To evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of primary chemotherapy with the schedule E400P in the treatment of patients with early stage II (Ha and lib) and advanced seminoma of good prognosis according to the international classification (IGCCCG) Patients and methods Sixty-four patients were included E400P consisted of cisplatin 25 mg/m 2 /day and etoposide 100 mg/m 2 /day for four days, every three weeks Royal Marsden stages were I lab' 53% and IIc-IV. 47% Twenty-three percent had high BHCG levels, twenty-seven percent had LDH > 2 x N Sixty-two patients were of good prognosis according to the Medical Research Council classification Results Response rate was 98% (69% complete remission, 29% residual disease). Patients and Methods Eligibility criteria included biopsy-proven, previously untreated, stage III or IV locally advanced HNC. Patients received either CF (cisplatin 100 mg/m2 on day 1 plus FU 1,000 mg/m2 continuous infusion on days 1 through 5) or PCF (paclitaxel 175 mg/m2 on day 1, cisplatin 100 mg/m2 on day 2, and FU 500 mg/m2 continuous infusion on days 2 through 6); both regimens were administered for three cycles every 21 days. Purpose To assess the efficacy of a risk-adapted treatment policy for patients with stage I semin... more Purpose To assess the efficacy of a risk-adapted treatment policy for patients with stage I seminoma by using universally accepted risk criteria. Patients and Methods Between 1999 and 2003, 314 patients with clinical stage I seminoma after orchiectomy were prospectively included. One hundred patients (31.8%) presented no risk factors and were managed with surveillance. In contrast, 131 patients (41.7%) had tumors larger than 4 cm, 33 patients (10.5%) had rete testis involvement, and 50 patients (15.9%) had both risk factors. All the latter received two courses of adjuvant carboplatin. Results Chemotherapy was well tolerated, as only 17 patients (7.9%) presented grade 3 to 4 toxicity. Background: After decades of irradiation as standard therapy for clinical stage I testicular semi... more Background: After decades of irradiation as standard therapy for clinical stage I testicular seminoma, alternative treatment approaches have emerged including postorchiectomy surveillance and adjuvant chemotherapy. This study was performed to assess a dual policy of surveillance and selective single-agent carboplatin (for high-risk cases) in a multicenter setting. Patients and methods: From 1994 to 1999, 203 patients with stage I seminoma were included. Sixty (29.6%) were considered poor-risk cases (i.e. with vascular invasion and/or pathological tumor stage pT2 or greater) and received two courses of adjuvant carboplatin, whereas 143 (70.4%) without risk criteria underwent close surveillance. Results: Median follow-up was 52 months (range 14-92). Relapses were observed in two (3.3%) patients treated with carboplatin and in 23 patients (16.1%) on surveillance, with a median time to recurrence of 11 months (range 3.9-39.6). All relapsing patients were rendered disease-free, mainly with cisplatin-based chemotherapy. Four patients died from tumor-unrelated causes. Actuarial 5-year overall survival was 96.7% and cause-specific survival was 100%. Five-year disease-free survival was 83.5% for patients on surveillance, and 96.6% for those receiving carboplatin. Conclusions: This dual treatment policy is feasible in a multicenter setting and preserves 70% of patients from adjuvant chemotherapy. Single-agent carboplatin is effective in reducing the relapse rate in patients with high-risk stage I seminoma. A better definition of local risk features would probably improve patient selection, thus minimizing the incidence of recurrences on surveillance.

This paper describes XDS, a tool designed with agents, which integrates data from multiple sources: relational databases, native XML databases and XML documents, obtaining the results in XML format. Besides its usefulness is demonstrated with a case study applied to the environment of libraries, consisting of bibliographic consults, where the result obtained are formatted in MODS.

