disease, body mass index, hypertension, and depression. Multiple factors explain variability, including length of residence and acculturation, disease exposure, life style and living conditions, risky behaviors, healthy habits, social support networks, cultural and linguistic barriers, experiences with racism, and levels of awareness of cultural health practices among health care providers. Evidence exists for superior health among many migrants to Western countries relative to native-born persons, but the differential disappears over time. Migration is a dynamic, extended process with effects occurring years after physical relocation. Systemic change is required, including health policies that ensure equity for migra...

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there is a 1:10 adverse event rate in hospitalized patients in high-income countries, with half being preventable (www.who.int/patientsafety/en). Although many worthwhile initiatives are being implemented globally by international organizations and by faith-based and other nongovernmental organizations in lowand middle-income countries, there is a paucity of outcomes data on global mortality, acute morbidity, and longterm disability (www.marchofdimes. com). Three global initiatives contributing to quality improvement will be addressed in this column: (1) a Lebanese surveillance system, which can serve as a model for lowand middle-income countries, (2) Euro-Peristats; and (3) Reduction of maternal hemorrhage and mortality in low income countries. Lebanese Surveillance System. Twenty-three years ago the National Collaborative Perinatal Neonatal Network (NCPNN) was established in Lebanon to gather perinatal and neonatal health data; thus far, 30% of the births in Lebanon (24,000 births) at 31 hospitals have been captured, with expansion projected into underserved areas of the country. These data are being used to generate research on the health impact of consanguinity and early childbearing (which is common in Lebanon), preterm birth, low birthweight, birth defects, and perinatal and neonatal mortality. Euro-Peristats. In 1999 EUROPERISTAT was started as part of the European Union’s Health Monitoring Program. Quality indicators being collected include maternal, fetal/ neonatal, and child health; population characteristics and risk factors; and data on health services in European Union’s 25 member states. Databased conclusions include the identifi cation of gaps in maternal/child morbidity and knowledge of the social determinants of health, differences in health information systems, and lack of standard defi nitions in statistical reporting. As data from civil registration, birth registers,

After obtaining IRB approval and informed consent, the CLIPS pre and post assessment mean scores of 82 students in a Scholarly Inquiry in Nursing course were compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Confidence ratings in formal and informal writing were also obtained from a subsample of 47 students. Mean scores improved in 12 out of 26 assessment categories related to punctuation, correct usage of words, and sentence construction. Student mean confidence ratings increased each month.

Seventy percent of the 1.3 billion people living in extreme poverty are women, and when women have fi nancial resources, they use that money to educate and feed their children, and provide them with a better life. The core values of Global Girlfriends include (1) products made by women, (2) there is fair trade, and (3) the products are ecofriendly. Royalties go to the Campaign for Female Education (Camfed) that focuses on eradicating poverty in Africa by educating and empowering girls and young women living in rural Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, and Tanzania through microgrant and microcredit programs. Global Girlfriends has partnered with organizations from Denver, Colorado (the Women’s Bean Project) to the Gemini Trust, established to assist Ethiopian families with twins living in poverty. They also work with Assisi Garments in southern India, Craft Link Kenya, the Kubeshwar Technical School (KTS) in Nepal, Zandla Expressions in South Africa, Friendship Bridge in Vietnam and Guatemala, Gecko Traders in Cambodia, and Ten Thousand Villages. Global Girlfriends has helped these groups and many others develop products that fashion conscious women in the United States purchase. The founder of Global Girlfriends challenges us to stretch ourselves, providing the following suggestions for global involvement to help women and families in poverty: (1) learn about the issues facing the impoverished by accessing Web sites such as Aid to Artisans (www. aidtoartisans.org), the Global Fund for Women (www.globalfundfor women.org), Half the Sky Movement (www.halftheskymovement.org), Mothers Acting Up (www.mothers actingup.org), Women’s Funding Network (www.womensfundingnet work.org), and Women Thrive (www. womenthrive.org); (2) stop learning and get involved; (3) start locally in your own community, such as volunteering at a clinic for immigrants
