Through a secondary data analysis of semi-structured interviews, we examined decision-making processes in five African American dementia dyads related to how they navigated decisions for the person living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) across five unique contexts (e.g., mother with multiple daughters, mother with son and daughter where the son was the “primary” caregiver). Analysis revealed that within dyads, persons living with ADRD were involved in the decision-making processes, but the level of the involvement in decision making by the caregiving networks varied across dyads. Understanding the context in which decisions are made (i.e., within the dyad, across multiple family members in a caregiving network) has important implications in clinical practice and research. Through semi-structured interviews, five African American dementia dyads shared their decision-making processes. We used a multimethod approach to the analysis of data, including qualitative and quantitative content analysis and the creation of I Poems. This novel use of I Poems provided a uniquely personal account of the lived experiences of the African American persons living with dementia, while other analyses revealed that within dyads, daily care decision making was led by African American persons living with dementia, whereas formal care decision making varied between dyads. There was intra-dyad congruence regarding who the final decision maker was in daily and formal care. Clinicians and researchers may be able to tailor interventions based on the dyad’s involvement in these decision-making processes.

The use of mixed or multiple methods is a growing trend that offers another option for researchers in addressing the complex health problems faced in nursing today.

Phenomenological, ground theory, ethnography, narrative inquiry, and other related qualitative-related research methodologies are described. In addition, the importance of qualitative research as groundwork for quantitative studies is discussed. This link between qualitative and quantitative research is fundamental to promote evidence-based nursing practice.

Cycle characteristics and outcomes were compared using the Fisher's exact test and the Wilcoxon sum rank test. Multivariate analyses were performed to assess the potential interference of maternal age, infertility cause, number of embryos transferred and day of embryo transfer on the relationship between CG and live birth. Main results and the role of chance: Patients providing CG oocytes (n ¼ 211) presented higher maternal age (37.6 § 4.5 vs. 36.5 § 4.3; p¼ p < 0.001), higher basal FSH (8.5 § 3.8 vs. 7.9 § 4.1 IU/L; p ¼ 0.03), lower AMH (2.2 § 2.2 vs. 3.2 § 3.5 ng/mL; p < 0.001), higher incidence of ovarian infertility (17.5% vs. 4.9%; p < 0.001) and higher FSH total dose (2255.3 § 866.4 vs. 1825.6 § 752.3 IU; p < 0.0001), compared to controls (n ¼ 866). Implantation, abortion and live birth rates did not differ between cycles providing (CG) or not (Control) CG oocytes (22.7% vs. 24.9%, 17.1% vs. 27.7%, 25.8% vs. 22.9%, respectively). Nevertheless, implantation and live birth rates were lower in cycles in which CG-derived embryos were transferred (CGT; n ¼ 87) compared to cycles in which CG oocytes were obtained but only NO-derived embryos were transferred (NOT; n ¼ 57), or to cycles in which CG oocytes were not obtained (Control-T; n ¼ 595). Implantation rates were 11.4%, 30.9% and 24.9%, while live birth rates were 10.5%, 30.2% and 22.9% for CGT, NOT and Control-T, respectively (p < 0.001 for implantation rates in CGT vs. NOT and CGT vs. Control-T; p < 0.04 for live birth rates in CGT vs. NOT and CGT vs. Control-T). No significant differences were observed between NOT and Control-T. Limitations, reasons for caution: Our study is subjected to the limitations of a retrospective analysis and thus the data may be affected by other variables that were not controlled for. Moreover, the intrinsic difficulty in obtaining a higher number of cycles in which only CG-derived embryos are transferred, limits the power of the analysis. Wider implications of the findings: Our findings shed light on a still unsolved question in ICSI practice. The present data indicate that CG is associated with markedly reduced oocyte developmental competence, while the presence of CG oocytes in a cycle does not affect the quality of the companion normal oocytes.

Their quality of life (QOL) has been shown to be significantly impacted by both the disease and its treatment, adding to the high symptom burden that these patients experience. The primary aims of this paper are as follows: (1) to identify how QOL is being defined in HCC literature and (2) to identify how QOL is being measured in the HCC literature using Ferrell’s model of QOL. A systematic review was completed of relevant studies published after 2014, using PubMed, CINHAL, and PsycInfo. Relevant studies were reviewed by 2 reviewers using PRISMA guidelines. From a total of 1312 papers obtained in the initial database search, 30 met inclusion criteria and are included in this review. From the included articles, 10% included a definition of QOL and 3% addressed the spiritual domain of QOL. Majority of study participants were in the early stage of HCC, though the majority of adults with HCC are diagnosed in the advanced stage. Only 3% of included studies included greater than 22% population of advanced stage of HCC. The results of this systematic review demonstrate the need for future research into QOL in the advanced stage of QOL. It also identified gap in the literature concerning the definition of QOL in HCC and the spiritual domain of QOL in HCC.

The first article in the series presents the most frequently used quantitative research designs. Strategies for nonexperimental and experimental research designs used to generate and refine nursing knowledge are described. In addition, the importance of quantitative designs and the role they play in developing evidence-based practice are discussed. Nursing care needs to be determined by the results of sound research rather than by clinical preferences or tradition.

Evaluation and program alignment regarding use of the framework were achieved through qualitative interviews with deans of the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy, and focused on how they evaluated student progression towards the university-wide teamwork competency. Interview data were analyzed using classical content analysis. Results: Despite efforts to carefully design the framework, interviews revealed that significant variation exists regarding when and how both IPE and team-based care are taught and evaluated across schools. Common barriers to interprofessional education included variations in teamwork practices across disciplines, scheduling challenges, and lack of resources...
