The experiment was conducted to evaluate the short-day onion genotypes for quality attributes dur... more The experiment was conducted to evaluate the short-day onion genotypes for quality attributes during kharif 2017. Among thirty genotypes evaluated, the highest reducing sugars were recorded from the genotype COHBON03 (3.83%). The highest non-reducing sugars were recorded from the genotype COHBON08 (3.52%). The highest total sugars were recorded from the genotype COHBON03 (6.45%). The highest pyruvic acid content was recorded from the genotype COHBON17 (2.31 μmol/g). These genotypes can be used for commercial cultivation with high non reducing sugars, since those genotypes having high non reducing sugars and high pungency could have longer storability. Furthermore, these genotypes can be used as parental material in the quality improvement of bulb onion. Introduction Onion (Allium cepa L.) is vegetable crop of the family Alliaceae used in daily diet of human in almost all the countries of the world. It used both the green and mature bulb stages as a salad, vegetable and spices (Mahanthesh et al. 2008) [7]. It has immense acceptance owing its flavour, pungent taste, nutritional and medicinal value (Kale and Ajjappalavara, 2015) [5] , important source of phytonutrients, flavonoids, fructo-oligo-saccharides (FOS) and sulfur compounds (Slimestad et al., 2007) [12]. Onions are restrained higher levels of phenolic compounds that is flavonoids, which are classified into subclass flavones, flavanones, flavonols, isoflavones, flavanonols, flavanols, chalcones, and anthocyanins based on degree of unsaturation and degree of oxidation of the central ring (Perez-Gregorio et al., 2010) [8] , these are effective against degenerative pathologies like cardiovascular and neurological diseases are dysfunctions based on oxidative stress of antioxidant properties (Grifths et al., 2003). The quantum of pyruvate synthesized by the alliinase activity allows judge the pungency of onions (Bacon et al., 1999; Schwimmer, 1969) [1, 9]. The flavour compounds are produced by the spontaneous reactions of sulfenic acids. These further rearranged to form combination of sulfur-containing compounds namely thiosulfinates, thiosulfonates, and mono-, di-, tri-sulfides and specific compounds such as thiopropanal S-oxide and lachrymatory factors are responsible for the typical flavour of onions (Grifths et al., 2003). Sugars were added to sensory profiling, the soluble sugars directed to the sweetness of onions so the acceptability rose by the consumer as salad, carbohydrates play in the taste preference (Terry et al., 2005) [14]. Onion being important vegetable crop needs proper attention for producing better quality bulbs. The lower yields are attributed to limited availability of good cultivars, genotypes and improved varieties. Improved varieties would contribute to better crop yield. The present study was undertaken to examine the onion genotypes for better yielding of nutritional qualities traits.

It is mostly used as salad, pickles and garnish in cooked, fried, boiled and baked curries. Dietary demand of onion is increasing day by day due to the awareness of nutritional and medicinal importance. Nutritive value of onion varies from variety to variety; small multiplier onions are more nutritive and healthy with major value of flavour, flavonoids and other dietary values. The demand of onion within and outside the country has made it essential to supply around the year either from fresh harvest or from storage. Present production is enough to meet the domestic requirement with a limited quantity of onion export to gulf countries and need to focus on export for European countries. The self sufficiency of onion production is achieved due to proper planning of onion production in three seasons namely kharif, late kharif and rabi seasons, handling of post-harvest techniques like topping, curing and storage etc. Still it is necessary to make efforts for enhancement of productivity and minimizing post harvest losses to meet increasing demands of both domestic as well as export markets. Figuration Globally onions are grown in an area of 4.45 mha with a production of 85.94 mt of an average productivity of 19.30 t/ha. India is one of the leading onions growing country with an area of 1.2 mha with a production of 19.40 mt after china followed by USA, Iran, Russian Federation, Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, Brazil and Netherlands. The productivity of onion is highest in USA (54.60 t/ha) followed by Netherlands (49.70 mt/ha) and Egypt (33.70 mt/ha), whereas the productivity in India is quite low (16.1 t/ha) may be due to majority of Indian varieties are short day type which yields Onion is major vegetable crop in India as well as other parts the world. India ranks second in area and production next to china and are leading countries among major onion producer of world, India endow with several onion varieties suitable for different agro-climatic region and are recommended for different seasons, which are high yielding as well as tolerant to pest and diseases bred by mainly public sector from fast 20 years and ago to till date by various research organizations are led to remarkable rose in Indian onion industry, this article could give a brief information to farmers about availability of onion varieties in India, however this report might help for students and researchers those who are about engage in research could give knowledge input about varietal wealth of onion to advance the research activities.

Over the past eight to ten years massively parallel DNA sequencing platforms have become widely available with reducing the cost of DNA sequencing. Next generation platform (NGS) includes Helicos Heliscope TM , Pacific Biosciences SMRT, Ion Torrent, Oxford Nanopore, etc. These platforms have the potential to dramatically accelerate biological research, by enabling the comprehensive analysis of genomes, transcriptomes and interactomes to become inexpensive, routine and widespread. Variant discovery by re-sequencing targeted regions of interest or whole genomes, de novo assemblies of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes. Cataloguing the transcriptomes of cells, genome-wide profiling of epigenetic marks and chromatin structure is using other seq-based methods and species classification and gene discovery by metagenomics studies. Highlights • NGS provids unprecedented opportunities for high-throughput functional genomic research • NGS technologies have been applied in a variety of contexts, viz. whole genome sequencing, targeted resequencing, discovery of transcription factor binding sites, and noncoding RNA expression profiling.

A wide range of variation in sex forms ranging from primitive hermaphrodite to gynoecious advanced sex form is observed in cucurbitaceous vegetable crops. Sex expression in cucurbitaceae family is regulated by environmental, genetic and hormonal factors. In general, female sex expression is promoted by low temperature and short photoperiod, which may influence the level of endogeneous hormones (ethylene, auxin and GA) which in turn influence the sex expression. Sex inheritance plays an important role in breeding programme. The reduction in sex ratio, stabilizing the gynoecious character and development of stable gynoecious inbred parents is the main objective of cucurbit breeding programs. Identification of sex expression in the initial stage of the crop with the help of biotechnological tools like marker assisted selection (MAS) may be employed. The molecular breeding will also be helpful for studying the mechanism affecting sex expression and to identify the genes governing the sex character in cucurbits.
