A total of 40 dogs were enrolled in the study, they were randomly divided in control (CTR) and treatment (TRT) groups. The TRT group received the dietary supplement for 60 days. The CTR group received a placebo for the same number of days. All the subjects had veterinary evaluations during the trial and owners were requested to fill in questionnaires on chronic pain using the Helsinki Chronic Pain Index. The product was easy to administer and no side effects were reported. Combining results from veterinarian and owner evaluations, the tested product proved to be significantly beneficial in alleviating pain and in reducing the clinical signs in dogs with OA.

OA is a common debilitating condition affecting humans and animals. Tablets containing a preparation of natural ingredients (Cannabidiol (CBD)-rich fraction, Boswellia serrata Roxb. in a Phytosome® delivery form and Cucumis melo L. extract) were administered for 30 days. Veterinary evaluations were performed and owners filled questionnaires on chronic pain (Helsinki chronic pain index- HCPI) three times during the study. The product was well tolerated and owners reported a good palatability and ease of administration. In terms of effectiveness, results of a Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) on HCPI highlighted a significant reduction of pain scores at the end of the study. Based on our observations, our new dietary supplement has beneficial effects in dogs with OA after the treatment.

Objective: This study is aimed to examine the effect of topical lotion containing lactoferricin, glycerophosphoinositol lysine and verbascoside on canine atopic dermatitis. The topical lotion must be easy to use in ears of dogs under treatment. Methods: 21 dogs with external otitis due to atopic dermatitis were treated for 14 days and monitored from day 0 to day 14 to ascertain the effect of the treatment with different parameters such as CADESI score, lichenification, excoriation, alopecia, pruritus and cytological analysis. Results: The lotion here prepared showed the correct density and viscosity to be used in the dogs’ ears. Thanks to the easy application, all the 21 dogs were treated for the entire period without any complain. Moreover, in all treated dogs a c...

Due to increase of antibiotic resistance, new strategies are needed. Antiseptics are used but they may induce contact dermatitis. Natural antimicrobial peptides may represent future effective drugs. Objectives: The objectives were to test the effi cacy of an 11% lactoferricin otological solution (LCF) in bacterial and yeasts otic overgrowth and compare LCF with a commercial one containing chlorhexidine (CLX) 0.05%. Materials and methods: Forty-one dogs diagnosed with bacterial or yeasts otitis overgrowths were included according to general good practice. They were randomly assigned to lactoferricin or chlorhexidine group for treatment. Otological solution were applied twice a day for a week and then daily for another week. Clinical and cytological score was assessed at day 1 and day 14. At the end of the study, the owners had to express an opinion on the overall effi cacy of the products. Statistical analyses were performed using Wilkoxon's test and T test for paired samples. Results in lesional and cytological score were signifi cative with a p<0.05. Results: Forty dogs completed the study. All cases, receiving lactoferricin or chlorhexidine, were successfully treated with clinical signs remission and regression of infection (p<0.05). The owners' judgment was good in 87%, mild in 13% for LCF group. For CLX they scored good in 41%, mild in 24% and unuseful in 35% of cases. Conclusions: Lactoferricin, an antimicrobial natural peptide, showed the same effi cacy of chlorhexidine in the treatment of otitis characterized by bacterial or/and yeast overgrowth.

Dietary supplementation with hepatoprotective and antioxidant products could represent a beneficial strategy to prevent and treat these disorders. We evaluated the tolerability and efficacy of long-term treatment with a multi-component, dietary supplement containing functional natural ingredients with recognized hepatoprotective properties in cats suffering from liver diseases Methods: 20 European domestic cats of either gender, 10 with hepatic lipidosis and 10 with cholangitis received for 180 consecutive days a multi-component formulation based on the silibinin-phosphatidylcholine complex as paste or tablet. Clinical assessment and blood and urine parameters were evaluated at T0 (inclusion time) and after 7, 28, 60, 90 and 180 days from the initiation of the study. Results: The oral supplementation with the silibinin-phosphatidylcholine complex significantly reduced the ac...

A proper renal diet is considered the current standard of care to enhance patients’ long-term survival and quality of life. However, when diet alone is not sufficient, it is necessary to supplement it with specific substances: these are phosphate binders and alkalinizing agents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a feed supplement containing calcium carbonate, calcium lactate gluconate, chitosan and sodium bicarbonate in controlling hyperphosphatemia and metabolic acidosis in cats with severe CKD (IRIS, International Renal Interest Society, stage 3 and 4).Materials, Methods & Results: 10 cats (median BW 4.00 (3.20; 5.70) Kg, BCS 3/5 (2.25; 3.75), 11 (8.25;12.00) years) fed with a balanced renal diet were included in the study. To be enrolled in the study cats had to be affected by CKD in stages 3 or 4 and show hyperphosphatemia. Treatment consisted in...

Chitosan and alkalinizing agents can decrease morbidity and mortality in humans with chronic kidn... more Chitosan and alkalinizing agents can decrease morbidity and mortality in humans with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Whether this holds true in dog is not known. Objective of the study was to determine whether a commercial dietary supplement containing chitosan, phosphate binders, and alkalinizing agents (Renal), compared to placebo, reduces mortality rate due to uremic crises in dogs with spontaneous CKD, fed a renal diet (RD). A masked RCCT was performed including 31 azotemic dogs with spontaneous CKD. Dogs enrolled in the study were randomly allocated to receive RD plus placebo (group A; 15 dogs) or RD plus Renal (group B; 16 dogs). During a first 4-week period, all dogs were fed an RD and then randomized and clinically evaluated up to 44 weeks. The effects of dietary supplements on mortality rate due to uremic crises were assessed. At 44 weeks, compared to group A, dogs in group B had approximately 50% lower mortality rate due to uremic crises (P = 0.015). Dietary supplementation ...
