The Journal of Current Construction Issues. Sustainable Development in Construction was written o... more The Journal of Current Construction Issues. Sustainable Development in Construction was written on the basis of an increased interest in the project management in a construction industry and a recently intensified discourse about a sustainable development. A term project relates to an original undertaking which has a specific aim, clear start/finish dates and all resources are allocated to particular tasks. Project management requires a coordination of activities of all stakeholders involved in the undertaking. However, applying stakeholder inclusiveness in a project: • increases the likelihood of more engaged and satisfied stakeholders, • increases the danger of losing focus on those stakeholders who possess the most critical resources for the project’s survival and progress, • increases the danger of inducing stakeholder disappointment due to expectation escalation and impossibility of embracing conflicting requirements and wishes. The construction industry is involved in creating physical assets which are the basis of many aspects of development. On the other hand, the industry, together with the building materials industries which supply it, is one of the largest exploiters of natural resources, both mineral and biological. Its activities cause irreversible transformations of the natural environment. Moreover, it adds to the accumulation of pollutants in the atmosphere. Construction has been considered as a source of the environmental problems ranging from excessive consumption of global resources both in terms of construction and building operation to the pollution of the surrounding environment. Thus, a research on green building design and using building materials to minimize environmental impact is already very popular. However, relying on the design of a project to achieve the goal of sustainable development, or to minimize impacts through appropriate management on site, is not sufficient to handle the current problem. The aim for sustainability assessment goes even further than at the design stage of a project to consider its importance at an early stage, before any detailed design or even before a commitment is made to go ahead with a development. The main debate on how to reconcile the needs of economic growth with ecological maintenance has centered on the popular concept of sustainable development. Sustainability has been also included in a series of annual conferences organized by the UTP University of Science and Technology in Bydgoszcz. The second international scientific conference Civil Engineering: Present Problems, Innovative Solutions (CEPPIS) in 2016 was set out to pay attention to recent trends especially sustainable development in the construction industry. The book was written in order to present some theoretical and practical considerations, experience and results of conducted investigations in the area of project management with a special attention to a phenomenon of sustainability. A complexity of the project management against a sustainable development was described in the book. This attitude results from a need for preserving limited resources while maintaining an economic activity. It is also essential because of a necessity of protecting natural elements for the next generations. The book is addressed to the scientists connected with project management discipline as well as to those who are responsible for creating an integrity of the project with the environment. A presented matter can become a source of inspiration for the academics involved in the sustainable development in construction industry and for those who are looking for some new solutions and more eco-friendly procedures and processes of the projects. Professional project managers hired by the modern companies should be interested in the issue. Some implementations can be useful for them in order to solve their contemporary problems in real circumstances. A text of the book was divided into two parts: 1. Sustainability in business 2. Sustainability and Nature Particular chapters present studies results of the scientific research on business, construction engineering, project management and sustainability from all over the world.

With the current regulation, it has once again emerged that site-specific based analysis and evaluations are necessary. While the building performance scores in the previous regulation were the same for all provinces since they were located in the same earthquake zone, different values were obtained for the provinces with the current regulation. As the PGA value increased, the design spectral acceleration coefficient increased and the building's performance score was lower. This increases the risk in these regions.

There are many experimental studies on the scour problem, and some empirical relationships were presented in the literature. The biggest challenges in the scour analyses are the requirement of a lot of time and complex hydrodynamics of the liquidsolid interaction. In this study the scour at downstream of submerged sluice flow after an apron was investigated by using 2D computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Some experimental data and relationships in the literature were used to calibrate the numerical analyses. It is observed that the variation of maximum scour versus time is exponential and dimensionless scour profiles fit to third degree curve. The relative percent error is approximately 5-10% between experimental and numerical results.

Along with sustainable development many innovative solutions came out. One of them is sustainable green cleaning products and techniques. Today, emissions from conventional cleaning products may cause severe health and environmental issues. Especially sick building syndromes such as eye, skin and respiratory irritations are main health effects of them. They may also contribute to global warming, ozone layer depletion, aquatic toxicity, and air pollution. It has already been proven that misuse, storage, disposal and production stages of cleaning products can cause stream pollution. As an emerging and innovative sustainable technique “green cleaning” refers to environmental improvements such as pollution and greenhouse gas emission reduction, conservation of resources, preservation of wildlife, and reduction of plastic and waste that arise from used conventional techni...

