There was a gradual increase in pH, phenolphthalein alkalinity and dissolved oxygen value. The higher the phenolphthalein alkalinity, the greater is the production of oxygen due to photosynthesis. Considerable reduction in biochemical oxygen demand was observed.

For the study a comprehensive data were collected from the rice-wheat area of Pakistani Punjab. Three main districts of rice wheat area i.e. Gujranwala, Sheikhupura and Hafizabad were selected for the current study. Poisson regression analysis was carried out to estimate the determinants of livestock ownership. The impact of livestock ownership on household food security was estimated by employing the propensity score matching approach. The empirical results indicate that food security levels were higher in the range of 19-41 percent for the households having livestock ownership as compared to households having no livestock ownership. The policy implications of the study are that livestock ownership needs to be encouraged as it can help in ensuring rural household food security.

We therefore assessed the prevalence of two predictors of vascular events, fibrinogen and lipoprotein-a, in patients with and without erectile dysfunction. Men with erectile dysfunction (48 non-smokers, 48 smokers), aged 45-70 years, were compared with controls (21 non-smokers, 21 smokers) with normal erectile function and no known pathology. Serum total cholesterol was significantly higher in non-smokers with erectile dysfunction compared to both control non-smokers and erectile dysfunction smokers. Men with erectile dysfunction who smoked had a significantly higher plasma fibrinogen level than control smokers. Similarly, men with erectile dysfunction, who did not smoke had higher levels of plasma fibrinogen compared to both smokers and non-smokers without erectile dysfunction. No significant differen...

Epithelial cell suspensions from mini-pig prostate were successfully grown in primary and secondary cultures. The cultured epithelial cells exhibited rapid proliferation reaching confluency in approximately 6 days. Growth and proliferation of fibroblasts were markedly restricted by the dominance of epithelial cell growth. Confluent cultures could be maintained for approximately 6 weeks. The epithelial cells retained their polymorphic appearance in primary and secondary cultures and exhibited the characteristic formalin-resistant acid phosphatase reaction. Testosterone stimulated mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase (mAAT) activity and citrate production by confluent epithelial cell cultures. These initial results indicate that cultured epithelial cells derived from mini-pig prostate might be an excellent model related to human for studies of prostate biology and hormonal regulation.

The calculated imaginary part of the dielectric constant ⑀ 2 () shows an important anisotropy between ⑀ 2 Ќ () and ⑀ 2 ʈ () for perpendicular and parallel to the surface polarization of light. Moreover, for ⑀ 2 ʈ () there is an anisotropy between ⑀ 2 x () and ⑀ 2 y () when light is polarized in ͓11 0͔ and ͓001͔ directions. This latter anisotropy has been observed experimentally. Our results explain their origin through surface, subsurface, and sub-subsurface interband transitions based on first-principles calculations.

There are several attempts to improve the execution speed of these kernels at different levels of code. The optimizations in these implementations are either aimed at reducing the number of operations, or at exploiting various features provided by modern processor architectures. In this article, we suggest a novel approach of improving the performance of such kernels through code specialization. We generate multiple specialized versions and transform them at object-code level to generate another optimized version. The experiments have been performed over IA-64 architecture with icc compiler. We are able to achieve a good speed-up of more than 2 and 1.48 for IDCT and DCT respectively for different implementations of multimedia application.

There are at least 8 different amoebas that live in the human intestinal lumen however those are generally accepted as commensals except for E. histolytica . The parasite imposes a major threat to public health in most parts of world and has re-emerged in some previously dormant areas as it is categorized as second leading cause of death from parasitic disease worldwide. In most of E. histolytica infection, symptoms remain absent or very mild whereas most frequent clinical manifestation are colitis and liver abscess due to amoebic infection. Laboratory diagnosis of amoebiasis is usually made on the basis of microscopical and serological methods Nitromidazole derivatives like metronidazole, tinidazole and ornidazole are considered as foundation stone of the treatment for amoebiasis. Lack of effective vaccination is one of the major hurdles for the control of amoebiasis that may prevent transmission of the parasite and or at least progression of the infected individuals into active invasive disease. The aim of this article is to comprehensively review the epidemiology, disease pathology and treatment of this parasitic zoonotic disease.

The objective of this study was to investigate the eect of alloxan-induced DM on endogenous modulators of smooth muscle tone such as cyclic AMP (cAMP), cyclic GMP (cGMP) and prostaglandins. Male New Zealand white rabbits were rendered diabetic (hyperosmolar, non-ketotic) with an i.v. injection of alloxan. After 6 months, the urinary bladders and urethrae were excised, cut into segments, incubated with stimulators and the formation of prostaglandins (PG), cAMP and cGMP measured using radioimmunoassays. PGE 2 and PGI 2 formation was impaired in response to arachidonic acid stimulation, whereas it was increased in response to acetylcholine in DM detrusor, bladder neck and urethra compared to controls. Cyclic AMP and cGMP formation in response to forskolin and sodium nitroprusside, respectively, was signi®cantly reduced in the DM tissues of the lower urinary tract compared to the control. Alterations in the formation of prostaglandins, cAMP and cGMP by the smooth muscle of DM lower urinary tract suggests that these biochemical mediators may have a pathophysiological role in the urinary bladder dysfunction associated with DM.

There was no difference in age of onset or serological features of RA between males and females. HLA-DR4 phenotype frequency among female (68%) and male (71%) patients also did not differ significantly. The observed frequencies of HLA-DR4 genotypes (homozygous, heterozygous, and those lacking it) differed significantly (p less than 0.005) between affected and unaffected individuals. However, the observed genotype distribution did not differ from what is expected given the Hardy-Weinburg equilibrium. There is a direct correlation between the number of DR4 allele(s) carried (two, one, or zero) and the percent affected (p less than 0.026 for females and p less than 0.052 for males). These findings highlight the importance of discerning the additional genetic determinants, including those that are gender-associated, which influence susceptibility to RA.

HLA-DR4 was present in 75% of familial and 59% of sporadic RA patients. The frequency distribution of A2, B8, B27, Cw3 and DR3 differed somewhat between the two groups; however, the differences were not statistically significant in this small group of patients. Studies of a larger number of patients are indicated to explore the possibility of genetic subgroups in RA.
