If philosophy must be considered as Blanchot s unavowable, mostly nameless and face-less companion; Blanchot s restrained presence in turn was not less deci-sive as a dialogue partner for French post-Heideggerian philosophy (Levinas, Foucault, Derrida, Nancy). In order to apprehend the intricate design left by the weaving shuttle going back and forth in this infinite interchange, I will focus on what could be the common and nonetheless dividing mem-brane between them: the question of the image.

Deleuze and Guattari's attempt to sidestep idealism and its historical working through of contradictions and differences brings them, I argue, close to the tradition of utopianism, which is characterized by subtraction, isolation, paradoxical reversibility, and the elision of the negative. In contrast, Hegel's critique of autonomy, one-sidedness, and unreflected oppositions allows for a problematization of these characteristics of utopianism without sacrificing an emphatic notion of freedom and justice. ❧ The Deleuzian concepts of deterritorialization, flight, and difference are contrasted with the Hegelian concepts of Aufhebung, opposition, and mediation. Hegel's emphasis on relation, struggle, and reconciliation through the concept and the labor of history is replaced by Deleuze with non-relational difference, detachment, and immanence. The proximity of such a thinking with the utopian imaginary is presented via a reading of classic utopian texts as well as theories of utopia put forth by Louis Marin, Fredric Jameson, Ernst Bloch, and others. Hegel's treatment of the French Revolution in the Phenomenology of Spirit reveals his thinking of the political as a laborious negotiation between the particular and the universal. I analyze Deleuze and Guattari's writings on capitalism in light of the utopian motif of affirming one side of a particular socio-historical trend accompanied by a repudiation of its other side. Where Hegel analyzes such dualities in terms of their mutual reciprocality, Deleuze and Guattari repeat the utopian gestures of affirmation and escape. The distance thereby created between the prosaic, actual world and an intensified, virtual one can be grasped as a space of invention; this utopian capacity is the strength of Deleuze and Guattari. It is Hegel however who provides the concepts for refl [...]

A sequence of increasingly complex modes of boundary relations—or relations between the insides and outsides of a thing—is presented and analyzed. The sequence supports distinctions between living and nonliving things, plants and animals, lower animals and higher ones, and nonhuman animals and humans. "Organic life" is defined and its characteristic features—the "organic modals"—are elucidated. The boundary relations of living things can be understood as "positionality"—that is, orientation to and within an environment. Human positionality is both centric (as in many animals) and excentric insofar as the relation between inside and outside is something to which the human being is "positioned." This excentric positionality enables human beings to stand outside of the boundaries of their own body, a possibility with significant implications for human knowledge, culture, religion, and technology. Through articulation of the essential features of organic life, its distinction from and relation within nonliving nature, and the distinctions among living things, including between the nonhuman and human, the work provides foundations for a philosophical anthropology.</p>

We then discuss particular words and word groupings, the adequate translation of which required special care. Finally, we consider an example of the kind of collaborative procedure employed and the difficulties faced along the way.
