Measurements at low temperatures ͑down to 120 K͒ were performed to enhance spectral features and to determine the temperature dependence of interband critical points. Our data are in qualitative agreement with recent reflectance experiments but show larger amplitudes and additional structures in the vicinity of the fundamental absorption edge. The possible origin of these structures is discussed on the basis of calculations of the electronic energy bands.

Alpha-IFN enhanced in vitro production of PWM induced IgG and IgM, and significantly enhanced PWM induced IgM rheumatoid factor (IgM-RF) production by lymphocytes both from normal subjects and RA patients. Enhancement was recorded whether cells were preincubated with α-IFN for 16 hours or with α-IFN present throughout the culture period. Alpha-IFN did not enhance IgM-RF production in the absence of PWM or T cells. Enhancement of IgM-RF production was not seen in Epstein-Barr virus stimulated cultures.

With respect to catalysis, high-pressure methanol synthesis was performed as a test reaction. A linear area-activity relationship for the highly crystalline materials was obtained, but at high BET surface areas a strong deviation from linearity was found. The observed phenomena provide evidence for a structuresensitivity, suggesting that a specific active site is favored for methanol formation. Based on earlier work with polycrystalline ZnO powder and with respect to the current theoretical and experimental work with ZnO single crystals, the polar ZnO faces are assumed to be highly relevant for the catalytic activity under methanol synthesis conditions.

The γ-phase crystallizes in the space group P3121 with Z = 12 at 90 K. The same structural principle prevails in all three phases, interconnected distorted RbI6 octahedra forming a three-dimensional framework, which undergoes only displacive structural changes during the α→β and β→γ phase transitions. In the γ-phase, pockets containing partially occupied silver sites exist, and it is suggested that the localized displacive motion detected by conductivity spectroscopy is performed by the silver ions located within these pockets. -(FUNKE*, K.; BANHATTI, R.
