This article outlines the issues involved in nonvisual access to graphical user interfaces, reviews current research in this field, classifies methods and approaches, and discusses the extent to which researchers have resolved these issues.

This system requires implantation of a special electrode into the outer layers of the human neocortex. The recorded signals are transmitted to a nearby receiver and processed to drive a cursor on a computer monitor in front of the patient. Our present patient has learned to control the cursor for the production of synthetic speech and typing.

Often, drastic changes in the user interface are inevitable, as in migrating atext-based system to a workstation with Graphical User Interface capabilities. This experiencereport chronicles a study of user interface migration issues, examining and evaluating currenttools and techniques. It also describes a case study

The BCI technologies suitable for this purpose are the techniques that use external stimulators to evoke cortical potentials. However, current models for designing BCI Systems are not suitable for this purpose. A new functional model is proposed as a guide for designing BCI-based

Sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and organized by the Wadsworth Center of the New York State Department of Health, the meeting addressed current work and future plans in brain-computer interface (BCI) research. Ninety-two researchers representing 38 different research groups from the United States, Canada, Europe, and China participated. The BCIs discussed at the meeting use electroencephalographic activity recorded from the scalp or single-neuron activity recorded within cortex to control cursor movement, select letters or icons, or operate neuroprostheses. The central element in each BCI is a translation algorithm that converts electrophysiological input from the user into output that controls external devices. BCI operation depends on effective interaction between two adaptive controllers, the user who encode...

These methods have typically been used for nontraditional assistive technology applications. Non-traditional assistive technology is generally targeted for users with severe motor disabilities which may last long-term due to illness or injury or short-term due to situational disabilities. Control of a nontraditional assistive technology can vary widely across users depending upon many factors ranging from health to experience. Unfortunately, there is no systematic method for assessing usability of nontraditional assistive technologies to achieve the best control. The current methods to accommodate users through trial-and-error result in the loss of valuable time and resources as users sometimes have diminishing abilities or suffer from terminal illnesses. This work describes a methodology for objectively measuring an individual’s ability to control a specific n...