Los programas de tratamiento antibiótico domiciliario endovenoso (TADE) permiten iniciar o comple... more Los programas de tratamiento antibiótico domiciliario endovenoso (TADE) permiten iniciar o completar el tratamiento antimicrobiano por vía endovenosa de prácticamente cualquier tipo de infección en el domicilio, siempre y cuando se realice una selección del paciente acorde al tipo de programa de TADE que se dispone. Aunque hay aspectos del manejo clínico de las infecciones en el domicilio que son superponibles en la mayoría de los casos a la realizada en la hospitalización convencional (selección de la antibioterapia, duración del tratamiento, etc.), existen numerosos aspectos que son específicos de esta modalidad asistencial. Resulta imprescindible conocerlos para que el TADE siga siendo igual de eficaz y seguro que la hospitalización convencional. This document considers the recycling and processing of waste vegetable oil used in homes, in ord... more This document considers the recycling and processing of waste vegetable oil used in homes, in order to analyze the feasibility of manufacturing biodiesel at an industrial level. The study focused on individual households and local food vendors (especially fried chicken). Simple random sampling was used to select 381 households and a census was applied to local food vendors with 29 selected. This selection was surveyed with the primary objective estimating the amount of domestic oil discarded in the Milagro city. Based on the value of the estimator it is possible to identify the size of the factory, the annual production and calculate the cost of producing each gallon of biodiesel. From the results obtained it is concluded that the project is viable as long as the subsidy given by the Government to diesel is not considered.

The processes occurring consecutively during anodic oxidation of antimony in buffered phosphate s... more The processes occurring consecutively during anodic oxidation of antimony in buffered phosphate solutions are followed by in situ ellipsometry. In the first stages of anodization, soluble species formation followed by formation of a highly hydrated film takes place. At higher potentials, the growth of a single layer of Sb 2 O 3 anodic film occurs. Oxygen evolution occurring simultaneously with oxide growth is also detected. Surface chemical analysis by XPS allowed obtaining the chemical state and composition of the anodic antimony oxide films. The procedure followed in order to carry out the spectra deconvolution due to overlapping of O1s and Sb3d photoemission lines is discussed. The binding energy values obtained for O1s and Sb3d signals as well as the O/Sb atomic ratio indicates that the anodic film formed at low or high potentials is composed by Sb(III) species only. Hydration as well as phosphate ions incorporation into the film is also demonstrated.

Au vapor was deposited on the surface of ionic liquids such as 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium dicya... more Au vapor was deposited on the surface of ionic liquids such as 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium dicyanamide (Emim-DCA) and 1buthyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluorosulpheniy)imide (Bmim-TFSI). Au clusters were formed in the ionic liquid by adjusting the deposition rate. Transmission electron microscope measurements showed that the large Au clusters formed in Emim-DCA had a face-centered cubic crystal structure, while the small Au clusters had a decahedral structure. Furthermore, small-angle Xray scattering measurements showed that the average diameter of Au clusters was in the range of 1 to 6 nm, and the cluster size decreased with increasing deposition rate. The average diameter of Au clusters formed in Bmim-TFSI was in the range of 0.5 to 4.5 nm, which is smaller than that of Au clusters in Emim-DCA, and most of the crystal structures were decahedrons. The processes occurring consecutively during anodic oxidation of antimony in buffered phosphate s... more The processes occurring consecutively during anodic oxidation of antimony in buffered phosphate solutions are followed by in situ ellipsometry. In the first stages of anodization, soluble species formation followed by formation of a highly hydrated film takes place. At higher potentials, the growth of a single layer of Sb 2 O 3 anodic film occurs. Oxygen evolution occurring simultaneously with oxide growth is also detected. Surface chemical analysis by XPS allowed obtaining the chemical state and composition of the anodic antimony oxide films. The procedure followed in order to carry out the spectra deconvolution due to overlapping of O1s and Sb3d photoemission lines is discussed. The binding energy values obtained for O1s and Sb3d signals as well as the O/Sb atomic ratio indicates that the anodic film formed at low or high potentials is composed by Sb(III) species only. Hydration as well as phosphate ions incorporation into the film is also demonstrated.

Au vapor was deposited on the surface of ionic liquids such as 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium dicya... more Au vapor was deposited on the surface of ionic liquids such as 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium dicyanamide (Emim-DCA) and 1buthyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluorosulpheniy)imide (Bmim-TFSI). Au clusters were formed in the ionic liquid by adjusting the deposition rate. Transmission electron microscope measurements showed that the large Au clusters formed in Emim-DCA had a face-centered cubic crystal structure, while the small Au clusters had a decahedral structure. Furthermore, small-angle Xray scattering measurements showed that the average diameter of Au clusters was in the range of 1 to 6 nm, and the cluster size decreased with increasing deposition rate. The average diameter of Au clusters formed in Bmim-TFSI was in the range of 0.5 to 4.5 nm, which is smaller than that of Au clusters in Emim-DCA, and most of the crystal structures were decahedrons.
