There were 35 million people infected with HIV in 2013 and over 70% of whom lived in sub-Saharan Africa. Breast cancer is the leading form of cancer affecting South African women. The main aim of this study was to better understand the profile and features of breast cancer in HIV-positive and negative patients in the Limpopo province, South Africa. Methods: This is a retrospective cross sectional descriptive quantitative study designed to analyse the profile of all patients with breast cancers who attended at Mankweng Breast Oncology Clinic from July 2020 to December 2021. Results: Total of 205 patients. The HIV-positive group consisted of 43 patients and the HIV-negative group of 162 patients. Age range: 20-90 years, mean age: 51, mean age of HIV-positive group: 46.6(30-79) years and HIV-negative 52.4 (20-90) years. Castleman's disease is divided into unicentric Castleman disease, which involved a single enlarged lymph node or region of lymph nodes, and multicentric Castleman disease, which involved multiple lymph node stations. In this paper we highlight the presentation of Castleman's disease on a female patient to share our experience with literature review. Case Presentation: A 29 years old female patient was referred to our surgical outpatient clinic from the peripheral hospital with right & left painless neck cervical mass slowly growing which started 3 years ago along with a right breast lump and patient was RVD non-reactive. On physical examination she was severely wasted. She had 4cm by 3cm mass of the right supraclavicular region & another mass of 3cm x 1 cm mass on the left supraclavicular area. Her abdominal examination revealed hepatomegaly which is extended 8 cm below the subcostal margin. Histology report of cervical mass concluded Reactive lymph nodes with features of hyaline vascular Castleman disease and Breast mass revealed fibroadenoma. Immunohistochemistry of cervical node biopsy for HHV8 is negative. Blood result of inflammatory markers: C-reactive protein was 459 mg/L. Conclusions: Owing to the rarity of this condition, Castleman Disease Collaborative Network (CDCN) guideline is important for assessment & treatment plan.

When an individual is recognized for their good deed, they feel delighted. This inspires them to keep getting better and binds them to greater goals. First Annual award ceremony of the Mankweng Tertiary and Academic Hospital was held in March 2022. The hospital’s management recognized outstanding employees from all the different sections. After the ceremony, the hospital’s management displayed those award winners’ names on the wall of the main corridor of the hospital and this was done in order to enhance further motivation, engagement & encouragement. The main objective of the study to find out the employee’s perception on the displaying reward winner names in the wall of the Mankweng Hospital corridor and whether there is any enhancement of the employees' motivation. Distances to surgical departments in Limpopo, delays in transportation impose unintentionally conservative initial managements before patients arrive at theatres. Aim: To find out how many children (under of age 15 years) had histologically proven appendicitis, how many had a normal appendix & what was the outcome of treatment in respect of mortality and wound infections. Method: A retrospective study from January 2004 to December 2007 carried out in the Mankweng Hospital. Cases of laparotomies for appendicitis of all children were retrieved from the hospital archives. Full blood count was done in all patients. Results: The total number of children included in this study was 71, male: 46, female: 25. Histology: acute appendicitis reported in 65 cases, mucocele 1, schistosomiasis 1 and normal appendix in 4 cases. White Blood Cell count was raised in 58 patients (56 in patients with appendiciti...

In this case report, we seek to explore and share our local experience of primary malignant melanoma of the breast and give a literature review on the standard of care as well as to stimulate physician awareness. Our interest is on the appreciation of the current lack of set guidelines on how to work-up patients that present with this rare variant of malignant melanoma and to highlight its management. We present here a rare case of a 62 years old female with the primary malignant melanoma of the breast (PMMB).

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common histological diagnosis. Lymphomas in breasts grow faster in pregnant or postpartum women especially, in those who are infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Confirmation of diagnosis is usually delayed because of breasts’ extraordinary engorgement, hormonal changes during the pregnancy or lactation and most of the patients are diagnosed in advanced stages. Rapidly growing breast mass in HIV patients during the antenatal and postpartum period should undergo prompt investigations and early treatment if proven lymphoma.

This can lead to insertion of intercostal drain and result in serious iatrogenic injury. Differentiation between hypogenetic lung disease and haemothorax sometimes requires additional investigations like ultrasound scan or computed tomography.

Lockdowns are known to reduce the transmission of virus and enforced almost in the entire world based on countries recommendations. In South Africa, lockdown measures were imposed from 26th March 2020 and health care services became seriously affected particularly elective surgical operations. Objectives: Main aim of the study is to estimate the effect of lockdown on the general surgery services in Mankweng hospital. Method: This is a retrospective cross sectional observational descriptive study. Data for study include admission, operation & attendance to outpatient clinic collected during a lockdown period of 3 months(April-June 2020) and normal period of 3 months(April-June 2019) from Mankweng Hospital Information System. Result: During the lockdown period April-June 2020, total 291 patients were seen in Surgical Outpatient Depa...