While designing engineering structures, structure foundation should operate in accordance with the ground as much as possible and should fulfill the design criteria in geotechnical and structural means. Structure-ground interaction should be a non-negligible element of structure design. The local geological soil conditions change the characteristics of surface seismic response. The structural damages after earthquakes have been influenced significantly by local soil conditions. In this study the effects of local soil conditions on earthquake damages have been evaluated. The aim of study was also to evaluate the interaction between soil conditions and structures. In a frame of a common model where ground environment, foundation type and superstructure are taken into consideration together, mutual interaction of ground and structure during earthquake should be taken...

Research paper thumbnail of Time-dependent model for earthquake occurrence and effects of design spectra on structural performance: a case study from the North Anatolian Fault Zone, Turkey

TURKISH JOURNAL OF EARTH SCIENCES, 2021

We have investigated the time-dependent seismicity model of the earthquake occurrence on a region... more We have investigated the time-dependent seismicity model of the earthquake occurrence on a regional basis through the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ). To that end, the studied region has been subdivided into 7 seismogenic zones considering the seismotectonic criteria, and then regional time and magnitude predictable (RTIMAP) model has been performed. Intervened times and magnitudes of main shocks produced in each zone have predictive properties defined by the RTIMAP. The probabilities of the next main shocks in 5 decades and the magnitudes of the next events have been estimated using the formation time and magnitude of the past events in the zones. In the second step of the study, we have considered 17 settlements located on the NAFZ to perform point-based site-specific seismic hazard analyses and to determine the design spectra and earthquake parameters using updated Turkish Earthquake Hazard Map. Eigen value and static adaptive pushover analyses have been applied for the sample reinforced concrete building using the design spectra obtained from each settlement. This sample building has been modelled with the same structural characteristics (i.e. material strength, column and beams, applied loads, etc.) for all of the settlements. We have determined that the earthquake building parameters differ from each other which indicates the significance of site-specific seismicity characteristics on the building performance.

A destructive earthquake is also expected in the region. To determine the effect of the specific design spectrum, eleven provinces located in the region were chosen according to the Turkey Earthquake Building Code updated in 2019. Additionally, the differences between the previous and updated regulations of the country were investigated. Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) and Peak Ground Velocity (PGV) were obtained for each province by using earthquake ground motion levels with 2%, 10%, 50%, and 68% probability of exceedance in 50-year periods. The PGA values in the region range from 0.16 to 0.7 g for earthquakes with a return period of 475 years. For each province, a sample of a reinforced-concrete building having two different numbers of stories with the same ground and structural characteristics was chosen. Static adaptive pushover analyses were performed for the sample reinforced-concrete b...

Since that day, the physical hydraulic models have helped development of hydraulic structures empirically. Although the advanced analytical and numerical methods have been developed together with fluid mechanics theory, the use of these methods has not been possible in practice until recent years due to computation difficulties. However, with the developing in computer technology and numerical solutions methods, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques have been used widely in the hydraulics such as other relevant scopes, especially since the beginning of the 21th century. In this study, the using of CFD in the hydraulic structures was explained with some examples and the advantage and disadvantage of this method were discussed. However, cavitational pressures in the siphon-shaft limit the operating head of these spillways. An enlargement at the shaft mouth can reduce the vacuum pressures and velocities within the siphonic flows, thereby removing the risk of cavitation occurring. In this study, four different enlarging shaft profiles with various coning angles of 0°, 10°, 15°, and 20° were applied to a siphon-shaft spillway model to eliminate cavitation pressures in the shaft. These models are analyzed in three dimensions by computational fluid dynamics based on the RANS turbulence model coupled with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method to simulate fluid motion. The numerical uncertainties of the simulation were calibrated with some experimental results and techniques in the literature. The results showed that the enlargement in the shaft mouth with a conical profile signif...

Keywords : CFD, Fluid Dynamics, Hydraulic structures, Turbulence modeling
