The analysis is based on a questionnaire (View of Context—VOC) applied to a sample built through a two-step procedure of post-hoc random selection from a broader dataset based on an online survey. According to the methodological framework outlined in the previous chapter, responses to the questionnaire were subjected to multidimensional analysis—a combination of Multiple Correspondence Analysis and Cluster Analysis. We identified three fundamental dimensions of meanings, interpreted as lines of semiotic forces comprising the semiotic field of European societies: Affective connotation of the world—foe versus friend; Direction of desire—passivity versus engagement; Form of demand—demand for systemic resources versus demand for community bond. Moreover, 5 symbolic universes were mapped. Each symbolic universe corresponds to a basic, embodied, affect-laden, generalized worldview: People in this study see the world as either (a) an ordered universe; (b) a matter of interpersonal bond; (c) a caring society; (d) consisting of a niche of belongingness; (e) a hostile place (others’ world).

When His Holiness Pope Kirollos VI commissioned me to minister to the worship and pastoral needs of the Copts in the USA and Canada, I discussed this most serious venture with H.G. From that standpoint, music may be seen as one of the essential keys for interpreting a biography. The theoretical argument, described from a cultural and mediational perspective, is exemplified in the relationship established between musician and instrument. The singular value of each interpreter's personal and non-transferable encounter with musical mediators is addressed, and the possible interweave between musicians' technical and actual life horizons explored. The significance proposed refers to the specific ways in which music may translate world experience and model affect. The objective is to establish the relevance or possibility of expanding or nuancing the view of music as the outer representation of inner emotions through the conceit vitality affects, a term that stresses the dynamic and temporal dimensions of the emotive meaning of music.

The hydrodynamic characteristics of the copepod's feeding current have been extensively studied; however, there is little knowledge on if the copepod seta is capable of sensing the hydrodynamic disturbance of prey, or otherwise a direct contact of the setae and prey is required. Here we present a mechanical model to examine the deformation mechanics of the copepod setae when subjected to the flow disturbance of an inert particle entrained in the copepod's feeding current. We first determine the hydrodynamic characteristics of a copepod and beating stroke of its cephalic appendages through video analysis, and utilize the immersed boundary method to solve for the flow fields around the seta with and without the presence of the entrained prey. We then proceed to evaluate the setal deformation induced by such flows, and demonstrate that the flow disturbance induced by the entrained prey leads to a different setal deformation pattern, which may be sensed by the copepod.

We employ resistive force theory to compute the hydrodynamic force on the flagellar bundle, and the effects of DEP force and rotational diffusion are examined using the Fokker-Planck equation. The DEP force greatly contributes to the reorientation of the bacterium such that the bacterium's primary axis is aligned with the direction of the force. Interestingly, when the DEP strength varies perpendicularly to the direction of the force, the bacterium's primary axis is no longer aligned with the DEP force, which results in a translation of the bacterium perpendicular to its primary axis. Finally, we show the feasibility to utilize this phenomenon to achieve bacterial focusing.

Odum (1884-1954) and the examination of the psychological aspects that marked his reflection on African American music. This analysis reveals many of the aspects that were generically shared by the psychological agenda of the period when analyzing aesthetic experience and activity. Outstanding among these are the relationship of the musical phenomenon with very basic or primary affective-emotional dimensions, the conception of the musical phenomenon as an indicator of the cognitive-affective development of human groups, its expression in the form of cultural and complex intersubjective products, or its possible participation in the technoscientific design of social reform and progress. The simultaneous treatment of all of these aspects in Odum's work brings to light the interdisciplinary framework in which early psychology moved, while revealing the theoretical and ideological contradictions and controversies that enveloped the discipline, above all, at the point where it attempted to place itself at the service of the constitution of self-governed individuals. All in all, Odum's work also reflects the crucial role that early psychology attributed to art as a privileged medium to give meaning to experience and the human being's vital purposes. Environmental impacts of wasted food are substantial as it comprises the single largest category of organic matter in municipal landfills. Therefore, redirection of food waste from landfills is necessary to improve global food security and environmental sustainability issues. Livestock, with their capacity to “up-cycle” relatively low-quality feedstuffs into high quality protein, are an essential element of this solution. However, challenges regarding utilization of food waste for livestock production include regulatory restrictions, safety concerns and logistics associated with collection, transport and handling. Moreover, identifying industries with significant loss and waste resources along the supply chain, quantifying availability, and effective communication and coordination are necessary steps for large-scale diversion of food loss and waste to livestock feed. In Canada, Loop Resources is a o...

Interstitial pressure and flow within tumor microenvironment have been identified to influence biological and biochemical aspects of metastasis. However, little is known on the biophysical effect. This study focuses on the effect of interstitial pressure and flow on the detachment of tumor cells from primary tumor. Interstitial flow through a tumor generates tensile force in the direction of flow which might contribute to detachment of tumor cells from primary tumor. Here, flow is introduced into a microfluidic device to measure pressure difference across MCF-7 aggregates with different adhesions. Aggregates with different adhesions mimic in-vivo heterogenous tumor. Initially, fluid seeps through the porous aggregate. As pressure builds up at the afferent end, pressure-driven flow through the aggregate increases. At critical pressure difference, fracture occurs and hydraulic permeability increases. Cell masses dislodge from aggregate. Fractures occur at different critical pressure for aggregates with different adhesions. This mimic the detachment of tumor cells from primary tumor. These findings will provide better understanding about the biophysical effects of interstitial pressure and flow.

Analyses comprise seven countries are in Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, United Kingdom. The aim of these analysis is to understand if and to what extent socio-demographic and psycho-social factors that could play a role in moderating the impact of policies are associated with specific symbolic universes. Main findings: (a) the distribution of the different cultural segments differs quite a lot across countries, though the Niche of belongingness cultural segment appear as the most or one of the most frequent in all countries under analysis; (b) as to the socio-demographic profiles of the cultural segments, niche of belongingness and others’ world—i.e. the cultural segments characterized for the most negative worldviews—are associated with worse living conditions—low level of education, high unemployment or low quality of employment; negative self-evaluation of own health; moreover, they present a low level of (self-evaluated) positive personality traits, a low sense of interpersonal and community linkages, negative attitude towards foreigners. Conversely, ordered universe and interpersonal bond have a rather similar profile, characterized by young, highly educated people having a high quality occupational status and satisfaction with their health; moreover, these two cultural segments present positive personality characteristics as well as high level in the psycho-social capacity to valorise and make interpersonal and community life meaningful.
